Middle and High School CCE Event

An Evening with

Taylor Tripodi

Ash Wednesday, February 26

St. Philip is very excited to offer this evening of praise and worship to our youth. Our students are welcome to bring friends to this CCE event. Ashes will be distributed to the youth in attendance at the end of the program.

Parking is very limited due to AUMC having their own Ash Wednesday event. Parents, please plan to drop-off and pick-up your middle/high school stu-dents for this event. If you need help with a ride, contact Becky Pursell at 713-516-7376.

With a Heart full of music...

Taylor Tripodi from Cleveland, OH is on a mission to put people in an encounter with Christ through true, good, and beautiful music. After serving the Church for 2 years as a youth minister, her desire to bring hope to broken,

hurting souls has led her to become a full-time musician, singer-songwriter, and worship leader.

Taylor's music and ministry have led her all around the world, most recently leading worship in the Holy

Land in Israel. This past year she was named one of the top 30 Catholic artists in the world and her newest EP 'Awakening' released in August 2019 just hit over 500k streams on Spotify. In her spare time, she writes blogs for Ascension Press and enjoys spending time with her 8 younger siblings and big, Italian family. Check out Taylor’s music on Spotify or watch her music videos on YouTube.

We will see you at St. Philip in Huffman very soon!

My dear parishioners, since the Imelda storm, we’ve reached out to every registered parish household in different ways. Every time you talk about St. Philip to others in a positive way, you are keeping us alive. Here is a sneak-preview of our CCE wing showing our bright future at our St. Philip home.

I extend my deepest thanks for your generous Sunday offerings and flood donations to St. Philip in 2019! May I now reach out to you with this short appeal message? By all means take ad-vantage of the Bishop’s kindness and continue to donate generously to our flood recovery!

Will you consider adding $10 dollars more each Sun-day to the offering basket to help St Philip parish pay

its bills this year? We need your help to “break even” so to speak, cover our operating expenses and avoid drawing down our small savings ac-count. In the meantime, as with Harvey, we will work very hard to bring all our scattered parish families back home.

As I pray before God, I intend to lead our parish through these difficult challenges to a safe place. Please be am-bassadors for St. Philip everywhere in the Atascocita, Kingwood area. Tell everyone that we are returning to our campus on March 28-29 weekend and that we have a future!

Your weekly $10 more truly will be a turbo-boost! With all our households pitching in, we’re going to make it! Thank you! Grace and peace and blessings be upon you always in the Lord’s name.

We are all anticipating with excitement the end of

March when we will be returning to our St. Philip

campus. Just picture entering our worship area and

going to your “favorite” pew. Take a deep breath and

make your first Sign of the Cross in our newly renovat-

ed Church!

How special it will be to once again serve our Lord at

St. Philip the Apostle. The sanctuary, pews, vestibule,

classrooms, restrooms, and parish office will be once

again like new. We are grateful, and we appreciate the

hard work by Fr. Barker, the work contractors, and the

Diocese of Galveston-Houston for all of their support.

At AUMC Vigil Masses, we all became reacquainted

with our fellow parishioners who attend different

Masses. When we return to St. Philip, please make

efforts to attend other Mass times to continue this spe-

cial blessing of fellowship with other parishioners.

Thanks to our St. Philip choir, ushers, and liturgical

ministers for your faithful ministry, as well as for the

generosity of Atascocita United Methodist Church in

the past few months.

Note: Liturgical Ministers

When we return to our Church campus, you must se-

lect your desired Mass time on the online or App Minis-

try Scheduler Pro in order to be scheduled. Instructions

and more information are included in this Spirit and

Ash Wednesday Ashes

Question: Why do we place ashes on our forehead each Ash Wednesday?

Answer: Ashes are rich in spiritual symbolism. We recall in the second chapter of Genesis, when the human person is fashioned “out of the dust of the ground” and receives the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). In death, a person returns to the ground from which we came. The ancient Hebrews used ashes as a sign of repentance, reminding them-selves that God is God and we are not. As the minister places ashes on our forehead, we hear either “remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return” or “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” When we receive ashes, we remember our own mortality. We’re reminded that we have limited time on this earth and we ought to make the best use of it that we can! People are in need of love, care, and compassion. We all need to continually rediscover the love of God. The Gospel invites every person in every stage of life to encounter and imitate Jesus here and now. The forty days of Lent are the perfect time to assess our own awareness of these realities. ©LPi

Question: I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but I'm not sure what is classified as meat. Does meat include chicken and dairy products?

Explanation: Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs --- all of which live on land. Birds are al-so considered meat.

Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have tradi-tionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste).

Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and fresh-water species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.

(Continued on page 9)

One day, my son was ex-plaining to his mother that he felt she had lied to him. It was nothing very im-portant, but he wanted to take this opportunity to share how important telling the truth is to him. He ex-plained that he simply tells it like it is in all aspects of his life. But an hour later, we caught him in a lie! Again, it was not about a matter of life and death, but it was a lie. When confronted with his own previous words on how important the telling the truth was to him, he just smiled. Yes, the guilty often have no words of defense.

Jesus said it best in Matthew 5: “Let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ mean ‘no.’” He was warning his dis-

ciples about false oaths and then instructing them on the fullness of the Hebrew laws. We may try to do what we say and say what we mean, but it can be all too easy to fall short. We call ourselves disciples yet provide evi-dence to the contrary by our actions (or lack of them).

Even if we feel that we have lied to no one, we may have lied to ourselves. We portray ourselves as gener-ous, thankful, and loving people, yet fail to answer God’s call in a situation because we perceive the cost to be too great. Jesus did not simply mean for his message to be about two words. He also meant that when you say you are a disciple, make sure you are a disciple as well.

An Ash Wednesday Prayer

"Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust." You remind us today, oh Lord, of our origin and end. In the beginning, You fashioned us in the Garden. You dignified dust with the Breath of Life. You made us in Your image and likeness. You led Your people through the dust of the Sinai wilderness to the Promised Land. You overcame temptation in the dry desert. You healed the blind with dirt and clay. Three times Your body stirred the dust as you fell on the road to Calvary. Hear the cry of Your people! One day we will return to dust. This Lenten season, stir our minds to contemplate You, our hearts to love You, and our bodies to serve You in our brothers and sisters. May our prayer, fasting, and almsgiving be Your breath alive in us. Amen.

Join the Knights of Columbus 9794

We invite all Catholic gentlemen of St Philips, 18 years of age and older, who are practicing Catholics, in good standing with the Holy See, and adhere to the Profession of Faith, to submit an application for our Council 9794. A few of our brothers re-cently shared why they became a Knight.

Why I became a Knight.

“I knew many of the Knights at St. Philip and respected how they were so active in many of our ministries. I want-ed to be more engaged in charity events. Whether classic rib or chili sales, or Lenten fish fry dinners, it was uplifting to see the Knights always working together, knowing that sale proceeds were to be directed to charitable giving. The late James McCullough invited me to join “online” after a KofC-sponsored Rosary at The Overlook. That was the time for my “YES.”

“I was new to the area and figured it to be a great way to meet good people with a common interest. My dad was a knight for all of my life.” “I joined the Knights of Columbus because it is a worth-while organization. I believe in the beatitudes; I believe in feeding the hungry clothing the naked; I believe in helping the community; and the charitable work. I like the ethics and I believe the knights are a worthy organization. They do much for the community and the parish that they are associated with. I believe in the strong stand against abor-tion and helping the youth of the community.”

Gary Aldrich, Grand Knight, is happy to talk with you and an-swer any questions you may have; call him at (832) 586-9430.
