From the Dean’s Desk
Dear Friends in Christ,
Last week the Gospel [Matthew 13:1-23] we hear of Jesus comparing the Kingdom of Heaven to the work of the sower, who
randomly scatters the seed over the countryside, into four distinguishable types of soil: the hard, impenetrable soil at the side
of the road; the soil with shallow depth; the soil that is overrun by thorns and the rich soil that produces a good harvest.
Jesus here emphasises not only the effectiveness of God’s word but also the ways in which that word can be either accepted
(rich soil) or struggle to survive (first three types of soils).
Today’s Gospel [Matthew 13:24-43] speaks again in agricultural terms and images. In fact, it consists of three separate parables about the
Kingdom: the wheat and the weeds (13:24-30) with its explanation (vv 36-43); the parable of the mustard seed (vv 31-32) and the parable of the
yeast (v. 33). Verses 34-35 tell us why Jesus speaks to the people in parables, which reflects an earlier passage with the same theme (vv 10-
17).
Within the context of today’s liturgy, the theme that resonates is not so much the characteristics or features of the Kingdom but rather the
workings of God, especially the traits of mercy and justice. The first reading [Wisdom 12:13.16-19] beautifully describes God, as one ‘who cares
for everything’. This care is seen in the patient tolerance of God as the author states that God’s ‘justice has its source in strength’ and that
God ‘governs us with great patience’ giving us ‘the good hope that after sin you will grant repentance’. This is then carried through in the
Gospel parable about the wheat and the weeds. Here the sower of good seed is informed that an enemy has sown darnel into his field, a seed
which has all the similarities of wheat but is in effect a weed. Its presence amid the wheat can greatly deteriorate the value and worth of the
wheat. In answer to the request to weed out the darnel, the sower insists that since the weeding could injure the wheat, both should be allowed
to grow until harvest time, when the separation will occur.
When we view Jesus’ interpretation of this parable (vv 36-43) we can see that it holds the theme of final judgement. Taken from this perspective,
the parable speaks to us about God’s patient tolerance with the presence of evil within the world. The parable states that God permits evil to
exist alongside the good; but that the wicked and evil are eventually separated, judged and destroyed, while the righteous are gathered together,
rewarded and brought into the presence of God. This explanation finds further foundation in Matthew’s section which deals with the final
judgement and the coming of the Son of Man [25:31-46] where the very works of the just and unjust brings upon each their ultimate reward or
punishment.
Today’s Gospel can become a means for us to meditate on the presence of evil within our world and how such evil can co-exist with good. The
parable suggests that each of the characters has a turn in taking the upper hand. The enemy sows the weed while the world is asleep (vv. 24-
28a), but it is the wheat that survives despite the presence of the darnel (vv 28b-30a). In the end, it is the sower/farmer (God) who harvests the
crop, destroys the weeds and salvages the wheat (vv 30b). This Gospel should instil in us not only to abide by God’s patient tolerance, but also
to have hope even in the presence of evil within our world. Today’s first reading reminds us that God’s “justice has its source in
strength” (Wisdom 12:13). It is indeed difficult to remain patient in the face of evil. This response is but the first step. Our patient tolerance
allows us to consider the means by which we can counteract the presence of evil with good and not to let our emotions and human responses
blind our judgement. In all this we need to consider God’s characteristics and ways of dealing with human events. May we live by the words of
today’s Psalm: “You, God, are a God of mercy and compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love and truth.” (Ps 85:15-16).
