TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We’re reading St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its eco-nomic success even today. In Paul’s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with in-habitants drawn from all over the world, in-cluding a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influ-ence of a very secular and self-indulgent soci-ety that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul’s heart; he wrote to them sometimes “with many tears” (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There’s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of mar-ble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Reflecting on God’s Word Sue loves to iron clothes. In the process, she says, she also irons out her life, all its wrinkles and creases. She says she can stand neither her clothes nor her life when they’re all rumpled. John runs every day. A lot of folks do. He hasn’t missed a day in five years. But it’s also where he and they pace out the rhythms of their lives. More than one frazzled mother has locked herself in the bathroom for twenty minutes of solitude and quasi-peace. Sometimes deserts look like bathrooms. Even teenagers know the need, so they crank up some tunes, stretch out on their beds, and listen beyond the music to the melodies played upon their lives. I suspect there is a lot going on in those spaces. That’s where kids get raised and loves get sorted and businesses are merged and decisions unraveled and re-raveled. But somewhere in the midst of it all we also make some deci-sions about who and what we want to become in this life—at any age. That’s where goodness has a chance to surface and values are affirmed and commitments are re-made for the umpteenth time and faith sprouts forth. And then it becomes prayer, out of the silence and the stillness and the darkness of time spent alone. — Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis, Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Stewardship - A Way of Life Music Ministry

TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we’ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing exam-ple he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pur-suit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconcil-ing touch of Christ to the world. Peace and Justice Lent is a great time for giving up some tele-vision and adding some spiritual reading. Many saints encouraged the reading of holy books. St. John Bosco said: “When we pray we speak to God; but when we read, God speaks to us.” St Jerome said: “Endeavor to

have always in your hand a pious book, that with this shield you may defend yourself against bad thoughts.” So how about putting down that remote and coming to visit our rolling library today? If you have questions or would like to be part of the Rolling Library Ministry, please contact Barbara Nickerson at (252) 261- 4700 or [email protected].

Beach Food Pantry If you are visiting the Outer Banks, please consider dropping off surplus food on your way home. There are baskets in the Church’s Gathering Space at Holy Redeemer for food donations. All food do-nations are welcome, but the Beach Food Pantry is espe-cially in need of the following items: laundry detergent (30-40 oz.), bar soap, toilet paper (4 roll packages only), ketchup, mustard, salad dressings, oil, healthy snacks, coffee, tea, nutritious cereal (no oatmeal), mayonnaise, canned corn, canned spaghetti sauce, elbow macaroni and canned meats. WE NEED BAGS! Please do not donate out-of-date, opened, used or perishable items, as health laws do not allow us to distribute these items. For more information on the Pantry’s mission and needs, please visit: www.beachfoodpantry.org.

Extraordinary Ministers of Communion Training

There will be a training session for all Extraordinary Min-isters of Communion at Holy Redeemer by the Sea on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 7:00 pm. This required training will be conducted by Fr. Bill. It is especially im-portant for our newer EMs and those who are contemplat-ing joining the Extraordinary Ministers of Communion and or Ministers to the Sick ministries. This training is a mandate for those EMs who hold cur-rent certificates from the Bishop and require "Renewal Certifications". And the great majority of us all require recertification this year. Our ministries are a blessing to Holy Redeemer by the Sea Parish. We thank you for your time, talent and com-mitment. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at: [email protected] or (252) 261-6940.

Friday Stations of the Cross

and Soup Supper During Lent we are all invited to discover the true

purpose of our beautiful Stations of the Cross as an inspi-ration for prayer and contemplation on the journey of Je-sus to his cross, death and resurrection. Each Friday dur-ing Lent (February 16 to March 23), our faith communi-ty will gather in to prayerfully re-member Christ's journey to Calvary. Immediately follow-ing the Stations, we will share a light supper of soup and bread prepared each week by a different Parish group. This supper of the poor will put us in mind of our less fortunate brothers and sisters. An offering will be taken up to help feed those whose plates are empty. February 16 will be hosted by the Liturgical Council.

Catholic Scout Camporee: There will be a Catho-lic Scout Camporee on March 9-11 at Camp Bowers in White Oak, NC. We are happy that Bishop Zarama will be the principal celebrant for the Camporee Mass this year. More information on the camporee can be found at: http://dioceseofraleigh.org/content/catholic-camporee.

2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal The 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal funds 30 ministries in the areas of charity, evangelization and worship. The greatest area that your donations are used is through char-ity to those in most need. The BAA provides one-third of all funding for Catholic Charities. Last year alone, they served over 59,000 individuals; many of these multiple times in a year. In addition to food, clothing, and hous-ing, Catholic Charities provides baby supplies, adoption assistance and immigration services. The BAA assists couples preparing for marriage as well as seniors who cannot afford those medicines that are needed to fight diseases. Overall, the BAA will provide over $7 million in the upcoming year to help those in physical and spir-itual need. Salesian Sunday Reflection

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday February 4, 2018 Today’s Gospel tells us that in the midst of busyness, even Jesus saw a need to find a quiet place to pray. St. Francis de Sales also stresses the importance of practicing mental prayer in the midst of our worldly activ-ities, and gives us a short simple method: I especially counsel you to practice the prayer of the heart. Set aside some time each day, if possible early in the morning, when your mind is less distracted and fresher after the night’s rest. Place yourself in God’s pres-ence. Remember that God is present in a most particular way in your heart and in the very center of your spirit. Do not hurry along and say many things but try to speak from your heart. A single Our Father said with feeling has greater value than many said quickly and hurriedly. Don’t be concerned about finishing the vocal prayer you intended to say. By often turning your eyes on Jesus in meditation, your whole being will be filled with him. You will learn his ways and form your actions after the pattern of his. From your meditation gather a few thoughts that you liked best and are most adapted for your improvement. During the day frequently think of them. Make particular resolutions for your own correction. On that same day, we must try to carefully practice them and to seek occasions, small or great, to do so. Since prayer places our mind in the brilliance of God’s light and exposes our ability to make choices to the warmth of God’s heavenly love, nothing else so effectively purifies our mind of ignorance and our will of disordered affections. Meditation makes the plants of our good desires grow green and flourish, and quenches the disordered pas-sions in our hearts. By keeping close to our Savior in meditation and ob-serving his words, actions and affections, we learn by his grace to speak, act, and will like him.

(St. Francis de Sales, Introduction to a Devout Life.)

“The ‘Hints’ of Lent” By Fr. John Hanley, osfs

It is hard to believe that Lent will soon begin. While the observance of Lenten practices (“What are you giving up?”) are very familiar to most of us, I would hazard a guess that far fewer Catholics are familiar in why we observe Lent in the first place. Per-haps a reminder of where Lent came from will help us all to observe it better this year and---hint, hint--- we have four people amongst us now who are reminders of Lent’s ori-gins and true purpose. Centuries ago, initiation into the Church was a decision not to be taken lightly. After all, one could be killed for making such a public and, in some cases, life-changing choice. Before an adult could be admitted to Baptism and Eucharist, they normally had to undertake a long and arduous process of education, prayer and experiences in com-munity life and service. When they were judged ready, they entered into a final 40-day retreat-like period of intense reflection, fasting and prayer that ended with their Baptism, Confirmation and reception of first Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Mass. During that last 40-day period, the rest of the baptized community was encouraged to join the catechu-mens (the unbaptized) and the candidates (those already baptized needing to complete their sacramental initiation or be received into full communion) in more intense prayer, fasting and alms-giving as a show of support and solidarity as well as to reinvigorate their own baptismal commitment. This 40-day period always took place in the beginning of Spring. Eventually an ancient word for springtime, “Lent”, began to be used to name this entire spiritual exercise. What began as an important preparation period for a small group of believers became a Church-wide experience in self-reflection, charity and pray-er. Since early this October, four members of our par ish have been involved in what is called the “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” or RCIA. One night a week, they gathered with other baptized members of the parish to reflect on Scripture, to pray and to learn about the Catholic Faith and the Catholic Church. On January 13th at the 5:00PM Mass at Holy Redeemer, they made their first public statement of their intention to complete their sacramental initiation at Easter. During that Mass, Debra Kowal (Catechumen), Alex Cahoon-Kight, Samantha Kelly and Liz Bauer (Candidates) were ritually blessed and welcomed to the community. On the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent, they will be ritually prayed over by the community to better see the place of sin, grace and forgiveness in their lives. The Lord’s Prayer and the Apostles’ Creed will also be “handed down” to them by the worshipping community. These brief rituals will take place on the 3rd and 5th Sunday of Lent at the 5:00 pm Mass at Holy Redeemer; the 4th Sunday at the 11:00 AM Mass at Holy Trinity. These special moments of the RCIA program are not only important to our catechumen and candidates but to the entire parish community, not just during Lent but hopefully to the rest of our lives. Please keep our catechumen, candidates, sponsors and teachers in your prayers as Lent approaches. Look for future items in the bulletin introducing our candidates and catechumen. Consider being part of the RCIA team for future classes and, if moved by the Spirit, consider becoming a fully initiated part of our great Catholic Church. May Lent be a time of renewal and new beginnings for us all.

We will be accepting nominations to fill open positions for the 2018 Pastoral Council. Candidates must be registered parishioners who are at least 18 years of age, in full communion with the Catholic Church, and already involved in at least one parish ministry. As a Pasto-ral Council member, you will assist the Pastor during a one, two or three term by:

• Sharing your ideas, suggestions, and insights • Plan and implement the goals of the Parish • Be the voice of parishioners • Represent parish ministries

More details regarding the work of the Pastoral Council can be obtained from the parish office. If you, or someone you know, has the energy and desire to contribute to our dynamic congregation through this important ministry, please contact the office for an appointment with Father Bill to receive a nomination form.
