Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome Back Welcome back to Term 2. We trust that you have had an enjoyable school break. We have an exciting range of programs on offer and we look forward to the term ahead.

Attendance Matters Regular attendance at school is essential for children to achieve their educational best. Did you know? If a student is absent from school for eight days each school term, they will have missed out on an entire year of learning by the end of primary school!

We understand that, on occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Some justified reasons for absences are:

Illness

unavoidable medical appointment

being required to observe a religious holiday

exceptional family circumstances.

However, we strongly encourage you to avoid keeping your child away from school because of sleeping in, non-urgent travel, birthdays, social visits and other minor events.

Ensuring that children regularly attend school is one of the most important things parents /

carers can do to support learning. Being at school, on time:

maximises your child’s opportunity to engage in valuable learning experiences

ensures that your child does not miss out on carefully planned and sequenced

learning activities

helps children learn the importance of routine and punctuality

supports children in forming and maintaining friendships with others.

Prestons Public School recognises the importance of working collaboratively with families to

support the regular attendance of students. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you

would like to discuss strategies for improving attendance. Remember, every day counts!

Classroom Chat with …..

5 Rosellas

Term One was a busy term in 5 Rosellas. We started the

term having a fun day at the school swimming carnival.

We all enjoyed spending the day in the pool playing

games with our friends. We all learnt a lot about

swimming, bike and sun safety throughout the day.

We established some great friendships with the

Kindergarten students. We help them to practise their

gross motor skills each Wednesday, and at the end of

the term we helped them to make Easter crafts.

Towards the end of the term, we were excited to see

the builders begin work on our new classrooms. We

watched the tree loppers chop down trees, and earth

graders flatten the ground in preparation for building.

K Echidnas

Wow! It’s hard to believe that Kindergarten have already been at school for a whole term! We hope that everyone had a fantastic break and are ready to get back into learning for Term 2.

Last term we were very busy learning our letter names and sounds, numbers, beginning to read, and participating in lots of great activities. Everyone in Kindergarten did an outstanding job of settling into school. Well done K Echidna’s and friends!

A highlight of the end of Term 1 for K Echidna’s was the Easter hat parade. Everyone at Prestons including K Echidna’s worked so hard to create awesome Easter hats to show off in the parade. K Echidna’s put in an outstanding effort making their hats. What a fun day!

K Echidna’s loved learning a wide variety of skills through fun experiences last term showing great achievement which will continue in term 2. We are very eager to challenge our brains through a range of new topics and continue to build upon previous skills in term 2.

K Echidna’s would like to thank staff, parents and carers for their support.

few blocks away from the school

NAPLAN Online Newsletter 2019

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests

are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5,

7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and

numeracy.

Between Tuesday 14 May and Friday 24 May 2019, our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be

computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum,

and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. Prestons Public School will be conducting a practice

test for our Years 3 and 5 students on Wednesday 3 April 2019 in preparations for the actual tests in May.

To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.
