Staff: Enhancing Teaching
Underlying question: what approaches, both formal and informal do higher education institutions and individuals use to improve teaching?
Staff: Enhancing Teaching
Commissioned team set out five questions:1. How are staff in teaching roles supported, formally
and informally, to develop their teaching?2. How are staff supported at different stages in their
career?3. What recognition and reward is there for teaching
staff?4. How is it known that staff are developing their
teaching, and how is practice shared?5. What are the challenges and opportunities in all of
these?
Staff: enhancing teaching
Why so pertinent now?
What we’ve done
• Review of literature• Interviews with key contacts in HEIs•Workshop/focus group• Short survey aimed at staff teaching in HE
How staff are supported
• Focus on systematic support for new staff• Primarily PGCertHELT but in transition with
some interesting new developments in the context of the revised UKPSF
• Approach to CPD much less consistent•Diversity of contexts and needs – how to
reach staff?
Recognition and reward
•Growth in student led award schemes• Sense from staff that teaching enhancement
is squeezed out by administration and discipline research
Evidence for enhancement
• Inconclusive responses – lots of evaluation, use of NSS but not clear that there is good evidence of teaching enhancement•Growth in learning and teaching conferences
which are valued by staff but still a strong demand for opportunities to share in the context of discipline, within and between institutions.

technical to the pedagogic• Addressing student diversity – link to CFE• Career long development / new staff / all staff
Issues and challenges (2)
How do we share good practice? Within and between institutions. Can we build on cross-institutional collaboration through the enhancement theme process? And much more – over to you …
