Some thoughts: Sometimes people, young and not so young, tell me that they have been using drugs. When I ask them which one, it is usually marijuana, though at times they use hard drugs. Of course,

alcohol is a drug, too. One can become addicted to it and that makes alcohol dangerous. A few young persons have tried to convince me that using marijuana is not as bad as alcohol because it is not as addictive. That may be the present case, but growers are constantly looking to increase the levels of the addictive substance in marijuana, THC. Also, long-term users of marijuana, which is usually inhaled deeply, dramatically increases the incidence of lung cancer. The real difference between alcohol and marijua-na in the United States is access. One can buy alco-hol in every kind of store that has a license. While the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes is on the rise it is less available and more strictly regulated than alcohol. That makes alcohol more dangerous. But, what happens as marijuana becomes more available? Ultimately, my question is about why anyone wants to alter their state of consciousness? In my experience people who use alcohol, marijuana, other drugs, and even tobacco, are looking for the “feeling” of relief. “It relaxes me,” users say. In our high stress environments there are pressures to suc-ceed according to certain worldly criteria – competi-tion, money, power, envy, etc. – there are strong de-sires to find the means to relax and relieve stress. However, the so-called “pain” or “stress” or “desire to relax” which stimulated the first use of the drug at times disappears and then the addiction takes over. The person who is addicted never wanted to be an addict. The addict simply loses the control and the ability to decide. Recovery is possible with effort and help, including prayer. I pray marijuana users are aware that the unregu-lated market for this drug has resulted in tainted ma-rijuana. Unknown to the buyer and user, some so-called varieties of “synthetic marijuana” have been poisoned by herbicides and even rat poison. People have died from just one use of marijuana. To say that it is not dangerous is not true. Again, I pray that people of faith may find prayer and quiet meditation as means to relax and distress. There is very little cost or danger in this method of stress relief. Peace, Fr. Andy

Pensamientos para reflexionar: . Algunas veces personas jóvenes, o no tan jóvenes, me platican que están consumiendo drogas. Cuando les pregunto que clase de drogas están consumiendo, usualmente es mariguana, aunque a veces resultan ser drogas mas adictivas. Por supuesto que

el alcohol es un tipo de droga también. Una persona puede hacerse adicto al alcohol y eso lo hace peligroso. Algunos jóvenes han tratado de convencerme que usar mariguana no es tan malo como tomar alcohol porque no es tan adictiva. Puede ser que ese sea el caso hoy en día, pero hay distribuidores que están buscando constantemente maneras de como aumentar los niveles de la substancia adictiva en la mariguana, THC. Además, los usuarios a largo plazo de marihuana, que generalmente se inhala profundamente, aumentan drásticamente la incidencia de cáncer de pulmón. La verdadera diferencia entre el alcohol y la marihuana en los Estados Unidos es el acceso. Uno puede comprar alcohol en cualquier tipo de tienda que tenga una licencia. Si bien el uso de marihuana con fines medicinales está en aumento, está menos disponible y está más estrictamente regulado que el alcohol. Eso hace que el alcohol sea más peligroso. Pero, ¿qué pasa cuando la marihuana este más accesible? Ultimadamente, mi pregunta es acerca del por qué alguien quiere alterar su estado de conciencia. En mi experiencia, las personas que usan alcohol, marihuana, otras drogas e incluso tabaco, están buscando una "sensación" de alivio. "Me relaja", dicen los usuarios. En nuestro ambiente existe mucha presión enfocada en sobre salir basados en ciertos criterios de nuestras expectativas mundanas: competencia, dinero, poder, envidia, etc. Hay fuertes deseos de encontrar los medios para relajarse y aliviar el estrés. Sin embargo, el llamado "dolor" o "estrés" o "deseo de relajación" que estimuló el primer uso de la droga a veces desaparece y luego la adicción se toma control de nuestra vida. La persona que es adicta nunca pensó en querer ser un adicto. El adicto simplemente pierde el control y la capacidad de decidir. La recuperación es posible con esfuerzo y ayuda, incluyendo la oración. Rezo para que las personas que usan marihuana sean conscientes de que el mercado no regulado de esta droga ha resultado en marihuana contaminada. Desconocido para el comprador y el usuario, algunas de las llamadas variedades de "marihuana sintética" han sido envene-nadas por herbicidas e incluso veneno para ratas. Hay gente que ha muerto de un solo uso de marihuana. Decir que no es peligrosa no es verdad. Abrigos para Niños es solo para los niños hasta edad de 18. Los niños que tienen 18 años necesitan asistir a la escuela y necesitan graduarse en la primavera. Necesita llevar: 1. I.D. para todos los adultos en la casa 2. Documentación para comprobar su domicilio 3. Meditación ¿Que puede hacer una madre cuando la vida de su hijo se ve amenazada? Cuando Herodes sentencio a muerte a todos aquellos niños inocentes, Dios advirtió a José. Sin tiempo para empacar ni despedidas, tu esca-paste a plena noche. Sin hogar, exhausta, hambrienta, tan solo con los recuerdos del hogar y la familia y un futuro incierto por delante, y no tuviste mas refugio que el amor de aquellos que te necesitaban. Oración María, muéstranos como sobrevivir, cuando nos veamos arrancados de aquello que conoce-mos y amamos. Aunque somos descendientes de inmigrantes, nunca ha sido fácil prosperar en tierra extranjera. Enséñanos como resistir y vivir en paz. Muéstranos como superar nuestra vulnerabilidad con paciencia y amor. Amen.
