Letter from the Rectory – October 2018

Dear Friends,

The changing seasons are one of the blessings of living in our part of the world. However, the days drawing in and the clocks changing can affect some people negatively. SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a recognised type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons, particularly in the winter.

Several months ago, the Archbishop of Canterbury spoke about episodes of depression that he suffers: ‘Black Dog’ in the phrase favoured by Winston Churchill. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Christopher Howse asked whether someone in Justin Welby’s position ‘should not be bathed in the light of hope and consoled by the Good News that he preaches?’

‘No’ was his response. To expect the Archbishop to feel happy all the time because of his faith was, wrote Howse, to misunderstand both depression and faith. Depression is not feeing sad about things such as trouble at work, the miseries depicted on the Ten O’Clock News or even bereavement; rather, more a ‘malignant sadness’.

So how does faith connect with depression? asks Howse. It is a mistake is to conceive of faith as a kind of feeling, as if bunny rabbits and daffodils and ‘all good gifts around us sent from heaven above’ were enough to instil a permanent mood of Christmas morning.

In reality, he writes, faith is a kind of knowledge. It is the same sort of knowledge as that which tells you your husband loves you – evidence-based it may be, but evidence taken on trust.

He takes, as an example of faith, Mother Theresa of Calcutta. There she was, smiling at everyone and saving babies from rubbish tips whilst living an austere life. Yet after her death, her diaries revealed that her smile was ‘a great cloak that hides a multitude of pains.’

Yet throughout her life she kept on praying to the God who was hidden by a dark cloud. Her behaviour followed the convictions that faith brought. She kept engaging with the poorest of the poor, saying, “If you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” James Campbell

An enormous thank you to everyone who contributed so generously to the Harvest Festival collection. On Monday when we met to pass on the wonderful produce to our families,

Michelle and I agreed that Withyham really are our most generous Parish. I enjoy supporting and helping our families at FSW and other charities. It can be difficult at

times for several reasons, but so very rewarding to feel that together we’re making a real difference to the everyday lives of some who are less fortunate.

Please remember that October 27th is the date for ‘Murder at Lavender Hall’. I do hope you can come and support this fundraising event for two marvellous charities, FSW and CLIC

Sargent. Tickets are selling fast, so please don’t miss the opportunity to join with friends and help solve the murder and have fun at the same time!! With my love, Miriam Boobier

Our opening lecture of the 2018–19 season is preceded by the AGM at 1.15pm. Sandy Burnett will tell us about the great collaboration of Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, whose dancers, costume and set designers transformed expectations of

what a night in the theatre could be and the circumstances behind its most notorious stage work. He will examine the build up to the Rite of Spring’s premiere in Paris, take a look at the original costumes, play excerpts from this fascinatingly inventive

score and will explore the issues that divided opinion on that famous first night. Please join us for an interesting lecture followed by refreshments.

õ Groombridge Horticultural Society õ Thank you to everyone for supporting the Autumn Show on 8th September. There were 185 entries – the most for many years! The hot weather seems to have brought bountiful floral displays and fruit and vegetable crops to our local gardens and it was great that so many people came to enjoy the display in the Village Hall.

We hope the good weather will continue until our next event - the Plant Sale on Saturday 13th October from 9am to 12 noon outside the Village Hall. We will be selling the usual range of quality plants at great prices including pansies, wallflowers, cyclamen & many more; please come along and stock up your garden.

This will be followed by our October evening event - at 8pm on Thursday 18th October in the Village Hall (New Hall), Sue Marshall, owner of Iris of Sissinghurst, will be speaking on the English love affair with the Iris. Sue is a former gold medal winner at Chelsea and will be bringing along some of her stunning plants/tubers to sell. As usual, there will be tea, coffee and biscuits provided and all are very welcome – entry is free for members and £3 for non-members.

Groombridge and Hartfield Surgery Patients Participation Group

Do you value your local medical practice? Do you want them to provide the best service possible? Then please support your PPG committee’s aim of providing additional facilities/equipment for the surgeries which would not be available through the normal funding arrangements. We plan two fund-raising events during 2019, one of which will be a quiz night, and hope you will give them your support. Details will follow in later editions of the magazine. As winter approaches it seems an appropriate time to consider steps we can take to protect our health. NHS England advises five things to remember: 1. Get a flu jab. If you are an eligible adult patient or eligible child, the Practice will be operating drop-in clinics at Hartfield on Sat. 20th October and Groombridge on Sat. 17th November. Timings are based on surname initials. See Practice notices or website for details. 2. Heat your home to at least 18C (65F) if you can. 3. Find out about help to pay for your heating at www.gov.uk/phe/keep-warm 4. Go to your local pharmacist as soon as you start to feel ill. 5. Check on other people who might need extra help in the winter

Medical Fact: Dogs cannot operate MRI scanners, but CAT scan.

Withyham Parish Council

Withyham Parish Council (WPC) met on Monday 10th September 2018. Action from the last meeting is on our website www.withyhamparishcouncil.org.uk and Facebook on www.facebook.com/WithyhamParishCouncil. Minutes can also be obtained

from the Clerks at the Old Station, Groombridge.

AFFORDABLE WARMTH STRATEGY: Justin Bailey, Home Energy Efficiency Officer, had been invited to outline Wealden’s ‘Affordable Warmth Strategy’. Across the District, 8.5% of homes are fuel poor but in this Ward of the District, the figure is 11.7% making it the second most fuel poor district in Wealden – which was alarming news. There are various reasons for this but mainly because families and some elderly people have to decide their priority between buying food and turning on the heating (if they have heating installed). WDC offers support with cutting costs of fuel bills and identifying grants for improvements to make homes more efficient. The parish council was asked to assist in publicising WDC’s support and referral pathway for those who would benefit from advice and financial assistance.

REPORT FROM COUNTY AND DISTRICT COUNCILLORS: County Councillor Whetstone reported that the Boundary Commission parliamentary boundary proposals have been submitted, recommending a new area ‘Tunbridge Wells and Crowborough.’ District Councillor Rutherford reported, by email, that Keir continues to miss bin collections in the parish. WDC levels a financial penalty on Kier for their under-performance but can only charge Kier for their failures if they know about them. It is very important that you inform WDC if your bin is not being emptied. Your reports can be made via the website or by telephone to WDC but MUST be made at the latest by 5pm the day after the scheduled collection.

WARD REPORTS - GROOMBRIDGE WARD: The recycling centre in Groombridge Village Hall car park is being misused by people dumping all types of general rubbish in the entrance. Missed collections by Kier of the bins dedicated to glass, paper, tins etc have exacerbated the problem. WDC has arranged to clear this site and will be monitoring the situation. Groombridge Pre-School has requested a small area at the edge of the Recreation Ground for children to use during forest school activities. The Clerk & Cllr Di Kelly will be meeting a pre-school representative to consider a site and the agreement re. usage would be reviewed termly. This novel use of part of a community space by young children was warmly welcomed. ST JOHN’S WARD: A broken down recycling lorry has caused an oil slick on School Lane. Despite WDC attempting a clean- up, there is still staining to the road. The Clerk will report this and request a top up to the grit bin, as this was used initially to cover the oil. WPC had received a request from members of the pre-school at the Reading Room to surface the informal tracks across the Reading Room land to access the building. Site visits with councillors had taken place and consideration had been given to different types of surfacing and the natural appearance of the site. However, councillors agreed that any surfacing would alter the character of the land and that it would be much better if access to the Reading Room continued to be via the perimeter path and drive. WITHYHAM/BLACKHAM WARD: Councillors were concerned with the quality of mowing at Balls Green Community area and queried if a mower with a mulcher could be used. The owner of the fence that leans into the Balls Green Community area has agreed to fix it.

COMMUNITY WARDEN REPORT: This had been circulated prior to the meeting. The Community Warden had been monitoring traffic and parking at St Michael’s school, Withyham, and reported back to the Road Safety Committee. His presence had been much appreciated by parents and the headteacher and it was agreed to undertake similar patrols outside the other two primary schools in the parish during his early shifts.

15

Parking near the Victoria roundabout in Groombridge remains an issue for pedestrians and road users and councillors were pleased that this was being monitored.

COMMUNITY CAFÉ/ COUNCILLOR SURGERY The monthly Community Café continues to be a great success with organisations queueing to have their turn to host the Saturday morning. Do come along for a coffee or tea between 10 am and 12 noon, when refreshments are served and you can chat to friends. A parish councillor is also on hand to answer questions and explain our work.

WITHYHAM PARISH VOLUNTEERS (WPV) We are currently looking for a volunteer co-ordinator who will work alongside the parish clerks and the leads of volunteering projects to recruit and manage volunteers. Time commitment is flexible but ideally we are looking for someone to undertake this role at least 1 day a week. If you are interested helping the parish council develop new volunteering opportunities do please contact us – our details are below.

SPEEDWATCH: Further sessions have been undertaken and more are planned. We do need more volunteers. Online training is available.

RESIDENTS’ WELCOME PACK: Many residents moving into the area have asked where they can seek information about key contacts in the parish and so we have designed our own Residents’ Pack which consists of a Welcome Card and information leaflet which we intend councillors to take with them when they greet new residents. More detailed information will be on our website. These packs will be available shortly.

Next Parish Council Meeting: Monday 8 Oct. at 7.30pm. All welcome. Diana Kelly: Chair
