These agencies touch the lives of more than 100 million brothers and sisters all over the world annually.
St. Peter's Parish is hoping to form a "Respect Life" group in order to coordinate our parish Pro-life efforts and collaborate with other Respect Life parish groups around the Diocese. FROM THE PASTOR Praised be Jesus Christ!
The fifth Precept of the Church is: You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church
I think when people read the fifth precept, they tend to translate it in their head into something like: “You shall put money in the collection basket when it is passed around,” or “You shall help your local parish pay its bills.”
Now it is certainly true that in our American parish system we are heavily reliant on the generous, voluntary contributions of our parishioners in order to pay our day-to-day bills, maintain our buildings, and pay our wages. And every time I speak or write about money at the parish level, I always want to acknowledge and thank YOU, the parishioners, for your regular and generous financial support.
So there is an important sense in which we cannot do our parish work without that steady collection revenue. But I would like to expand on this notion in a few ways:
1. When we look to the Scriptures it is very clear, particularly in the Old Testament, that the monetary contributions of the faithful are directed first of all to the worship of God. The concept of a Scriptural “tithe” (contributing 10% of one’s income) is based on the conviction that this money, or it’s equivalent in crops or livestock, is ultimately surrendered back to God in an act of oblation and worship.
This direct connection between one’s offering and the worship of God would have been very clear. Imagine choosing the best animal out of one’s flock and bringing it to the temple to be sacrificed. That act necessarily involved a serious detachment from material wealth, as well as a profound trust that all that we have and all that we are comes from God, at every moment. He alone can truly provide for our needs and he is never outdone in generosity.
It also would have highlighted the fact that our material contributions are not about something that we do for God, but rather something that God commands because it redounds to our own benefit. We have a need to worship God. We have a spiritual need to grow in trust of him and spiritual “surrender” to his providential care for us.
In the era of the Church, the sacrifices of the Old Law have reached their fulfillment in the one perfect sacrifice of Christ which is renewed daily in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. And it is primarily in the Mass that our material contributions to the Church reach their “goal.”
We give to the Church fundamentally for two reasons, and two reasons only: a) the worship of God, and b) the salvation of souls (our own soul, and those of others)! Please be generous in your weekly contributions with this fact in mind.
2. Our obligations in voluntary giving go beyond the parish level. This is a point I try to touch on during our annual CMA campaign. The Divinely instituted structure of the Church is such that every Catholic parish is fundamentally tied to a larger Diocesan unit, through which it also maintains its communion with the Church universal with the Pope as the visible principle of that worldwide union.
Staying conscious of the universal (i.e. “catholic”) character of the Church actually helps to keep us from an unhealthy parochialism. It is a wonderful thing that we are united in the same faith, sacraments, and structure of governance with other Catholics on every continent, with vastly different material and spiritual needs. We can pray for and support the Church’s missionary efforts in places where going to Mass and receiving the sacraments is quite literally a danger to one’s life. In turn, those Catholics can pray for us that we do not succumb to the secularism and faithlessness of the “free” society in which we live.
3. Parishioners also contribute to the material needs of the Church by volunteering their time and their competencies. Back in the day, one would hear stories of poor immigrant communities who came to the United States and literally built their parish churches brick by brick, stone by stone, through the voluntary labors of the parishioners. Although we aren’t physically building churches today, our parishioners certainly are helping to keep them maintained, and our volunteers are running and staffing the spiritual, educational and charitable outreach that characterizes parish life. I thought about listing right here some of the many examples of this in our own parish in just the last three weeks or so, but I realized that the list would be remarkably long, and I was fearful of accidentally leaving someone out! Thank you for all that you do.
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary, Father Peter Van Lieshout
