St. Vincent de Paul Society NEWSLETTER Published by and for Vincentians http://www.stvincentdepaul.net/Vincentian-Support October 2018 Diocesan Council of Phoenix, AZ Vol. 20 No. 9 “It is for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give them.” St. Vincent de Paul During the Ozanam Formation Experience (OFE classes), we often show a video from our National Council entitled Legends in which several long-time Vincentians share some of their most memorable stories. One of those Vincentians share that, when he joined the Society, he was interviewed by two Vincentians and allowed to join the conference only after being formally accepted. While this practice may on the surface seem foreign to most of us, it is actually clearly rooted in the Rule of the Society and allows both the candidate and the conference or council concerned to enter into a period of prayerful discernment. There is great value in knowing that as a new Vincentian you have been chosen, selected, and formally commissioned. Individuals outside of our conferences and councils often get the impression that we are so desperate for members that anyone can join our Conferences, and there are no conditions for membership. Nothing could be farther from the truth. While the Society is open to all those who seek to live their faith, loving and committing themselves to their neighbor in need (Rule Article 6.4), as Vincentians we must realize that not everyone who supports the Society is called to be an active (full-enhanced) member. Some individuals are called to be associate or contributing members while still others are called to be collaborators, donors, or supporters. Being an active (full-enhanced) member of a conference is a privilege and one that carries with it many responsibilities. The call in our Rule for us to propose candidates for membership is not a call to exclusivity but rather a call to discernment and celebration. So many of our new members aren't even sure when they joined the Society or if they are really members. Time after time I hear people say that they joined the Society just by showing up to a few meetings and that they guess they are members now because no one has said otherwise. Continued on Page 2 The Value of Membership The names of persons proposed for active (enhanced-full) membership are to be submitted to the President of the Conference or Council concerned. The President will provide information concerning the recommended person to the Conference or Council. If approved, the candidate will be admitted as a member and given a Vincentian welcome at the next meeting. (Rule Part II Statute 3).

“It is for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give them.” St. Vincent de Paul

During the Ozanam Formation Experience (OFE classes), we often show a video from our National Council entitled Legends in which several long-time Vincentians share some of their most memorable stories. The Value of Membership

The names of persons proposed for active (enhanced-full) membership are to be submitted to the President of the Conference or Council concerned. The President will provide information concerning the recommended person to the Conference or Council. If approved, the candidate will be admitted as a member and given a Vincentian welcome at the next meeting. (Rule Part II Statute 3).

Membership Having a formal process for admittance into a conference provides the candidate and the conference a time to get to know one another and offers the prospective member the opportunity to understand what becoming a Vincentian is about. It is a special time for prayer and discernment leading up to acceptance and celebration. It places greater value on becoming a Vincentian and allows the conference and the candidate the opportunity to listen to the voice of God and to follow the Holy Spirit in discerning who is being called to live out the Vincentian vocation through active (full-enhanced) membership. Does your conference have a procedure in place for accepting new members? If not, perhaps it is time to develop and implement such a process; one that is centered in prayerful discernment and joyful celebration of those who have answered the call to be Vincentians.

Looking for New Officers? Remember our SVdP requirements.

According to the Rule of the Society and the Standards of Affiliation for the Phoenix Diocesan SVdP Council and its associated Councils and Conferences all Conferences and Councils must have four or more full members with a full slate of officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. For Phoenix Conferences and Councils those officers must be full enhanced members who have completed the OFE requirements. Additionally, the Conference/Council President and Treasurer may not be related to one another by kinship, marriage, adoption and /or any other familial relationship or domestic partnership. Furthermore, such relationships may not exist between the Conference/Council President, Treasurer, and any other member who is designated as a signer on Conference/Council financial accounts.

    You Own Seven Stores!

The SVdP Diocesan Council of Phoenix operates seven thrift stores throughout the Valley for the benefit of our conferences and the poor. Each and every Vincentian has a part in the ownership and the operation of these stores. Our stores are a vital part of the works of our Society. They provide affordable items to the working poor, generate revenue for Diocesan programs such as our dining

rooms, and they provide items directly to the poor through our conferences with the voucher and care card programs. As Vincentians, we have a responsibility to support our stores so that they can continue to support us and the needy. How can you help? Our stores need volunteers. They need donations. They need shoppers. In other words, they need you and your support. Did you know that there are a group of bulletin ads promoting our stores on the Diocesan web page? They are listed on the VSS page at the bottom under the title Bulletin Ads. Promoting our stores can be as simple as getting these ads in your Parish bulletin or talking us up to your family and friends. With ownership, comes responsibility, so let’s all commit to stepping up to the plate in support of our stores.

Out and about, with Sandy. The District 11 Social was a success! After our Morning of Reflection, I attended the District 11 Social. It gave me the opportunity to meet Vincentians that I haven't seen for a long time and also meet newer members whom I had not met before. At right: Jim and Joann performing their last act as President and Spiritual Advisor. Below: the commissioning ceremony for the new officers, followed by a commitment prayer for all members.

    Congratulations to everyone!

I didn't do very well cooking my hot dog over the open flame, but don’t worry, Adrianne came to my rescue and so I didn't starve. Thanks, Adrianne. Thank you John for inviting me to join your Conference for an evening of fellowship sitting around a bon fire. It was truly an enjoyable evening. Sandy.

Resurrection Conference conducted its annual ice-cream social on September 15 and 16. The members of Resurrection Conference chipped in to provide the ice cream. This is their personal way of expressing their gratitude to the parishioners of Resurrection. They are so generous in their support of our conference. Moreover, the outstanding difference this year was the participation of members from the parish youth group under the leadership of Tracey Siedlinski-Seyler. They helped serve at the 10:00 am Mass and at 5:00 pm, the Youth Mass. We have increased our associates by six and hope to inspire and recruit others to volunteer and join the Society through events like this one and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
