BAPTISMS Dates and times are announced at the baptismal class. Parents of children to be baptized must attend two classes of prepara-tion. Godparents need only attend the first class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received Confirmation. The classes take place on the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm in English in the Old Church. If you do not live in this parish, you must obtain a letter of permission from your own parish to baptize your child at St. Peter Chanel. SUFFERING: DOES IT EMBTITTER YOU OR SANCTIFY YOU?

Human suffering, still-born births, tragic fatal accidents, terrorism attacks and loss of the innocent, children suffering and dying due to malnutrition (thousands every day), healthy, dynamic, intelligent persons suffering from Parkinson's and Alzheimer's and sometimes both at the same time - is there any meaning to this human predicament called "Suffering?" In and of itself, suffering is neutral - meaning, that it has neither positive nor negative moral value! However, if one understands suffering in the light of the life of Jesus, especially in the light of His Passion, suffering and death on the cross that first Good Friday, then indeed suffering has not only value, but infinite value! However, the key is this! Our suffering must be united to the suffering and death of Jesus. How true the pithy saying: "Suffering either makes you better or bitter!" If your suffering is united to Jesus' suffering on the cross and connected sacramentally to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, then you indeed have discovered the key to holiness, the secret of the saints! In sum, suffering sanctifies or crushes us. If we unite our cross to the cross of Christ and invite Him to help us to carry our cross then every step we walk with Jesus we become more holy! What then are some positive fruits that blossom in our souls by suffering in union with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? 1. PRAYER GROWTH! Suffering often forces us to our knees for the simple reason that we become keenly aware of how fragile and weak we are and how very little we can do of our own accord! How true the saying: "No atheists in foxholes!" 2. HUMILITY. Once again, in suffering our forces are depleted - often physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Therefore, we must rely on God's strength. "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth." 3. COMPASSION. If you have suffered intensely, excruciating pains and someone approaches you with similar pain, and then you can commiserate and have compassion on him/her, having gone through a similar dolorous plight. For example, a woman who has suffered through and survived "Breast-cancer" can certainly shed tears with a friend who reveals to her the detection of the “Spot on the breast". Compassion! What a beautiful virtue that means a willingness to suffer with others. Fr Bruno Lanteri affirmed that the suffering sinners should come to the priest who should be willing to shed and share and unite tears together! Archbishop Fulton Sheen defines the priest as "The victim who offers the Victim!" 4. PATIENCE. Suffering is hard, draining, depleting, but if accepted willingly and united to Jesus, then the beautiful - all so necessary virtue - that of patience is acquired. How important! Jesus said that by your patience you will save your souls! 5. SAVE SOULS! Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Lourdes both exhorted the world to pray but also to offer up sacrifices. Suffering and sacrifice are synonymous! By suffering with supernatural motives for love of God and for the salvation of souls, we can actually collaborate with the Lord in saving immortal souls for all eternity.

Lenten prayers and devotions Here are ways to boost your spiritual life during Lent:

10 tips for making the season more meaningful 1. Begin each morning with the prayer: “Lord, I offer you this day, and all that I think, and do, and say.” 2. Attend Daily Mass as often as possible. 3. Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. 4. Make the Stations of the Cross at home or at the parish 5. Read Scripture for 10 minutes every day. 6. Pray the Seven Penitential Psalms (6, 31, 50, 101, 129, 142) 7. Spend some time in quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. 8. Abstain from meat for an extra day or two each week. 9. Listen to CDs of spiritual music or a spiritual speaker. 10. Keep a Lenten journal with your spiritual insights, special intentions, people you want to pray for, hurts and disappoint-ments that you want to offer up, and progress reports on your Lenten resolutions.

Lenten Spiritual Retreat Our Lenten Spiritual Retreat will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2012. Pre-registration is mandatory whether you wish to partake of the meals or not. To register you may pick up a form in the church or in the parish office. Registration deadline is February 25. NOTE: A Fee of $25.00 will be charged for late and same day registration.

Lenten Instructions The Catholic Code of Canon Law requires:

1.1.1. The days of fast and abstinence are Ash Wednesday & Ash Wednesday & Ash Wednesday & Good Friday.Good Friday.Good Friday.

2. All other Fridays All other Fridays All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.

The obligation to fast applies to Catholics between the ages of 18-59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day, and two smaller meals that together do not equal one full meal.

The obligation to abstain applies to Catholics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to not eat meat or meat products (chicken is considered meat).

The obligation to fast and abstain, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them without good cause, would be considered a grave matter.

Lent is not just about fasting, however, prayer, almsgiving and works of charity have always been encouraged by the church. Walking the Stations of the Cross (also called the Way of the Cross or Via Crucis) is a Lenten devotion that dates back to the fourth century.

¿SUFRIMIENTO: TE AMARGA O TE SANTIFICA? Los sufrimientos humanos, niños nacido prematuros, trágicos accidentes mortales, ataques de terrorismo y pérdida de los inocentes, niños sufriendo y muriendo debido a la malnutrición (miles cada día), personas saludables, dinámicas e inteligentes, que padecen de la enfermedad de Parkinson y Alzheimer y a veces ambas enfermedades al mismo tiempo-existe algún significado a este predicamento humano, llamado "Sufrimiento?" El sufrimiento es neutral-es decir, que no tiene ningún valor moral, ni positivo ni negativo! Sin embargo, si uno entiende el sufrimiento a la luz de la vida de Jesús, especialmente a la luz de Su pasión, el sufrimiento y la muerte en la Cruz el Primer Viernes Santo , entonces de hecho, el sufrimiento no sólo tiene valor, sino también tiene un valor infinito! Sin embargo, la clave es esto! Nuestro sufrimiento debe ser unido, al sufrimiento y la muerte de Jesús. ¿Cómo este dicho lo dice: "El Sufriendo o te hace mejor o te amarga!" Si, su sufrimiento está unido al sufrimiento de Jesús en la Cruz y conectado sacramentalmente el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa, entonces tu has descubierto la clave para la santidad, el secreto de los santos! En resumen, el sufrimiento santifica o nos aplasta. Si unimos nuestra Cruz, a la Cruz de Cristo y le invitamos a El, que nos ayude a llevar nuestra Cruz, entonces cada paso que caminamos con Jesús nos convertimos en más santos! ¿Cuáles son entonces, algunos frutos positivos que florecen en nuestras almas, por el sufrimiento en unión con Nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo? 1. EL CRECIMIENTO EN LA ORACIÓN! El sufrimiento muchas veces nos forza a doblar nuestras rodillas por la simple razón, que profundamente reconocemos que frágiles y que débiles somos, y que poco podemos hacer por nuestros propios medios! Cómo cierto refrán: "No hay ateos en las trincheras!" 2. HUMILDAD. Una vez más, en el sufrimiento nuestras fuerzas se agotan-a menudo físicamente, emocionalmente e intelectualmente. Por lo tanto, debemos de confiar en la fuerza de Dios. "Nuestra ayuda esta en el nombre del Señor, que hizo el cielo y la tierra". 3. LA COMPASIÓN. Si tú has sufrido intensamente insoportables dolores, y alguien se te acerca con un dolor similar, entonces puedes compadecerte y tener compasión de él o de ella, habiendo pasado por una situación similar dolorosa. Por ejemplo, una mujer que haya sobrevivido y que haya sufrido a través de un "Cáncer de mama", ciertamente puede derramar lágrimas con una amiga que le revela el descubrimiento, de una "Mancha en el pecho". La compasión! Qué hermosa virtud, significa un ardor de sufrir con los demás. Fr. Bruno Lanteri afirmó, que los sufrientes pecadores deben venir al sacerdote, el cuál debería estar dispuesto a derramar, compartir y unir las lagrimas juntos! Arzobispo Fulton Sheen define al sacerdote como "La víctima quien ofrece a la víctima!" 4. LA PACIENCIA. El sufrimiento es duro, consumidor, agotador, pero si es aceptado voluntariamente y unido a Jesús, entonces es bello-también es, una virtud necesaria--la paciencia se adquiere. Que importante! Jesús dijo que por su paciencia ustedes salvarán sus almas! 5. SALVAR ALMAS! Nuestra Señora de Fátima y Nuestra Señora de Lourdes exhortaron al mundo a rezar, pero también a ofrecer sacrificios. El sufrimiento y sacrificio son sinónimos! Sufriendo con motivos sobrenaturales por amor de Dios y por la salvación de las almas, nosotros realmente podemos colaborar con el Señor, para salvar almas inmortales por toda la eternidad.

What Is Lent? Lent is the penitential season of approximately 40 days set aside by the Church in order for the faithful to prepare for the celebra-tion of the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. During this holy season, inextricably connected to the Paschal Mystery, the Catechumens prepare for Christian initiation, and current Church members prepare for Easter by a recalling of Baptism and by works of penance, that is, prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Even in the early Church, Lent was the season for prayerful and penitential preparation for the feast of Easter. Though the obliga-tion of penance was originally only imposed on those who had committed public sins and crimes, by medieval times all the faith-ful voluntarily performed acts of penance to repair for their sins. Ash Wednesday is the clarion call to “Repent and believe the gospel” (Mk 1:15). For the next forty days, the faithful willingly submit to fasting and self-denial in imitation of Our Lord’s forty-day fast in the desert. It is in these dark and still nights, these desert-times, that the soul experiences its greatest growth. There, in the inner arena, the soul battles the world, the flesh and the devil just as Our Lord battled Satan's triple temptation in the desert. His battle was external, for Jesus could not sin; our battle is interior, but with a hope sustained by the knowledge of Christ’s Easter victory over sin and death. His victory is our renewal, our “spring” — which is the meaning of the Anglo-Saxon word,“lengten” or Lent. In this penitential season we have the opportunity to make an annual spiritual “tune-up”, a 40-day retreat with Our Lord. Have we allowed worldly cares and the “daily drama” to obscure our call to holiness? Have self-love and materialism eroded our relationship with God? Then let us renew our efforts, and through our Lenten ob-servance, discipline the body and master it as we “follow in the footsteps of the poor and crucified Christ” (St. Francis of Assisi).

Lent: A Two-Fold Theme: Baptism and Penance In the ancient church, the sacrament of Baptism was usually per-formed once a year at Easter. Only adults who were educated in the Catholic Faith were baptized. No one could be baptized until they had learned the catechism. When a person had a sufficient grasp of the Faith, he/she was put forth as a candidate, or "catechumen." Final examinations or "scrutinies" were given to these catechumens 40 days before Easter to decide who was ready to be baptized at Easter. Lent was originally a time of final preparation for the reception of the sacrament of Baptism at the Easter Vigil. Infant Baptism was rare until the beginning of the 15th century. But it was always regarded as valid & as an apostolic institution, as we know from Irenaeus, Origen & St. Cyprian. Sponsors at the Baptism of children are mentioned as early as A.D. 200 by Tertullian. The focus on our baptismal vows and the participation in volun-tary acts of penance during Lent, as practiced by the early Church, needs to be recaptured. Vatican II, as stated through Sacrosanctum Concilium (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy), urges this return to this original spirit of Lent: The two elements which are especially characteristic of Lent—(1) the recalling of baptism or the preparation for it, & (2) penance—should be given greater emphasis in the liturgy and in liturgical catechesis. It is by means of them that the Church prepared the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear God's word more frequently & devote more time to prayer. During Lent, penance should be not only be internal & individual but also external & social. The practice of penance should be encouraged in ways suited to the present day, to different regions, & to individual circumstances. (109, 110)

Practica Cuaresmal Los Católicos están invitados a participar en la liturgia Eurasiá-tica y el sacramento de la penitencia durante la Cuaresma, y las parroquias están invitados a proveer oportunidades regulares y frecuentes para esta participación. También se sugieren las devociones como las Estaciones de la Cruz, vigilia y oraciones (con Bendición del Santísimo Sacramento, si es oportuno). Practicas tradicionales – incluyendo el aumento en oración, lecturas de la Escritura y espirituales, limosnas, la negación personal de comida y bebida, aumento en el cuidado y el servi-cio al enfermo y necesitado – también son sugeridos.

Lenten Observance Catholics are encouraged to participate in the Eucharistic litur-gy and in the sacrament of penance during Lent, and parishes are encouraged to provide regular and frequent opportunities for such participation. Likewise encouraged are devotions such as Stations of the Cross, vigils and prayer services (with Bene-diction of the Blessed Sacrament, if opportune). Traditional practices - including increased prayer, Scripture and spiritual reading, alms, personal self-denial in food and drink, increased care and service to the sick and needy - are also suggested.

Penance and Reconciliation In this penitential season of Lent, the Christian faithful are obliged, & encouraged, to confess sacramentally all serious sins not previously acknowledged in individual confession. Pastors & parishes are encouraged to make available commu-nal celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation, to empha-size the social and ecclesial aspects of sin & reconciliations.

Penitencia y Reconciliación En esta temporada penitencial de la Cuaresma, los Cristianos están obligados, e invitados, a confesar sacramentalmente to-dos los pecados serios que no han sido ya confesados en una confesión individual. Pastores y parroquias están invitados a hacer disponible celebraciones comunales del sacramento de la reconciliación, para acentuar el aspecto social y eclesial del pecado y la reconciliación.
