T ’ R First Reading — The L said to Abram: All the families of the earth shall find blessing in you (Genesis 12:1-4a) Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — God has called us to a holy life, not because of our works but according to grace (2 Timothy 1:8b-10). Gospel — Atop a high mountain, Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John (Matthew 17:1-9). Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Talk about chat room dangers with your teen
Online chat rooms are great places for people to connect over shared interests and ideas. But for young children and teenagers who may not be internet-savvy, they’re also a great place for predators to lay groundwork. In a chat room, anyone can be whomever they want — and predators hide behind personas of friends. Talk to your child about online safety rules, such as never agreeing to meet in person and never providing personal and identifying information. Review chats frequently to ensure that your child is engaging in safe conversations.
For more tips on chat room safety, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Exposing the Dangers of Internet Chat
Rooms” at: https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/printarticle.cfm?a=280&theme=0
Nature and human nature—plagues and wars—turned late medieval Rome into a living hell, particularly for the sick and poor. Frances, by birth and marriage well provided for, was a devoted wife and mother; but like Benedictine Oblates, who to this day “pray and work” while living with their families and working in the world, she joined like-minded laywomen friends in ministering to society’s most vulnerable. Frances’ charity was not only “hands on” but “in home.” Her palace became a hospital after the plague claimed two of her three children. When her husband’s death ended their loving marriage of forty years, Frances joined other widowed Oblates in community. In an interesting link to the United States, our nation’s premier religious congregation for women of color, the Oblate Sisters of Providence, in 1833 established bonds of spiritual communion with these Oblates of Saint Frances in Rome.

P D W . Let us show proper reverence for the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament by remembering to dress respectfully. Going to mass is a special occasion, not just any ordinary event. Dressing respectfully for Mass reminds us that we are about to encounter our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and this is a special occasion.

A L A You are reminded to use common sense in your participation at Mass and the reception of Holy Communion during the annual cold and flu season, and especially the current outbreak of the coronavirus. If you are feeling ill or think you may have been exposed to a virus, you should refrain from offering your hand to others at the sign of peace or during the recitation of the Lord’s prayer. A smile and a heartfelt, "Peace be with you," should suffice. During the recitation of the Lord’s prayer, you are invited to assume the Orans position. That is the raising of the hands and eyes toward heaven as a gesture acknowledging our sole reliance on God. Likewise, if you are not comfortable in receiving Holy Communion on the tongue or from the communal chalice for fear of infection, you should feel no pressure to do so. We understand that some will refrain from participation in the liturgy or the sign of peace and the communal chalice out of care for our well-being and not out of unkindness or a lack of piety.
For further clarification please contact Sr. Rosanne Belpedio, CSJ at the Office for Worship
of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles email at [email protected]

Thank you for your generous service in our Archdiocese. All priests, employees and volunteers are required to complete re-certification training in a Safe Environment program every four years. Please drop off a copy of your current certificate to the Office; if your certificate had expired, it is your obligation to find the soonest scheduled class to take it and comply with this utmost urgent matter. We are under very strict scrutiny to comply with the archdiocesan policies adopted under the Charter for the Protection of Minors established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and its annual compliance audit.
Classes are offered continually at various parishes on a rotating basis
(visit www.virtusonline.org).
