It's May, and that Means Our
Philadelphia Legends Concert!
Since the first choral sounds heard on September 4, 1761, and thefirst organ sounds resounding three years later, St. Peter’s Church,Philadelphia, has had a continuous tradition of great church music.
We celebrate this tradition at 7:00 pm on May 18 with a PhiladelphiaLegends concert. The music will range from a hymn by a parishioner whosigned the Declaration of Independence to works by living Philadelphiacomposers.
The St. Peter’s Choir, with over seventy boys, girls, and adults, both vol-unteer and professional, will sing anthems by federal period Philadelphiamusician Benjamin Carr as well as contemporary works by DanielShapiro, Robert A.M. Ross, James MacMillan, Debra Scroggins, and CarlWiltse. The choir regularly commissions and premieres new anthems andpsalm settings, including recent pieces by Debra Scroggins and BarryRose. During their most recent cathedral residency (Christ Church,Oxford), they were hailed by the cathedral staff as the best visiting choir inmemory. The education of child choristers to high standards is an impor-tant part of ministry at St. Peter’s, and the children will be participating inthis concert.

Growing up, I played three sports each year: soccer in the fall,basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring to summer.I loved all three and watched the professional equivalents on
television (in sports speak I was a “4 for 4” fan), but my true lovewas baseball. The intensity in that split second decision-making ofwhat pitch to throw, shifting fielders with a pitch, whether to swingor not, all resembled numerous chess moves happening simultane-ously. And loving the Phillies, for better or worse, I found myselfcheering them on at home on Sunday afternoons each season.Their 1993 season is memorable for their trek to the World Series.But to me, the interesting facet of that team was their turnaroundfrom last place (1992) to first place (1993). A few key player addi-tions (notably the platoons in right and left field), a unified club-house and career years by many players on the team propelled the1993 Phillies into Philly sports legacy.
For a while, Chapter members suggested to me that the Chaptervisit Longwood Gardens and have an event around the restoredorgan (completed in January 2011). After exploring the possibilitiesfor a few years, this season an amazing convergence occurred, ofwhich we are the beneficiaries. On June 3rd, Longwood Gardensis graciously opening the Ballroom to us, free of charge, for our endof the year Annual Dinner and Meeting. I should rewrite thatphrase. Free of charge!
Peter Richard Conte, Longwood organist and PhiladelphiaChapter Member, is available that evening and will be performing a30 minute program for us. And Marva Dawn is available and flyingin from Seattle to speak at both the dinner and at a Clergy-Musicianevent the prior day. A truly amazing convergence!

National headquarters continues to
move ahead with ONCARD, a new
way of organizing our membership.
The biggest change in this new system is that AGO national head-
quarters will now be collecting annual dues. For those of you with
email, hopefully you've received an message from ONCARD invit-
ing you to log in and update your personal information. You'll be
receiving another email shortly to renew your membership for 2014-
2015. This can be done easily online with a credit card; it is also
possible to pay by check, but please be sure to send your check to
the national address rather than to one of our local officers.
For those of you without email, there's nothing to worry about! You'll
be receiving/sending your membership renewal form directly from/to
national headquarters. I imagine this form will look nearly identical
to forms used in the past.
Whether you renew online with ONCARD or by mail, you'll still have
similar membership options specific to our chapter - our substitute
list, the option to receive the Crescendo electronically or by paper,
and options to donate to our chapter funds. Your check will be sent
to national headquarters, who will distribute your donations to us in
Philadelphia.
I've found ONCARD to be fairly easy to use. For those of you who
are less familiar with computers, please feel free to call me for help.
In the long run, this is a great move for the AGO and will save the
guild a lot of work.

Organ works on the magnificent E.M. Skinner Opus862 instrument will include Bruhn’s Praeludium in EMinor and Tournemire’s Improvisation on the TeDeum, played by Artist–in–Residence Paula PughRomanaux.
The music ministry at St.Peter’s has been led by a hus-band/wife team since 2004.Peter Hopkins is Director ofMusic Ministry andChoirmaster, responsible forchoral direction, liturgical plan-ning, and administration. AsArtist in Residence andPrincipal Organist, Paula PughRomanaux plays for most ser-vices and accompanies thechoirs, presents recitals, andassists with the education ofgirl and boy choristers. Peter and Paula occasionallyswitch roles, “just to keep the people guessing.” Paulaalso maintains a small, selective piano studio, whereall the students are introduced to the organ andencouraged to add organ to their studies.
E.M. Skinner Opus 862 is one of the finest examplesof Skinner’s art extant. 45 ranks over three manualsand pedal, the organ is under the curatorship of theThompson–Allen Company, who over the pasttwenty–odd years have skillfully and lovingly broughtthe instrument back to Skinner’s original specificationsand voicing. Paula Romanaux will also play a “periodpiece” from Skinner’s time to show many of the colorsof the organ. The organ is triply historic: A 1930 E.M.Skinner housed in a case with façade of Philip Feyringfrom 1764 in a church that opened in 1761!
The music ministry at St. Peter’s Church is not justhistorically interesting, but thriving today, withever–growing numbers of participants of all ages mak-ing music skillfully and joyfully to the glory of God.

St. Peter’sis at the corner of Third & Pine, on the border of theSociety Hill and Queen Village neighborhoods. Come early if you wish, park in thechurch lot, and enjoy dinner at one of the manyrestaurants within walking distance. Church of the Loving ShepherdS. New Street in West ChesterHost Musician: Kathleen Scheide
Our Noontime Concert Series will travel for thefirst time to the Church of the Loving Shepherdat Bournelyf, West Chester, for May events.
Leah Martin, William Gatens, Bruce Glenny andKathleen Scheide will present the 2-manual trackerorgan by Darron Wissinger, New Hampshire. Theinstrument sits in a converted 1740 stone barn. Theplaster-over-stone walls, black walnut floors, andexpansive cubic airspace create a warm acousticthat is appreciated for frequent chamber music offer-ings in the church's chamber music concert seriesas well as during services. In May everyone has achance to also experience solo organ music in thisunique setting.
A reception will follow each program. Audiencemembers are additionally invited to bring a lunch toenjoy before or after each program on the 20-acregrounds (Bournelyf), by the pond, labyrinth or butter-fly garden.
