Combine 75 people, lots of green clothing, some truly original costumes, a ton of corned beef & cab-bage, and live entertainment by The Sock Monkeys, and of course some beer … what’s not to like?

John Leary, Andrea Steierman, Jill & Craig Baker and their committee of volunteers put on terri-fic party.

Club member David Ross and The Sock Monkeys (www.thesockmonkeys.com) had everybody up on the dance floor shaking in a decidedly non-Irish fashion!

The boat trip that Diane and I took from Annapo-lis to Mount Vernon last Saturday was magnificent — mainly because of what was missing.

First of all, there was no wind. When we rounded the bend from the South River into the Chesapeake Bay at 0645, the water was as calm as I have ever seen it. I wanted to let La Rea stretch her sea legs af-ter her long winter’s nap, so we cruised at 36 mph all the way from Annapolis to Point Lookout. It was glori-ous. And when the wind finally did start picking up later in the morning, it was at our back to give us a nice little push home.

There was also no traffic, unless you count con-tainer ships and a couple lonely tug boats. Of course, there’s a reason the Bay was deserted: the air tem-perature was below freezing at 0630 when Diane was using my driver’s license to scrape ice off the wind-

shield. We ran a portable heater in the cockpit all morning to keep the captain and first mate from get-ting too chilly. Still, I spent the morning wearing that grin that boaters get when they have the water all to themselves.

There was no floating debris, which was a nice surprise. Last March, MVYC’s marina was chock full of logs, stumps, boards — even a sheet of plywood un-der Bonnie Breneman’s boat. You could practically walk across the lagoon without getting your feet wet. This year is a different story altogether. In a voyage of some 170 miles, I saw more runaway “no wake” mark-ers (three) than I saw logs. I think Mother Nature is granting us some payback for having endured Hurri-cane Isabel in September. Isabel’s floods scrubbed the riverbanks clean of debris, and now we get rewarded with an early start to boating season.

Lots of other things were missing from this re-markable boat trip. There were no crab pots to dodge, no phone calls from the office, no need to constantly smear ourselves with SPF 50 sun-block cream, and no danger of getting that wacky “raccoon” suntan from wearing dark sunglasses. The trip only had one thing that I wished it didn’t have: an ending.

Luckily, the end of that trip is just the start of a new boating season.

The Stroll by Roy Avery

Norma and I have just walked along the bicycle path to Alexandria and back.

The trail is delightful! It offers gorgeous views of the river, picturesque curves through the trees and neat little bridges over the swamps. It is a treasure that we are fortunate to have right in our own back-yards.

We estimated that bikers and walkers were about equal in number, but at this point in the season, that

isn’t too many. Walkers nearly always speak, but bik-ers usually only manage a bell or a blast of air as they come from behind. Courtesies along the trails include walking on the right, signaling passing before you overtake, and waiting to pass until you have a clear field of vision, usually along the dotted lines. There is a sense of camaraderie along the trail.

Out in the river, we spotted some large trees caught in sand bars. The trail crosses under the Park-way at the Fort Hunt turnoff with lovely views of Fort Washington. It crosses back over at the little Alexan-dria Avenue Bridge, or “the Stone Bridge” as it is popularly known.

The city limit of Alexandria is marked by a nice sign just before you reach the Beltway Bridge, a sign that is hidden from drivers by the trees. Like so many of the other “treasures” along the trail, drivers often miss the best parts. The trip is approximately twenty-two miles, depending on your choice of departure and return spots and is definitely worth the time and ef-fort.

For each segment of our trip, we parked the car where we had ended our previous walk. The stroll must have taken twelve to fourteen days. Surely, you didn’t think we would tackle the entire trip at once, did you?

Spring is upon us, and MVYC has had some very good news in the last few weeks.

The insurance company sent us a check for $13,500 to cover damages and repair costs due to Hur-ricane Isabel. Thanks to Jim Nelson’s Woodlawn Tree Service for his help providing estimates and using his crew to remove the downed trees. Jim also did a lot pruning of the large oak trees in front of the Club-house.

The Yacht Haven Garden Club has graciously do-nated $1250 to create a long-term landscape plan for the Club and to cover the cost of some of the plant-ings. This sizable donation from the Garden Club is sincerely appreciated. We look forward to seeing this plan come into bloom during the year.

April 3rd is Clean-Up Day and, as usual, will start off with a pancake breakfast provided by the Swim Team. The project list is not as long as last year, but we will still need a lot of help. There will be Marina, G r o u n d s a n d House projects, so everyone will have something to do. We hope to see a large turn-out for this annual kickoff event.

At the last two membership meetings, we have discussed the possibility of using electronic communi-cations to supplement and possibly replace some of the Club’s printed notifications and the Beacon. Rest assured that we’ll continue to publish the Beacon in its familiar paper format for all members who wish to receive it. However, the Club could reduce its annual printing and mailing costs if some members were in-terested in receiving e-mail notifications and the Bea-con on the Web site instead of paper documents. We will review the process at the next meeting. Please come and participate in the discussion. If the member-ship approves, we may be able to implement the use of electronic documents this year.

If you have not yet paid your annual dues, please do so as soon as possible. The due date has passed and

late fees should be included. Bart Hewitt has sent re-minders to members who missed the payment dead-line and are now not in good standing. If you are not going to renew your membership, please notify Bart as soon as possible.

Thanks to Marina Chair John Leary, boat slips have been assigned and almost all requests have been

met. We have several smaller slips available. If you are tired of trailer-ing your boat, call John to see what is available. The Clubhouse will be closed dur-ing the week of April 19th in order to refinish the hardwood floors. If you need to get in, please use the front pool entrance and the elevator to reach the second and third floors. The closures are not expected to af-

fect any scheduled social events. The Beer Fairy has now returned from Florida, a

sure sign winter is over and spring is on the way! See you at the membership meeting on April 1st, and Clean-Up Day on April 3rd.

Membership News

Bart Hewitt, Membership

DEADLINES ! Don'tcha hate 'em? Like I'm three lousy days late sending this article to Chris Ruckman, and you can bet he'll be on my case. Feisty fella for somebody so short. [Hey, who’s he calling short? —Editor’s Editor]

And, um ... there's that pesky deadline for paying annual dues and fees. Quite a few folks haven't re-

sponded yet. But I'm sure that by the time you read this, everybody will have answered the mail. Think I said that last month.

But here's EXCELLENT news. We have some su-perb new members! Russ and Katie Magnuson, Nicho-las and Jacqueline Gorski, Greg and Kathy McDer-mott, Christian and Nancy Moscoso, Joseph Wahler and Lynn Levine, Fred Zamer and Lisa Puscheek. Look for them at TGIF’s and other MVYC functions; introduce yourselves and make them welcome!

This month's gaggle of anniversaries is too huge to list everyone. The prize winner for membership lon-gevity is Grayce Shelby (1958), followed by Bob and Hertha Smith (1974), and the Cundari's (1976).

Now, there are deadlines, and there are Dead Lines. Evelyn and I saw one at The Point yesterday. Andy Salko, Jim Gordon and Steve Winkler staring at a Dead Line with a perpetually flaccid bobber. After a while, this youngster walks over, tosses out a yel-low-streamered spinning lure. WHAM - nice bass on the first cast. Bobber still flaccid. Dead Line.

Be sure to give me a call if you need anything. I'll be sending out another round of dues/fees reminders soon, and if you have questions, ring me up at 703-799-0401 or at [email protected]. And don't forget to help out at Spring Cleanup Day on April 3rd. Ruckman will probably be there to help wipe out the pancakes, right before the breakfast deadline.

Katie & Russ Magnuson Katie is President of Results Direct, a Web solu-

tions company in Old Town Alexandria. When not in the office, Katie can be found co-leading daughter Al-exandra's Brownie Troop or shuttling the kids to vari-ous activities and birthday parties. Katie's interests include art, the outdoors & boating. Russ is CEO and Chief Technology Officer at Results Direct. In his spare time (when not fiddling with the family lobster boat or varnishing brightwork), Russ enjoys volunteer-ing in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, playing chess and looking for the latest computer and boating books at Barnes & Noble.

Katie & Russ have two children: Alexandra and Zachary. Alexandra, 7, is in the first grade at Browne Academy in Alexandria. She loves school, arts & crafts, sports and get-togethers with friends. Zachary, 2, spends his time running around the house and yard. He loves sandboxes, cars and things that make noise, as well as visits to the library and Gymboree.

The Magnusons relocated to Alexandria from Tuc-son, AZ in June 2002. Katie grew up outside of Balti-more, while Russ was raised in Minnesota. The family enjoys picnicking & boating together & spending time in Maine in the summer.

New Members: We would love to introduce you by publishing a few paragraphs describing your family. Please contact Marge Skelly ([email protected] or 703-360-8374) or Membership Chair Bart Hewitt ([email protected] or 703-550-6023).

New Member Spotlight

Nick & Jackie Gorski married in May 1976, but didn’t take their honeymoon until July, 1992. That’s because the morning after their wedding, they moved from Connecticut to Virginia where Nick began a jour-nalism career. Jackie commuted between New York and Alexandria while finishing her Masters degree in British Literature. Sixteen years, a career change, a Ph.D. and two children later, they finally arrived in England for their honeymoon.

The Gorskis continued traveling, and have now taken their two girls, Kara & Lauren, to Spain, Gibral-tar, France, Switzerland, Acapulco, Puerto Rico and British Columbia as well as numerous places in the US and Canada. Most recently, they spent the winter vacation in Key West.

Nick is a financial vice president and wealth man-agement advisor, having been with Merrill Lynch since 1981. He looks forward to fresh air, sunshine and re-laxing by the pool. Jackie teaches English at T.C. Wil-liams High School. An Alexandria teacher since 1977, she loves cooking, sailing, walking and reading. Kara, a sophomore at The University of PA, is house man-ager of her Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Lauren, a fash-ion enthusiast, will enter Marymount University this fall on an academic scholarship. Both girls are sailing buffs, and are thrilled to become MVYC members.

Power Fleet News David Miskimens,

Power Fleet Captain

The next Power Fleet event will be the 2004 Brunch Cruise on Sunday, April 25th. We hope to have 3-5 vessels ready to bring our group up the river to Old Town. Please check out the flyer on Page 4.

On a nice day in mid-March, I decided to stop by the Old Town Alexandria docks to visit our friendly dock-master, Deac Heath. It was one of the most per-fect spring days, about 65 degrees, sunny and a slight breeze across the river. I walked past the Torpedo Fac-tory and was surprised to see that A dock is still wrecked from Hurricane Isabel. (I thought back to how MVYC volunteers rebuilt ours in a day). I walked out to the Cherry Blossom paddleboat and Deac was in the office building at the end of the pier (you know, in front of the Chart House Restaurant). We talked about the plans to repair the docks.

Deac said the City of Alexandria is responsible for the repairs, and some of the work (electrical, etc.) will be contracted out. Once the contractor work is done, the City will re-string the pilings and put on the deck-ing. He thought it might be as late as July, and they plan to work on it in May, but Deac wasn’t optimistic about it being done before boating season. Let’s cross our fingers and hope it will be ready for July 4th!

MVYC’s boat safety picnic will be held May 1st this year. We will combine a potluck picnic, with a “marine stuff” swap meet, and vessel safety inspec-tions. Coast Guard Auxiliary members Tom Pojeta

and Norm Mayer have graciously offered their ser-vices again to conduct courtesy marine examinations that Saturday from 1000 -1400.

The next day, May 2nd, is Commissioning Day. We’re hoping to see the power fleet all decked out with flags, lights, and banners. There will be a prize for the best decorated vessel in each category, power and sail!

The PYRCA FLOAT-IN will be held July 16-18, please contact Ed Zebrowski to reserve your spot at this event. Many of you have expressed interest in making this into a five-day cruise weekend. It looks like we may have 8-10 boats cruising together. Don’t worry about your boat’s cruise speed; we will stage departure times so that we all arrive at the same time frame. This will be fun, like a rally.

On Thursday, 15 July, we leave MVYC in the morning and motor to Captain Billy’s near the 301 Bridge for lunch. That afternoon, we will check in at Corinthian Yacht Club, where I have ten slips on hold for Thursday night. Happy hour starts at 5pm, and they are looking forward to having us. We will proba-bly use their BBQ pits for a cookout that night.

Friday and Saturday (16th and 17th) is the PRYCA FLOAT IN at the Crisfield Marina. Contact Ed in April to reserve your slips. This will be a gas!

Sunday, 18 July; After the morning activities, we will leave Crisfield and head for Port Kinsale, VA. We have ten slips on hold there too. They have a new res-taurant at their facility, and it will be open for us that Sunday night.

Monday, 19th: After a “power fleet team” break-fast, we head back to MVYC.

Please let me know if you want to participate in this cruise so that I can get your vessel specifics on the list.

Veteran MVYC Dolphins Take Helm Welcome, John Gullickson and Brooke Sorber! John Gullickson will be the head coach for the

summer 2004 Season. Oh boy is he excited! Swim-ming has always been a huge part of John's life. A swimmer since the age of 4, he has been around the sport a lot. John grew up in the NVSL and DCCL (under his coach and brother Evan Stiles) in addition to competing in High School (MVHS/WPHS) and USA Swimming (F.B.S.T.). He now swims for JMU Club Swim. A third year student majoring in Kinesiology, his love for health and fitness shall pave the path for a career in physical health and education. When John is not in the water or listening to punk rock, this Aquarius enjoys movies and reading.

Brooke Sorber will be assisting John. Brooke is a freshman at UVA, where she is on the softball team. Brooke graduated from MVHS last year with a full IB diploma and was 7th in her class while still managing to excel in softball, swimming and volleyball. Brooke is looking forward to developing the MVYC swim team into a swimming dynamo and excited to be working with our young swimmers.
