SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER Let us pray…

This Tuesday, President Donald Trump will give the annual State of the Union address. We revisit today, the very same Inauguration prayer offered two years ago by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Let us pray… God of power and might, wisdom and justice: …We pray for our President, Donald Trump, to have before him at all times the charge to protect and defend the rights of all citizens, especially the weak and most vulnerable among us. …For all civic authorities, entrusted with care for the common good, to act with loving care in all they do. …For our nation, to continue to promote liberty and freedom, justice and peace for all. For the people of the United States, to engage in a spirit of co-operation, tranquility, and respect for one another and for all human life as good stewards of the gifts God has given us. …For the Church and its leaders, to serve as beacons of the light of Christ in a world in the shadows of fear, violence, pov-erty and death. …For the leaders and peoples of our world to work together to bring about peace and unity, and an end to all wars, divisions and violence.

Amen. Brought to you by the Social Justice Committee Faith Formation for Adults

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Happy Catholic Schools Week! Jesus was the one sent by God to bring salvation to the world. Jesus announced that mission using the framework we hear in today's Gospel from the prophet Isaiah: glad tidings will be brought to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. Jesus inaugurates the Kingdom of God in his person—through his life, death, and Resurrection. We are charged with the task of continuing the mission that Jesus began. Of course, we are not left on our own to do this, but are blessed with the Holy Spirit who comes upon us during Baptism to help us continue Jesus’ mission. One way that Jesus’ word is spread today and His mission is continued through Catholic schools. This week, we cele-brate Catholic Schools Week. During Catholic Schools Week, we take the time to thank and appreciate all that makes our Catholic school the community of faith filled individuals that it is. We thank the parish community as a whole. We thank you for the daily prayers that each one of you offer for the stu-dents and families of the school. We thank you for celebrating the Eucharist with us once a month during school day masses. We thank you for your never ending support as community members. We thank the parents. We thank you for choosing to send your child to Queen of Apostles School. We thank you for entrusting your children to us on a daily basis. We thank you for partnering with us as you are the primary educators of your children. We thank you for the countless time and energy that you spend with your children in preparation for their daily school activities. We thank you for your tireless efforts and support in making our school not just a school, but a community. We thank the faculty and staff. We thank you for making a commitment to the vocation of Catholic education. We thank you for the countless hours that you spend preparing for lessons, grading papers, decorating classrooms, super-vising, and all the other countless items you do on a daily basis. We thank you for the many hats you wear as a teach-er. We thank you for the love and care that you have for each and every one of your students. We thank the students. We thank you for giving your best on your work each and every day. We thank you for the laughter and joy you fill the campus grounds with each and every day. We thank you for being you because without you, our school would not be the same. We thank Fr. Thuc and Fr. Rey and all the previous pastors and priests of Queen of Apostles. We thank you for sup-porting the mission of Catholic education. We thank you for being a presence on our campus and at our events. We thank you for praying for us and for presiding over mass. We thank the people not mentioned here. We thank you for understanding the importance of Catholic schools and for supporting our mission. Together we continue to work to progress the mission of Jesus, by working as a community of faith filled individuals. Happy Catholic Schools Week!

Peacemakers Chiara Corbella Petrillo

Chiara Petrillo was a young, vibrant woman who married and was carrying a child when she learned that she had cancer. She met her husband at Medjugorje, the shrine in what was Yugoslavia. They faced many hardships together including the deaths of two of their children. When she learned that she was pregnant for a third time, Chiara was overjoyed. When she learned she had cancer, she rejected any treatment that would endanger her child. She leaned on God’s grace to get her through her hardships. When she died, her husband, Enrico said that “love ex-ists” and that it was a wonderful thing to be married and to show love in their lives. They emphasized that Chiara was a normal young woman but that the difference was her capacity “to cast everything on the Father, to wel-come the grace needed for whatever step she had to make.” People said that she was ever joyful. That joy lives on in those close to her and those that she affected. Her cause for canonization was announced on June 13, 2017, five years after her death. How can we make sure that Joy is present in our lives, no matter what obstacles we encounter? Brought to you by the Social Justice Committee

The Diamond Jubilee Needs Your Help

Do you know someone who might? Have you researched our history before? Are you interested in helping us compile the infor-mation we gather? If you answered yes to any of these ques-tions, we need to speak with you. Please e-mail us at [email protected] and a committee member will contact you to discuss what you have, who you know and how you can help.
