Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus

Letter from the Pastor Emeritus

Dear Members and Friends of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ:

Thank you so very much for such a wonderful day on July 19, 2015. It is truly an honor to

be recognized as Pastor Emeritus of St. Paul’s UCC. Everything about the service of

worship and the fellowship following was very special to me and my family. In my

conversation with others, I know it was special for the guests and for the members of St.

Paul’s. The hospitality was warmly felt, and all felt very welcome.

I am grateful to Pastor Donna for all she put into planning and conducting the service, to the

members making presentations, for all the special music, for the generous gifts, for the

wonderful meal furnished by the church and served by the Church Council, for all those in

attendance, for the warm expressions of love and good wishes, and especially for the love of

God that you shared with me, my family, and all in attendance.

At some point in the future, with your permission, I would like for the plaque recognizing

me as Pastor Emeritus to find a permanent home in the church, perhaps in the display case or

hanging on a wall.

In closing, I want you to know how “grace-full” I feel you all are. We all love St. Paul’s

United Church of Christ. There are wonderful years ahead for our church as we service God

and do God’s will.

In Christian Love,

Rev. Donald Deeker

Pastor Emeritus

TID BITS

A Fun Experiment to determine the

temperature if you don’t have a

thermometer—The frequency of a

cricket’s chirps fluctuates with the

temperature, so if you count a cricket’s

chirps for 15 seconds and add 37, you

will have the approximate

outdoor temperature.

The first bathing suit for women was created in the 1800s. It was long-sleeved with woolen bloomers.

In 1827 the first swimming school opened in the U.S., in Boston, MA.

John Quincy Adams and John James Audubon were students of this

school!

On Aug. 2, 1858 the first mail-

boxes were put up in the U.S., in

Boston, MA and New York, NY.

A queen bee lays

1500 eggs a day!

Sharks are one of the oldest living creatures in the sea. There is evidence that sharks have been around for more than 400 million years. Today’s sharks are much smaller than those from the dinosaur era. Sharks from the dino-age measured up to 80 feet long; today’s largest shark, the Great White, grows to lengths of only 25 feet.

France’s Eiffel Tower

grows by more than 6

inches in summer due

to the expansion of the

iron on hot days.

July is National Ice Cream

Month. On average, U.S.

citizens consume about 5.5

gallons of ice cream per year.

Watermelon is the summer’s favorite

vegetable. Yes, vegetable—not fruit.

It is a member of the cucumber,

pumpkin, and squash family. This

juicy favorite is 92% water, and the

average American eats 15 pounds of

watermelon a year.

August is the

busiest month for

travel and tourism.

Mosquitos, summer’s pest,

have been around for more

than 30 million years.

In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson invented the first Popsicle, completely by accident. He accidentally left a mixture of powdered soda and water, with a stirring stick, on his porch. He awoke the next morning and found a frozen pop! He first named his creation “Epsicle,” but when he got older, his kids asked for “Pop’s” sicle and the new name was born. Popsicles are more pop- ular than ever today, with Cherry being the number one favorite.

Baseball, which kicks

off in the spring, is the

popular sport through-

out the summer months.

Hi, Ho! Hi, Ho! It’s off to School We Go…

“Early bird” suggestion: School supplies are at

unbeatable prices right now. Every year we do a mission

project called Operation Christmas Child. The boxes arrive

in early November. With school supplies at such low costs

right now, it might be worth the savings to pick some of

those items up to pack in your boxes.
