FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, More than fifty “critters” showed up on our church steps last Sunday at 1:30 pm, for the Blessing of Animals: dogs and cats, birds and fish, turtles, hamsters and giraffes (kidding—no gi-raffes). People sure love their pets! Each owner presenting an animal got an “animal” in return: a pack of Swedish Fish (the candy). We begin including a few photos here, with more to follow next week. You can see the full-color originals on our vestibule bulletin board. Please leave them there until Oct. 23rd, at which time the “owners” can take them as remembrances. Thanks to Carol Nordquist for this kindness! -Father Jerry Jecewiz

DISASTER RELIEF THIS WEEKEND…

This weekend (Oct. 8 & 9) you are encouraged to show solidarity with the victims of the recent earthquakes in Italy. About 300 died and thousands more were injured. Recovery will take years. Our ushers will be holding the baskets at the church doors when you exit. Thank you.

FAMILY MASS CHOIR—AN INVITATION We are ready to start a new year for St. Raphael’s Family Mass Choir and we need your talents. The children and adults working with the choir have done an excellent job over the recent years and have made significant contributions to the liturgical life of St. Raphael’s parish. Children in grades 2 and above who are ready and willing to sing are encouraged to join us. We would also be inter-ested in having any high school students participate. The practices are held one or two Monday’s a month at 7:00PM and the choir will be singing at the monthly Family Masses, Christmas Eve, and other appropriate occasions. Dates and other specific information will follow. The only require-ments are that you attend practice and Mass and behave appropriately. We continue to look for adults who are willing to assist in the singing, who may play a musical instrument or who are will-ing to help with other support functions, such as transportation. If you are interested please fill out this form and return it to the parish rectory, to Sister Christine at the Religious Education Program, Joe Becker or Jan Wnek after Mass. If you have any questions regarding the choir please feel free to call the rectory or call Joe Becker at 718-392-3008 or email Joe at [email protected]. I am interested in being a part of St. Raphael’s Family Mass Choir (Please print clearly) Individual’s Name Telephone Number Email

From Jan, our Music Minister — RE: St. Raphael Choir Our parish choir, which sings at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass and on Christmas Eve, Easter Vigil and other major feast days, has begun rehearsing for the new season on Thursday evening at 7:30 pm in the church. We welcome back all our old members and encourage those members of our parish family who love to sing and have not yet joined to contact our music minister Jan at 718-930-5061 to arrange a short private hearing. Here are several good reasons for joining our church choir: 1.You will no longer be able to complain, "Church is so impersonal--I don't know anyone in my par-ish." 2.Psalm 100 will come to life for you as you "make a joyful noise unto the Lord". 3.Intellectual stimulation--when you make music, you are using both sides of your brain simultane-ously. 4.Serving the Lord--considering all He does for us, it's just a little giving back to Him. 5.Serving others--the congregation really loves it when the choir leads the singing. 6.Every once in a while, you might catch a glimpse of heaven's choir singing along with you. We look forward to hearing from you!

LEFT: Luis Sucuczhanay participated in our “Pray for Vocations” project re-cently. You can too. You volunteer to take home the Blessed Mother statue and/or Mass chal-ice for a week and, as a family, ask God to lead persons to consider the priesthood and religious life in the Catholic Church. Speak with Car-men, Angelina or Ines af-ter Mass for further infor-mation.
