A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Page 3

Dear Friends,

We enjoy our last weekend of the Christmas Season with the celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord. As has been true of all my years here at St Theresa, Christmas has been exceptionally well celebrated and I’d like to thank the Parish Pastoral and Extended Staff, the Liturgy Committee, Environment and Art Team and all the other volunteers who have labored hard to make this experience a joyous celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Thank you all for everything!

On behalf of Fr. Matt, Fr. Tom and Fr. Michael I’d like to express our gratitude to everyone who has shared gifts with us this holiday season. It is impossible to thank everyone by name, but please know we are all very grateful for remembering us these past few weeks. Your kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated. It will be back to my Ideal Protein diet now as I try to lose all the weight I gained in December! :)

This weekend also marks the first weekend of the new year. As we are want to do this time of year, we frequently make resolutions to get us motivated in making this year better than the year before. If you are the type of person who likes to make commitments for the new year, might I suggest a few that pertains to our spiritual lives and St. Theresa Parish?

Pray more often. Find an opportunity to pray each day. If you are morning person, pray at that time, if you are the opposite, then pray in the evening. Routine is the key here. The more time we can spend in prayer the better, and you will reap the positive results in just about every facet of your life as well! I also encourage you to explore different prayer forms too. The Mass, rosary, adoration, novenas, meditation, Lectio Divina, Taize, Liturgy of the Hours and more are all beneficial ways for us to draw ourselves closer in communion with God.

Participate in the sacramental life of the Church. Attend Mass regularly. Receive the Eucharist as often as possible. Ask yourself this question: when was the last time I received the Sacrament of Reconciliation? What’s holding me back? Again, the sacraments are Jesus’ gift to us and their benefits impact our whole lives!

St. Theresa is your spiritual home. Make use of it! We offer all kinds of spiritual, social and service oriented opportunities to be engaged in parish life, whether as a participant or an organizer. We are here to serve you. In a world that seems to draw one further and further into isolation, our parish provides an opportunity to form communion as one family of faith.

Please support all that we do in the parish financially. Your donations go to providing the ministries and activities that make our parish the home that it is. We cannot do it without your support, as we completely dependent on your generosity to make ends meet. I’ve noticed over the last few months that our weekly offerings are less most weeks than what they were the year prior. Please continue to support our parish so that we can continue to do what we do. There is much to be excited about here at St. Theresa! And we need your continued support to make it all happen. Thank you! We are also encouraging people who work to find out if your place of employment offers matching grants for donations to St. Theresa Parish and/or School. That way your generosity can be extended that much further!

Enjoy your week and God bless you all!

Blessing of a Home at Epiphany A Brief Explanation of the Inscription Over the

Doorway of the Home The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the Three Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words “Christus mansionem benedicat.” “May Christ bless this house.”

The letters recall the day on which the inscription is made, as well as the purpose of blessing.

The crosses represent the protection of the Precious Blood of Christ, whom we invoke, and the holiness of the Three Magi sanctified by their adoration of the Infant Christ. The inscription is made above the front door, so that all who enter and depart this year may enjoy God’s blessing. The month of January still bears the name of the Roman god Janus, the doorkeeper of heaven and protector of the beginning and end of things. This blessing “christens” the ancient Roman observance of the first month. The inscription is made of chalk, a product of clay, which recalls the human nature taken by the Adorable and Eternal Word of God in the womb of the Virgin Mary, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

(Taken from the website http://VultusChristi.org)

A Blessed Epiphany to All!

(All family members gather around the main door of the home where one member prays the following prayer.)

The Lord be with you. ALL: And with your Spirit

Father, we give you thanks and praise for having made manifest in Christ Jesus your eternal plan of salvation. Jesus, your only-begotten Son, made his dwelling place among us and by his life-giving presence graced the homes and tables of men and women like ourselves. He grew and matured within the household of Mary and Joseph. His stay at the house of Zacheus became a moment of salvation. He sent his disciples to bring his peace into whatever home they entered.

Father, we give you special thanks on this feast of the Epiphany, for leading the magi from afar to the home of Christ who has given light and hope to all peoples. By the power of the guiding Spirit, may his presence be renewed in our home. Make it a place of human wholeness and divine holiness, a place of joy and laughter, a place of forgiveness and peace, and a place of service and prayer.

(Mark the door as follows: 20+C+M+B+18) As we mark this door, send an angel of mercy to guard our home and repel all powers of Darkness. Fill all who live here with a love for Christ and warm them with the fullness of your grace.

And so Father may all who dwell here or grace its portals with their presence, find the joy and thoughtfulness of Mary the Mother of God, and thus praise and thank you eternally together with Jesus, the light of the nations, in the unity of the Holy Spirit and the Church, now and forever. Amen.

Our Stewardship

Building On Our Faith Together

It is because of the enormous generosity of the people of St. Theresa and friends that we have been able to address many of the items on our Parish Master Plan through our capital campaign “Building On Our Faith Together.”

If you have not already done so, I am hopeful that you will consider completing your pledge, and/or giving a first-time or subsequent gift in support of construction and improvement efforts to the degree that your personal financial situation will allow.

If you would consider such a gift, please go online to GiveCentral at https://www.givecentral.org/location/314/event/7569, or contact Katherine McIntyre at the Pauline Center, 847-358-7760 x.104 or [email protected].

I thank you very much for your continued support of St. Theresa Parish. May God bless you as we enter into the Christmas season.

Gratefully, Fr. Tim Fairman

What is CMRTYA: A Catholic women’s social and spiritual group targeted for mothers who have at least one child between the ages of 15 and 30.

Raising young adults...these are the years where our precious children are growing into adults - discovering and experimenting in the broader world and becoming their own person. During these years our children will likely experience the most change in their lives which will set them on their path as adults. This is a stressful time for them - and us! Ladies, if you haven’t begun to color your hair at this point (or tug on it!), you may begin at this stage. In your ever-busy family life, do you want to connect with other moms who “get your parenting and life challenge” at this stage and want to get together for a few laughs and fun. This group provides moms a social forum to gather with other women who share their faith and values in a highly casual, no pressure (seriously, who needs more pressure) environment where you can participate in as little or as much as you would like to and develop amazing friendships. We will initially meet to determine the activities the group has the most interest in and we will plan accordingly. Oh, and don’t worry, there’s no cost to join this group. (Who needs another bill, right?). You’ll only pay for activities with a cost you participate in.

Some possible activities could be: Mom Night Out at local restaurant • Wine tasting at local winery Book club • Play Cards (Euchre) or Bunco at someone’s home Walking or exercise group • Charity event • Educational speakers Professional chef to prepare a dinner/provide recipes Spa night • Attend a play • Visit an event or venue “in the city”

Our first meeting is January 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Dolan Center where we will meet each other and share ideas on our activities, gage level of interest in each and decide on the frequency of events and gatherings for 2018.

We ask you to RSVP to [email protected] by January 19 so we can prepare refreshments.

Memorial Mass for the Unborn Saturday, January 20, 5:00 pm

What: A special Pro-Life Mass, immediately followed by a brief Candlelight Prayer Service in the church

Why: To honor the memory of over 60 million children who have been killed in the US since abortion was legalized 45 years

ago this month, especially the 95 babies who die every day in Illinois alone. To offer hope and help to those suffering from the emotional effects of abortion, either their own or someone close to

them. To inspire each one of us to be a voice for the voiceless for the biggest Civil Rights issue of today.

Where: St. Theresa Church (455 N. Benton, Palatine)

All are invited to be part of this special event. (Prayer Service will last about 10 minutes)

Sponsored by St. Theresa/St. Thomas Respect Life Team
