Pastor’s Message

“A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, ‘If you wish, you can make me clean.’

Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.”

Mark 1:40-42

One of our recently canonized saints, St. Marianne Cope, T.O.S.F. (Jan. 23, 1838 – Aug. 9, 1918) did something that many others refused to do: work with those suffering from Hansen’s disease. Letters were sent out to over 50 reli-gious orders of sisters requesting them to send sisters to assist those suffering from this debilitating illness. It was Marianne Cope’s Order, a branch of Franciscan Sisters serving in Syracuse, New York, that answered the call. In 1883 she along with six other sisters relocated to the island of Moloka’i on a huge leap of faith. She was well equipped for the mission. She was a registered nurse and had experience in hospital administration. Born in Germa-ny, she moved to the United States when still young. She was known for her intelligence, great organizational skills, stability and of course her deep faith that also gave her a spirit of perseverance. She eventually settled on the island of Moloka’i and made great progress in elevating the care of service that those in her care received. She separated the men from the women and children, greatly improved sanitation standards, and was selfless in sharing her many gifts and talents for the well-being of others. She continued the work of another canonized saint, Fr. Damian De Vuester (Jan. 3, 1840 – April 15, 1889), who died after he himself contracted Hansen’s disease. Sister Marianne nev-er did succumb to that illness. Like Jesus who reached out to the leper in need of healing, let us be open to showing compassion and mercy to those who are suffering from illness or are downtrodden. Fr. Dennis

Construction Update

It is always exciting to see the structure finally going up after months of underground work and site preparation. This coming week we will see a continuation of pouring of the main floor level. During that time retaining walls will be poured near the gym for the outside transition from the gym level to the lower garage level. Work will then begin on pouring the tilt-up concrete walls of the main gym area. Please remember to utilize the commercial parking area on Oakgate Drive in order to make the closer spaces available for those who cannot walk that distance. Updated time lapse videos, and new drone fly-overs are available for all to view at: https://spaces.hightail.com/space/VrhVBgbwuB. Click on “manual sort order” and change to sort by date added to bring the latest videos to the upper left of the previews.

ST. MATTHEW PARISH REACHING A MILESTONE!

Many of you know that this year, 2018, marks the 300th anniversary of the City of San Antonio. Did you know that this November our parish will realize its’ 50th year of existence! Also, our school was founded in 1993 and is celebrating its’ 25th anniversary this year as well. What a blessing our founding families and first pastors have given us as they laid the foundation for what has become the second largest parish in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, with over 5,000 registered families, and arguably the par-ish with the most ministries and organizations and certainly the largest Catholic Elementary and Middle School! We have much to be proud of. In upcoming bulletins we will be an-nouncing future events that will be offered as we celebrate our parish’s 50th anniversary.

Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. According to the law of the Church, the requirement of fasting affects all those who have celebrated their 18th birthday but have not yet celebrated their 60th birthday. The rule of fasting is that only one full meal a day may be taken in addition to two small meals taken “to maintain sufficient strength”. Together, however, these two smaller meals should not equal a full meal. Abstinence refers to refraining from eating meat. The common estima-tion of the community is used to determine what falls under the category of meat. That would nor-mally include beef, poultry, lamb and pork. The rule of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years or old-er Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are to be observed as both days of fast and abstinence. All Fridays during Lent should likewise be observed as days of abstinence. There is no particular legal sanction attached to failure in observance. Yet as a Catholic Christian you will not lightly hold your-self excused, however, from the Lenten fast.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Station of the Cross will be held on Fridays during Lent at the Devotional Park 4:30 p.m. and after the Friday 6 P.M. daily Mass at St. Matthew.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, countless lives are spiritually transformed and uplifted thanks to the generosity of individuals like you to the annual Archbishop’s Appeal. Pray on how you can make a sacrificial gift to the 2018 Archbishop’s Appeal. A gift will help continue the Appeal ministries that form and educate future priests, deacons, and catechists, as well as provide food, clothing and other social service programs that aid the most vulnerable in our community. If you have already responded to the Archbishop’s letter sent to your home, thank

you for your generosity. If you have not yet had an opportunity, we invite you to pray and consider making a gift to this year’s Appeal. Pledge envelopes and pencils are available in the pews (and/or in the vestibule) of the Church. Once completed, place your Appeal pledge envelope in the offertory during Mass or drop it in the mail. Online gifts can be made at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or by calling the Office of Archbishop’s Appeal at 210-734-1604. Thank you for your prayers and generosity. May God bless you!

She is also a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher that supports the Church in the Holy Land.
