WELCOME AND GUIDE

We welcome you to the 1982 St. Mary's County Science and Engineering Fair. This is the 22nd annual science fair, the fair having first occurred in 1961. The science exhibits displayed here have been submitted by students in the public, private, and parochial schools in the county.

The exhibits are the result of science projects generated by the students' interest in science. The science and engineering fair offers the students a medium through which they may present their findings to their fellow students and to the public. According to the bylaws of the St. Mary's County Science Fair Board, the exhibits should be extracurricular scientific school requirements. However, projects developed for school credit, but not during class instructional time, may be entered in the fair. Course grades are not dependent upon student participation in the science fair. Students are encouraged to seek help from teachers, scientists, and others, provided they give recognition to all persons from whom such help is obtained.

Exhibits are entered in two divisions: Junior (grades 6 through 9) and Senior (grades 10 through 12). In each division, exhibits are placed in one of eleven subject areas as listed in this program. Each exhibit is assigned a project number which is listed in this program. Corresponding numbers are placed on the exhibits. All exhibits must adhere to the size and safety regulations promulgated by the Prince George's Science Fair Association and endorsed by the St. Mary's County Science Fair Board. No vertebrate animals may be exhibited at the fair.

Selected exhibits from the St. Mary's County Fair will be chosen to be entered in the Prince George's Area Science Fair which will be held on April 16-18 in the Largo Student Center, Prince George's Community College. The 1982 International Science and Engineering Fair will be in Houston, Texas.

The cover for this program was designed by Susan Hayden of Chopticon High School. This design was chosen as most appropriate in depicting the theme of this year's science fair, "Robotics". Second place winner was John Guinther of Great Mills High School. Third place cover art winner was Debbie Sydnor of Chopticon High School. Recipients of honorable mention in this poster contest were Robyn Bernard, Tuyet Hoang, and James Litke, all from Great Mills High School. The winning entries are on display at the science and engineering fair.

The St. Mary's County Science Fair Board would like to thank Dr. Richard Weigle, President of St. Mary's College, and the staff of the Montgomery Arts Center for making the school facilities available for the 1982 Science and Engineering Fair.
