CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2017 LIVING AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES
This year, the Church is celebrating Catechetical Sunday on Sept 17, 2017, and the theme will be "Living as Mis-sionary Disciples." Those who the Community has desig-nated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be com-missioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each per-son plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mis-sion as a community of faith.
BUDDY BACKPACK PROGRAM FOR 2017/18 Summer vacation is over and our students are back in school. This is the time that the Buddy Backpack program is organizing for another successful year. This is a chance for our church family to come together and help make sure that students have food for over the weekend. This pro-gram is designed to provide children in needy households with food for the weekend when the school meals are not available and works with each school system to identify the children. Donations could include oatmeal, tuna, canned beef stew, fruit cups, cereal, breakfast bars, juices etc.; Foods that are nourishing and that little fingers can handle. Our St. Thomas family has been so generous in the past and I pray for the same support again this year. Monetary donations are also accepted and checks can be made out to First United Methodist Church. Let us keep our students fed. The Backpack bucket will be in the east foyer. The donations will be taken to the First United Methodist Church. Thanks so much! - Judi Matsuba
SACRED HEARTS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
LADIES AUXILIARY Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary of Sacred Heart in d'Iberville is collecting items for children 5 and un-der. You may bring your items to the church office now through September 17.
SCRIPTURE CORNER GOD’S WATCHERS In the ancient wor ld watchmen were extremely impor tant people. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God’s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today’s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. We are also held accountable for the lives of the members of Christ’s body around us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

Life is messy. We make wrong turns that turn out to be the right ones. We make right turns out as wrong ones. Some-times we make wrong turns that just keep getting “wronger”. Where is Jesus in all this? Does He really have a plan for me today? What about in the future? Will I be happy on His path? What if I’m not? Is following God just an oppres-sive monotony of constantly saying yes to things that I don’t want to do?
Gulf Coast ADORE Ministries will be at St. Thomas on Sept 14 at 6:30pm. All ages invited.
