Christ the King Campus Ministry is the official Catholic college outreach for any student in the city of Sioux Falls. This is now my second year serving the college students, and I am absolutely convinced that this is an essential ministry in our diocese. College is such a vulnerable time for many students as they live away from home for the first time. It is a time of self -discovery and figuring out what will be the guiding values for the rest of ones life. Many Catholics leave the Church during college. This is why it is so vital to have a meaningful Catholic contact with students during those years. Part of why college ministry is so close to my heart is because of the importance it played in my own faith journey. After High School, I went to USD in Vermillion. During the summer before I started college, my girlfriend at the time had broken up with me. This caused me to go in to that first semester of college with some hurt, anger and confusion. Thankfully, my roommate and I decided to go and visit the Newman Center (the Catholic Church on campus), there we met the priest as well as missionaries who plugged us into bible studies. Because men and women invested in me and my Catholic faith that first year of college, I was able to receive Gods love right in my hurt, anger and confusion. I realized how much God loved me and I experienced that love in the context of a Catholic community centered around prayer and the sacraments. It was within this experience of Gods love that I finally said yesto God to join seminary and discern whether or not God was calling me to be a priest. And here I am today! Can I make a request of you? Could you please pray for Christ the King Campus Ministry? Could you pray for all students in Sioux Falls? Could you pray for me and for those who are helping me minister to those students? Thank you so much! Also, Bishops Charity Hunt on September 20th and 21st helps to support college ministry in our diocese so please consider contributing to that wonderful outreach. From Your Pastor:

In addition to my ministry here at the parish, I also serve as the coordinator for Christ the King Campus Ministry in Sioux Falls. It is a time of self-discovery and figuring out what will be the guiding values for the rest of one’s life. Because men and women invested in me and my Catholic faith that first year of college, I was able to receive God’s love right in my hurt, anger and confusion. I realized how much God loved me and I experienced that love in the context of a Catholic community centered around prayer and the sacraments. The Catholic Church celebrates the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary on its traditional fixed date of September 8, nine months after the December 8 celebration of her Immaculate Conception as the child of Saints Joachim and Anne. The circumstances of the Virgin Mary's infancy and early life are not directly recorded in the Bible, but other documents and traditions describing the circumstances of her birth are cited by some of the earliest Christian writers from the first centuries of the Church. Saint Augustine described the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary as an event of cosmic and historic significance, and an appropriate prelude to the birth of Jesus Christ. “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley,” he said. The fourth-century bishop, whose theology profoundly shaped the Western Church's understanding of sin and human nature, affirmed that “through her birth, the nature inherited from our first parents is changed." https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/the-birth-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary-357

When Mary was born, the world did not know who she was. Sometimes others—and maybe even you—don’t see how special you are. Maybe you forget that God is calling you, too, right now, to do what Mary did—to bring Jesus into the world. When we celebrate his mother’s birth, we honor Jesus too. Today thank God for the gift of life, and give honor to both Mary and Jesus by showing respect and concern for one another—remembering that God has created each person with love and with a call to something very special in life. https://www.loyolapress.com/catholic-resources/saints/saints-stories-for-all-ages/birth-of-mary/

St. Nicholas Religious Education & Youth Info Classes begin September 8.

RE Teachers Needed!

Thank you to all of you who have registered your children for Religious Education classes. We have about half of our students registered. Our teachers met on Wed to prepare for the upcoming school year, but we can still use a few teachers as well as substitute teachers.

All parishioners are invited to join us in our opening Mass on Wed., Sept. 8 at 7:00 PM. It is a great way to begin our year and celebrate together.

Thank you to all who have volunteered your time and talents this year.

Thank you to the following teachers for agreeing to teach this year:

Andy Benning Crysta DeSmet Lori Ganschow (& Sydney) Colleen Halbur Carrie Hanson Jena Healy Courtney Jutting Jodi Kirschenman Abby Klemisch Machelle Kocer Stephanie Lundin Mike Mehlbrech Kortney Miller Shelly Munson Melissa Nielson Julie Ollerich Alecia O'Neil Katie Turgeon Abby VanderWerf Tim & Jenny Vavra Lisa Wermers (& Emerson)

We are still in need of a 2nd grade & 7th grade teacher at 5:30 PM and Kindergarten, 4th grade, 5th grade & 7th grade teachers at 7 PM. RE registration forms are required each year. They are located on the parish website, the church entry and on the table in the parish hall. The form needs to be filled out completely and turned in as soon as possible for your child to be placed in a class. There is a $15 late fee for registrations received after September 1 in addition to the $35 registration fee. The $35 registration fee ($10 for teachers or $115 for a family of 4+) plus the $15 late fee is due when you return the form. The fee covers only the cost of the textbooks and some of the supplies. Textbooks will be issued to students when the registration fee is paid. If there are problems with payment at this time, please let me know (by writing a note on your form, calling, emailing, or speaking to Fr. Mattson if you prefer) and we will make adjustments. Thank you, Vickie Venhuizen 605-498-5792, [email protected]
