When a google search is undertaken for the definition of liberation, to liberate means “to release someone from confinement”. Fr Richard believes that if we have these 8 virtues active in our lives, we can’t hold ourselves back from living the message of Jesus to others: 1. Obedience (from the latin word: Obaudire: to listen) 2. Joy 3. Compassion 4. Humility 5. Care of the Earth 6. Gratitude 7. Forgiveness 8. Love Have a great week. Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Last week, we celebrated Catholic Education Week. There were

many activities through the week where we not only showcased our

Catholic identity but renewed our mission and identity as a Catholic

school continually working to live the message of Jesus.

On Thursday of last week, the Year 5 and 6 students competed in

the Catholic Schools Netball and Touch Football competition in

Toowoomba. According to the adults who accompanied the

children, we can celebrate some wonderful stories of Jesus actively

present in the lives of our students. This was shown not through the

number of goals or tries scored but by the way our children actively

encouraged and supported their team mates and team mates from

other schools. It was wonderful to hear of the support our students

gave to other students who had never scored a try before. How easy

it is to make the lives of others just that little bit better by letting go

of our own ego and letting our soul shine.

On Friday of last week, all staff from Toowoomba Diocese catholic

schools, within travelling distance to Toowoomba, gathered at St

Saviour’s College for the Bishop’s Inservice Day. The guest speaker

was Fr Richard Leonard. Fr Richard was born in Warwick and

attended our catholic schools before moving to Toowoomba.

Fr Richard spoke of Pope Francis’ Signs of Liberation. When a google

search is undertaken for the definition of liberation, to liberate

means “to release someone from confinement”. Fr Richard believes

that if we have these 8 virtues active in our lives, we can’t hold

ourselves back from living the message of Jesus to others:

1. Obedience (from the latin word: Obaudire: to listen)

2. Joy

3. Compassion

4. Humility

5. Care of the Earth

6. Gratitude

7. Forgiveness

8. Love

Have a great week. Margaret

RE News Mary MacKillop Feast Day Yesterday, 8th August, was the Feast Day of Australia’s first

Saint, Mary MacKillop.

Mary MacKillop is a woman who dared to believe in her dream and to trust in God. Her life as a woman who lived the Gospel faithfully and who today we would call a missionary disciple, gave her the courage to trust in God, to take risks and to break boundaries. It called her to travel down rough roads and on stormy seas into places well beyond her imaginings. Her presence brought an explosion of God’s love to the most needy in Australia and beyond, thus improving the lives of those who were poor. She was a woman before her time with an incredible vision. She walked our land, knew our stars and read the signs of the time. She is indeed a saint for all people.

Mary MacKillop Prayer

Ever generous God,

You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop

To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ

and constant in bringing hope and encouragement

to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy.

With confidence in your generous providence

and through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop

We ask that you grant our request……………….

We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit

so that we too, like Mary MacKillop,

may live with courage, trust and openness.

Ever generous God hear our prayer.

We ask this through Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Cuppa and Chat We are going to trial changing our day to every Friday morning to meet for a Cuppa and

Chat after school drop off. You are very welcome to join us for great company and a quick cuppa.

Family Mass – Thank you Thank you to all who served in the ministries at the Family Mass on Sunday.

Special thanks to Mrs Carol Sharp who assisted the children. Our next family

Mass is Saturday, 25th August at 6pm. Please let Mrs Young know if you would

like to join in.

Prep Liturgy

Yesterday the Prep classes celebrated a wonderful liturgy based on Alison Lester’s book ‘Kissed by the Moon’. They shared the story of wonder at our beautiful world and how we have so much to be grateful for.

Administration BUS PARKING We have a bus park at the front of the Lower Campus between 8:00 and 3:30 for the safety of our children coming and going on buses. We continually have the bus drivers telling us that parents are parking there to come into the school or using it as a drop and go. This is a safety issue so please abide by the road rules. School Fees For the first time, school fees have been emailed. It has come to our attention that some accounts have gone to peoples Junk Mail or Spam box in their email. If this has happened to you please mark our email address as Not Junk, or go to Spam email and make our email address as not spam. If you did not receive your account, please let us know on 4661 1872. The due date for fees this term is Friday, 24th August 2018.

School Hats The new school hats will be available to students from the Lower Campus this term as follows:

➢ Year 1 – on sale from Monday, 13th August – Friday, 24th August ➢ Prep – on sale from Monday, 27th August – Friday 14th September

Parent/Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held for all classes in Weeks 5, Monday, 13th August – Friday, 17th August 2018. With the written reporting process finalised for Semester One, it is hoped that all parents and caregivers will take up the opportunity to meet with their child/children’s teacher/s in Parent/Teacher interviews in week 5.

Congratulations to this week’s RISE UP Award recipients.

Spotted Rising Up This week we launched our new ‘Spotted Rising Up’ slips. Our staff is on the lookout to spot

students who are rising up – that is students who are Respectful, Inclusive, Safe, Exceptional,

Understanding and Prayerful. Students will be given a slip that goes into a weekly draw that

has been sponsored by the P&F. We are pleased to be able to purchase vouchers from local

businesses of families and parish members.

Congratulations to Annabelle Gleeson and Aiden Byrne who were the first winners but also to

the many students who were able to take home a slip this week to celebrate the positive things

they have done.

Curriculum Science is everywhere Just imagine in a single day how many aspects of your life is filled with

science — from your own internal biology to the flat-screen TV in the living room.

I have this past week, had the wonderful opportunity to visit a few classrooms and lucky

enough to stumble across students actively involved in classroom Science lessons. Year One

are learning about the complex world of ants. Year Six have been sparked into action to find

out about electricity and Year Three are observing the changes that occur when seeds begin

to grow.

I would have to say that the face of Science has changed a lot over the years and is no longer

just a matter of recalling facts. Science in today’s schools allows students to explore their

world and discover new things. It is also an active subject, containing activities such as hands-

on labs and experiments. This makes science well-suited to active younger children. The skills

of scientific thought, method and inquiry are the skills that will benefit students long after

they have completed their education.

As human we are hard wired to solve problems. Encourage curiosity and inquiry in your child

as it is how they will find the answers to questions that will change the world. Take the time

to ask your child/children what they are learning in Science this term.

Sport News On Friday 10 August many of our older students will head off to the SD athletic trials. Students at these trials and all sporting events participate to the best of their ability. As supporters at these events it is important to remember that spectators are bound by a code of conduct that provides all participants with a safe and supportive environment in which to perform. Thank you to all those parents that take the time out of their busy lives to support the St. Mary’s teams in all the various sporting events we participate in.

SD Girls and Boys Cricket Trials Wednesday 15 August – Slade Cricket Oval Information has been sent home to all the students yesterday who showed interest in participating in the SD Cricket trials. Could the consent forms and nomination fee be returned to school by Friday 10 August. Parents will need to provided transport to and from this event.

Congratulations A BIG thank you goes to all the students who participated in the CEW Netball and Touch Football Carnival. I would like to commend each and every student on the exceptional sportsmanship they showed to other teams and their fellow team members. This day also bought out the true spirit of catholic education when several students from Assumption volunteers to help and encourage the younger St. Mary’s crew.

Library News Second hand book sale at Market Day We are looking for second hand books to sell at the Market Day event on our school’s Feast day – the Feast of the Assumption – August 15. If would like to donate something, please send it with your student to one of our libraries. Thankyou.

Book Week Dress up Day The theme for Book Week this year is “Find your Treasure”. The Dress up for Book Week day will be TUESDAY AUGUST 21. Start thinking about your costume (less than 3 weeks to go). Costumes must relate to the theme or a book character.
