Gospel Reading: Luke 1:26-38 This Sunday we read the story of the angel Gabriel’s an-nouncement to Mary about the birth of Jesus. This story is found only in Luke’s Gospel. On this fourth Sunday of Ad-vent, the liturgy shifts our attention from John the Baptist to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Both John and Mary serve as important figures for our reflection during the season of Advent; they both played instrumental roles in preparing the way for Jesus. Last week we reflected on John the Bap-tist’s announcement that the Savior was among us, alt-hough not yet recognized. This week we reflect upon Mary’s example of faith and obedience to God, traits which permitted her to receive the angel’s message that God’s Son would be born as a human person, as one of us.

We are familiar with the story of the Annunciation, and it is fitting that we recall how God announced the birth of Jesus as we make our final preparations for our celebration of the Incarnation. The angel Gabriel visited Mary, a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph. Mary greeted the an-gel’s news with awe and wonder and asked how it could be possible that she could give birth to a child. In his reply, the angel Gabriel announced the seemingly impossible reality: the child to be born would be conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and would be God’s own Son. The angel reported to Mary another miracle; her relative Eliza-beth was also pregnant despite having been thought to be unable to have a child. Mary’s response to the angel, which is called her fiat, is an example of complete faith and obedience to God.

The story of the Annunciation calls to our attention God’s wondrous action in human history. God chose a human person to give birth to his Son so that all humanity would know God’s salvation. Mary, already full of God’s grace, was able to cooperate in this great plan for our salvation. Thus Jesus was born as one of us, fully human and also fully divine. This is the mystery we prepare to celebrate at Christmas, the mystery of the Incarnation. In the model of Mary, we pray that we will be people of faith who recognize God’s saving plan for us and are able respond with obedi-ence.

Fourth Sunday of Advent December 20, 2020

  • From the Pastor’s Desk December 20, 2020 Dear Parish Family, Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent and our final candle is lit on our Advent Wreath. There is a great anticipation as the time approaches for final touches as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will arrive in just a few days. This year 2020 has been a year like no other in our lifetimes. Here at St. Thomas we will try to keep things as “normal” as possible during this Christmas season because we all need Christmas! Our music, decorations, liturgies will all be as they have been in years past. Over the last few weeks we have been preparing for the celebration of Our Savior’s Birth. I would like to take this opportunity to thank one and all for the work you put in to make our Christmas a special celebration. Many hands helped to decorate our church for the upcoming Christmas Season. A big thank you goes to all the men who helped to carry in and erect the trees, and to those who helped with the placement of the poinsettias. Of course the decorations could not have happened without the generosity of our parish family in the Christmas Flowers offering and so I thank everyone who donated. You can see the fruit of your generosity at work here in the Sanctuary of our church. Our Giving Tree was very different this year. Although there was no physical tree in the church our parish-ioners were very generous. I thank all of you who donated and helped to brighten the Christmas season for so many people. I thank Lorraine McMillan and her team for coordinating the “Giving Tree” ministry. I thank our liturgical ministers: Altar Servers (even though they are on hiatus during this pandemic), Lec-tors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, and Greeters for their dedicated work not only this Advent and Christmas, but for every day throughout the year. I thank those who schedule of our ministers: Al-tar Servers-Tracey Hann, Lectors-Dawn Nelson, and EM’s-Danny Bitecola. I thank Tom Rossano – our video and sound tech, Dan Bitecola, Ann Marie Rogalcheck-Frissell, and Tom Heaney who all help with the videos. I thank Dr. Molina for his help in editing our videos and getting them up and running on social media. I thank Dr. Patricio Molina, our Director of Music here at St. Thomas, Nancy Cardone who is providing the music in Herron Hall, Kim Mesiti, our cantor, as well as our other Christmas cantors Mallory and Michelle, and our choir. As I write this I look forward to hearing them sing, as their voices add to the beauty of our liturgies each Sunday. I thank them for their hard work and dedication throughout the year. In just a few days families will gather for their Christmas Eve dinner. Gifts will be neatly placed under the tree. Children will anxiously go to be waiting for the visit of Santa Claus during the night. The homes are deco-rated with Christmas trees and manger scenes. The delicious desserts and special treats will soon be ready. There may be a final visit to the post office as late cards and/or packages are mailed, or to the store or computer, perhaps, for a last-minute gift. Why all this special holiday mood? Of course, it’s Christmas Day and we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ. The great prophets foretold that He was going to come into the world to bring Peace. He was to be born in Bethlehem, the city of David, of humble parents, Mary and Joseph. The Christ Child was born in a stable be-cause there was no room for Him in the Inn. How beautiful is the story that has been told for centuries, and we never grow tired of hearing it and retelling it! Many people go out of their way to wish each other a Merry Christmas. There are the usual festive parties and gift-giving. The poinsettia plants, holly, and other decorations make this rather dull and dark time of year very beautiful. The outside of our houses are illuminated with lights and, hopefully, a manger scene, all to say to our neighbors and friends that “Jesus is the reason for the Season”. Take time to visit the manger scene and explain to our young people the story of Christmas and all the char-acters who are part of it. I love to see families gathered around the crèche as this beautiful story is told to a new generation. Thank you for your Stewardship of Time, Talent, and Treasure and for all that you do for our parish. Let's continue to pray for one another. Be well and stay safe! On behalf of myself, the clergy, and parish staff I wish you and yours all of the special blessings of this Christmas Season! Love,

    God is love

Why do Catholics believe in a “virgin birth?”

Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith. December 2020

Before Jesus was born, Isaiah was told, “the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). The virgin birth was documented in Luke 1:34. Had Jesus been conceived like the rest of

us, He could not have been a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

“And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

We call God “Creator,” “Savior,” “Father,” yet when we really want to understand who He is, one word is enough. God is love. “Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.” (1 John 4:-8). Love is the very nature and essence of God Himself. He doesn’t just love, He is love. In fact, that’s why He created us, so we can have a share in that love. We are not simply swept up in the good will God has toward all his creations. He loves each of us as individuals and that love is never-ending and unconditional. “Can

a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

See, upon the palms of my hands I have written your name” (Isaiah 49:15-16). This is not necessarily because we are

good; we can’t possibly earn the

vast love He has for us. But the good news

is we can’t lose it either.

Because He loves us so much, He denies us nothing

that will draw us closer to him and to life in Heaven. "For God so loved the world," Jesus declared, "that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

    Holiday advice The holiday season

is an important time in the Church

but, in the midst of a pandemic, it can also be a time when health worries, money worries, family worries, and every kind of worry intrudes. Instead, try to follow this advice from St. Paul, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8).

Unborn joy “When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb …” (Luke 1:40). Even in the womb, John was filled with joy to serve God. With the coming of Christmas, look for ways to do God’s will and then leap for joy as you fulfill His plan.

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins"(Matthew 1:21).

The Rosary is a simple prayer adapted from the complex prayers of medieval monks. It’s a powerful prayer because in it, we ask Mary—whose prayers are never refused—to pray for us. In addition, the

mysteries of the Rosary introduce us to the lives of Jesus and Mary. Each mystery is associated with a fruit. For example, the fruit of the mystery of the Annunciation is humility. Praying the

Rosary opens us to the graces to be more Christ-like. A prayer with roots in Scripture, the Rosary begins with the Apostles' Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries of the Catholic Faith. The Our Father that introduces each mystery is from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary that follows is from the angel's words announcing Christ's birth and Elizabeth's greeting to Mary. St. Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The repetition in the Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a group.

Dec. 14 – St. John of the Cross (1591). As a Carmelite, St. John led a reform in the Order to encourage more prayer and simplicity. Briefly jailed over a misunderstanding, some of his best spiritual writing came from this experience. Dec. 21 – St. Peter Canisius (1597). Born in Holland, he was ordained into the Society of Jesus and vigorously safeguarded the Catholic faith through writings and teaching. His work, The Catechism of the Catholic Church, is still used today.

Dec. 26 – St. Stephen (first century). A deacon of the early Church, St. Stephen preached that God can be found everywhere, not just in one place like the temple. He angered the Jewish authorities and became the first martyr of the Catholic Church. Dec. 27 – The Holy Family (1st century). On the feast of the Holy Family, we celebrate the family life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. By their love and support of one another the Holy Family is a model for all Christian families.

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). An amazing truth occurred at the first Christmas; God came and lived among us. Even more amazing, He continues to live among us. During Advent, take steps to become more aware of His presence. Begin each day in his presence. Before you get out of bed in the morning, place yourself in His presence. Take a few minutes to focus on a sacred picture or an image that will help you to

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Seek God’s Word. Start your day with Scripture such

as the daily Mass readings (found on www.usccb.org) or another reading you choose. Ask God to teach you during the day from that selection. Speak to him throughout the day. Picture the Lord next to you throughout your day and talk with Him as you experience the day together. Brother Lawrence, a 17th century monk, suggested prayer

shouldn’t be confined to formal times.

Awaken to the presence of God on Christmas morning

Mary and Joseph were forced to travel in the last stages of her pregnancy from Nazareth to Bethlehem. On foot or donkey, it was a dirty and exhausting journey. Once there, they had no option for decent housing and had to stay in a stable with animals. Young Mary gave birth in crude conditions with no friend or family to help. After a short time, they fled to Egypt with their newborn to escape threats from the government, and stayed there for several years. There

were no friendly faces to greet the family once they arrived

and they had to make their own way in an unfamiliar land. Refugees all over the world flee violence like the Holy Family. Catholics have a special charge to protect them and those who are vulnerable:

children, elderly, and poor. Like Mary’s and Joseph’s,

God has a special place for each of us in his plan of

salvation. Prayerfully ask God what he wants you to do for him

    and his kingdom.

How do Catholicsbenefit from praying the Rosary?

Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23, Godchooses each of us in a special way.
