EditorialThis is the first annual in some years to be published during the following academicyear. This is an achievement but one which should be possible every year. The SchoolManagement and the Editorial team have put in place measures to ensure there is notsuch a lapse in future. As the school and its activities continue to grow, it is vital tokeep a record of activities and developments each year. Every student should be ableto look at a bookshelf and see there, one, six or even eleven years recorded. St. Mary’shas its focuses, there are rugby heroes and academic successes but the school placesa great deal of pride in having something for everyone.

Each year the activities list gets a little bit longer. In this annual you will read aboutthe extension of the Basketball activities to all years in the school. You will seephotographs from the first Music Department Christmas Concert complete withduelling banjos. St. Mary’s is now a phase one school for the introduction ofTechnology as a Leaving Certificate subject. We have also placed extra emphasis onextracurricular activities like the Scouts and the Young Scientists.

There are of course the old reliable items: success and disappointments on the rugbyand cricket fields and the cycle of the terms and seasons. The editorial team hasworked hard to ensure all of the achievements and activities of the students havebeen recorded and that everyone has been included. It is also down to the whole St.Mary’s community to contribute to the Annual. We rely on the pictures of the victorieson rainy, far flung rugby pitches and reports of the first smack of leather on willowin the summer term. For everyone to be included as they should be, we need theefforts of as many as possible.

This year saw the retirement of Kevin Lewis from the Senior School. His untiringwork with past and present students is well known. He has left behind a wonderfulcareers programme and an office packed with resources to assist everyone from theaspiring astronaut to zoologist. The fact that so many years of past students still treathim as their career mentor is the best compliment that can be paid to him.

The Junior School bade farewell to Mary O’Sullivan who left after 27 years of teaching5th Class. This Editor remembers well her ability to hear two boys read at once and beable to correct them both on pronunciation and punctuation.

This is the first time that readers will see reference to the Boards of Management inthe College. They have been in existence since September 2004 and have a key rolein the development of the College. Under their management the Junior School willsoon see new computer facilities and interactive white boards in the class rooms.Another development featured is the Parents’ Association – which has increased co-operation and communication between families and the College like never before.

In short 2006–2007 was another busy year for the College. We hope that you enjoylooking back over it. As always these memories have more value in the years to come.Whatever moves you make in life, and may they always be successful ones, alwaysmake sure you know where your Annuals are.

The production of this Annual would not have been possible without the help ofmany staff, students (past and present), scout leaders, games coaches and families. The Editorial Team would like to give special thanks to Fr. Flavin, Clive Byrne, LiamNaughton, Brian Wall, Colm Sweeney, Denis Murphy, Isabelle Kelly, Pauline Fox,Georgina Collins, Mary O’Donnell, Marian Fitzpatrick and Ray Sloan.

SYMBOLISMThe Escutcheon is quartered. On the right base (as you observe it) there is theunchangeable five point silver star with golden rays, symbolic of fidelity to itspurpose of shedding light and guidance in the pursuit of Him Who enlightensevery man and Who is the “Bright and Morning Star”. (Apoc XXII. 16).

The upper right bears the Cross, the emblem of trials and difficulties. It is ingold on a silver ground, symbolic of the precious outcome of trials well borne. These two symbols combine to produce the College motto: “Fidelitas in Arduis”(Fidelity in Difficulties).

On the upper left quarter there is the Dove in silver, symbolic of the Holy Ghost, from which descend seven golden rays, the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential in the practice of “Fidelitas in Arduis”.

The left base bears a red heart transfixed with a sword and encircled with goldenroses. This is symbolic of the Holy Heart of Mary, suffering - the supreme purelyhuman type of “Fidelitas in Arduis”. The golden roses symbolise the reward thatcomes from such fidelity.

ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2007 65

The Scouting Year started off inSeptember, with a commitment fromall the Leaders for another year.2006/2007 marked David O’Loughlinand John McGill’s first year as SectionLeaders of the 7th Scout Troop afterGavin Fogarty stepped down from hisrole of Section Leader following sevensuccessful years in charge. We owe agreat debt of gratitude to Gavin for hiscontribution.

The year also included the plan torenovate the Den in order to create amodern functioning building which willlast another 20 years and have thepotential to fulfill a number of roles inhelping to promote Scouting in St.Mary’s College. The financial support

from the College and Parents has beenincredible and is much appreciatedwhile praise must also go to theLeaders for doing their part in theunskilled labour.

Special attention should be mentionedin dispatches to the hard work anddiligence of Niall Lucas and PaulO’Reilly who almost lived down in theDen for seven weeks managing andworking with the project on a dailybasis.

CUB YEARThe Cubs started up early with aconscious decision to keep numbers ata lower level (26) that allowed forgreater integration of the fourth and

fifth class boys and if the truth be toldless names for the leaders toremember!

Our first overnight in October took usto Knockree outside Enniskerry, wherethe first timers learned the joys ofhiking after the initial shock thatmammy’s taxi didn’t quite take youdoor to door. Our Christmas campbrought us to Glendalough for a coldJanuary weekend where the fully

equipped conference room allowed forgames and a DVD night to complimentthe crisp weather as we mounted thelakes with picturesque views... somemay have required a little morecoercion than others! Our busy weeklymeetings of badgework; map reading, first aid, orienteering, and our offsiteactivities; back woods cooking, thenational aquatic centre, trips to theZoo, Donnybrook fire station, thenatural history museum, Pine Forest,

and Larch Hill all helped this year’stroop to bond and have fun. The skillsand experiences gained fromSeptember to May culminated in thehighlight of the year – Summer Camp. For eight days in early June St. Mary’sCubs troop basked in almost constantsunshine in Chelmsford, North East ofLondon. Some may think the challengeof Dublin and Stansted airports withtwenty 10 and 11 year olds waschallenge enough; but nothing wasmore challenging than the activitiesthat Skreens Park Camp site providedus with. A jam-packed schedule of rockclimbing, abseiling, rifling, archery, canoeing, ice skating, swimming, a dayin Thorpe Theme Park and a trip toLondon visiting Hamley’s and LondonDungeons made for an absolutelyfantastic week, albeit exhausting! Howto pitch a tent, hang a washing linethat actually kept clothes off theground, to not getting bitten whilekeeping insects and grass out of yourdinner were some of the minor issuesthat had to be overcome. Friendshipswere forged and new skills learned inwhat can only be described as one ofour best year’s yet with hopefully manyreturning in September to welcome thenew troops in.

SCOUTS SUMMER CAMPThe scout motto may be “Bí Ullamh”,

but the St. Mary’s scouts have a mottoof their own, “Adapt & Overcome”,which is exactly what 50-odd scoutsdid when we arrived at De-Kluiscampsite in Belgium to find that fourpallets holding all our equipmenthadn’t been delivered yet. After a slowfirst two days, our equipment finallyshowed up, to everyone’s delight andwe made the best of the ten remainingdays of Summer Camp 2007. On-siteactivities varied from sports leagues tocustom made challenges, all of whichearned patrols points towards thePatrol Competition. Highlights of campinclude our town visits to Leuven andAntwerp, our trip to Walibi AmusementPark and a Bivouacking night wherethe scouts built and slept in their ownforest shelters overnight under theirPatrol Leaders’ supervision.

This year, after long discussions the6th Troop PL’s picked Ross Holohan asRawlie of Camp and David Galligan asScout of Camp. After 13 days of trenchwarfare the eventual 6th TroopSummer Camp Patrol Competitionwinners were the Raven’s Feet Patrolunder the guidance of Gary Blackburn.7th Troop Awards went to AaronMurphy as Scout of Camp, Luke Wallisas Rawley of Camp, Sam Wynne asMost Improved Scout of Camp and TheStags as Patrol of Camp.

7TH TROOP SUMMER CAMP

“The camp was brilliant and theweather tested our scouting abilities tothe limit but like true St. Mary’s scoutswe prevailed” (John Jones 5th Year). Allin all, Belgium was an excellent end toa great year which saw membershipremain at strength with two full troopsof 35 scouts each, a return to theDublin County Patrol Challenge for thefirst time in five years, some hugelysuccessful overnight activities and ahell of a lot of fun.

The Scouting year 2006/2007 has beena great success thanks primarily to thehard work of all the Leaders & Scouters(including Cub Scouts).

We look forward to the New Year withit its challenges and fun!

Yours in Scouting

PAUL ROCHE,Unit Leader, St. Mary’s Scouts

Some of the 4th year scouts in the 6th

and 7th Troops visited Capetown andtook part in an international scoutingevent over Christmas and the NewYear. The group set off on 22nd

December, and acclimatised staying ata Sea Scout base in Cape Town andundertaking day trips to places such asRobben Island, the National Aquarium, the Garden District and the District 6Museum.

On the 28th December the boys joinedup with an international scouting eventwhich was taking place in theCederberg Mountain Range/Reserve.Here, over the course of 12 days theSt. Mary’s Troop hiked 10-15kilometres per day – on ruggedmountain trails, in extremely warm

weather, carrying with them all theyneeded to camp out under the stars. InActivity Centres along the way theirskills were also put to the test as theytried their hand at: archery;marksmanship; rock climbing; scubadiving; and more besides.

On their return to Cape Town, the ladsenjoyed a little home hospitality fromlocal scouts. Then, having recoveredsomewhat from the rigours of theprevious weeks, they undertook a hiketo the top of Table Mountain(including an overnight stay) and toursof Boulders Bay, the Cape of GoodHope and Hout Bay. They arrived homeon 13th January worn and wearytravellers, with many tales to tell andmemories to cherish for years to come.

Three projects made it through thevery tough selection process for thefinals of the BT Young ScientistCompetition in January 2007.

The Dodder ProjectFiachra Maguire was richly rewardedfor the huge amount of work that heput into his project. He received theEPA award and won first prize in theBiological and Ecological Sciences –junior section. He analysed the watersof the Dodder at six different positions,he studied Aquatic Macroinvertebrates,Turbidity (clarity) and pH (acidity),Dissolved Oxygen and Algal Bioassaysas measures of water quality. Hisconclusions have been recorded in theIrish Scientists Year Book 2007. Hefound that while some areas of the

river were affected by local pollutionand conditions; the river as a wholewas relatively unpolluted. The qualityof the tests conducted and excellentpresentation at the exhibition, earnedFiachra these two prestigious awards.

Investigation of Cosmetic Changes to Plants Conor McCarvill, Barry Flynn and DavidSwift were Highly Commended for theirproject investigating how colourchanges, taste changes and scentchanges might be artificially made toplants. They grew potted plants, germinated seeds and examined cutflowers and added a variety ofsubstances to the soil and water. Theydiscovered that cut flowers and seedscould easily be coloured and made to

Patterns in PokerDespite worrying their parents and

teachers by their devotion to pokerplaying, Jeff Glynn and Peter Rocherealised that playing behaviour can bealtered by consuming different foods. They carefully analysed each hand inthe game and their results showed thatplayers are more likely to bluff badlywhen sugar intake was high.

St. Mary’s College RFC 2006-2007- Extract from Report included in St. Mary’s College PPU Newsletter –

The Season 2006-2007 will beremembered as an historic seasonmainly because of the opening ofCroke Park to our national Rugby andSoccer teams while Lansdowne Road isrebuilt to a state of the art all-seatedstadium. St. Mary’s College RFC hasalways been in the vanguard when itcomes to providing the very best interms of playing and clubhousefacilities. So while the IRFU are forgingahead with their development theRugby Club is forging ahead with ourown developments.

The groundwork for the Floodlightingand Clubhouse Developments was alldone in the previous season. I wouldlike to pay tribute to all involved fortheir foresight and for the energy theyall gave and will continue to give tothese projects. It is hoped all goingaccording to plan that the fruits oftheir labour will be on show in theearly part of next season.

The Senior team finished in tenth placeout of sixteen in the first division ofthe AIL, and I fully expect that with asquad strengthened by the return ofsome players, combined with theupcoming home grown talent from theU20’s of last season, the comingseason will be a very exciting one forSt. Mary’s.

This year the J1’s had a successfulseason, with a league record of 9 wins,3 losses and 2 draws. The Metro cup

run saw us defeated by the strongestteam in the league, Clontarf.

The J2’s finished 8th out of 14 in theirleague and in the O’Connell Cup lost inthe quarter final to Greystones.

The J3’s lost in the final of the leagueto Lansdowne and also lost toLansdowne in the final of the MoranCup.

The J4’s finished 5th in their leaguesection but in the Winters Cup lost inthe first round to Millmount House.

Despite efforts to get more fixtures, the J5’s suffered through opposition

John Pyne, President, St. Mary’s College RFC2006-2007

not having similar playing numbers.Only other involvement was the DPSmyth Cup, in which we finished asrunners-up.

The J6s/Vets have had a fairlysuccessful season. They brought homethe Plate in the Vets Summer League, they retained the George PayneMemorial Trophy and of course after along hard campaign they won the TomFox Cup by beating Old Belvedere 7points to 6 in the Final.

Last season the fifty-nine U20’s played34 matches, competing in all LeinsterU20 competitions, the Pennant League,Pennant Cup, the J.P. Fanagan leagueand the McCorry Cup. The J.P.Fanagan team also competed in the AllIreland U20 Cup.

The Pennant team ended in the lowerhalf of the league and lost in the firstround in the cup.

In their league the J.P Fanagan teamwere beaten only by Lansdowne andUCD and lost the league by only twopoints. We seldom get so close towinning a league as we did thisseason...

The J.P. Fanagan team also got intothe All-Ireland Cup and played thequarter final in Limerick against ULBohs. That match we unfortunatelylost in the last minute. This same teamplayed in the final of the McCorry Cupagainst Blackrock. This final was amatch to behold, and one that willremain in the minds for many a year, losing by a mere two points, instoppage time. A heart-wrenchingresult for a team that deserved more.

This year the U20s were verygenerously sponsored by Tulfarris Golfand Country Club and their logo canbe seen on the players’ jerseys. We lookforward to a continued partnership inthe years to come.

A very busy, enjoyable and successfulseason was had by all our Mini Rugbyteams, under 7’s through to Under12’s, with as many as three teams ineach age group. Each age group had amanager and at least three coaches.

Senior Cup Team Report2006-2007

The SCT of 2007 was bothunsuccessful and successful.Unsuccessful as we were not the 6th

Mary’s team to win the Senior Cup.Successful as we won the PlateCompetition and ended our schoolboycareers on winning terms.

This year’s team, captained by ShaneTimmons, was a strong side retainingseven players from the previous year’ssemi-finalist team including: ShaneTimmons, Marc McKay, Paul Gannon,Ray Crotty, Darren Hudson, ColmQuinn and Conor McGlade. Aftersummer training the team’s

expectations were high. The opener ofthe season was against a touringScottish side Marr College. It resultedin a convincing win, which led us intothe next game versus Blackrock. Atight fought game saw ‘Rock win inthe last minute or two. This was to beone of two losses leading up to theCup. The other defeat was at the handsof Paul Roos Gymnasium, a SouthAfrican side that were the championsof South Africa’s school rugby. Themost anticipated game of the year wasagainst eventual Cup winners, St.Michael’s, in Kenilworth, which resultedin a 8-8 draw and in which a NiallSheedy try was noteworthy. The Cup draw left us in the bottomhalf of the draw facing CUS in the firstround. A battle in Stradbrook sawMary’s squeeze through in to the nextround, aided by outstandingperformances from Paul Early, RichardShaffrey, David Wilson, Stephen Walshand also a Peter Barrett try. JackMcGrath’s impact on the game comingoff the bench was quite outstanding. In Donnybrook, Clongowes, the morefancied team, went ahead, but a ConorMcGlade try gifted by a Brendan Shorttpass took Mary’s back into the game. Itwas a 8-8 draw in the end and wewere very unlucky not to win with allthe possession and territory in the last20 minutes. The replay was played inNaas Rugby Club, Clongowes came outthe better of the two sides in thesecond round but there was a lot to

say for the Mary’s defence and spirit.

We then entered the Plate Competition. This was a more successful campaign .En route to the final we beat Wesley,Roscrea and King’s Hospital. The finalwas played in Stradbrook against St.Gerard’s. Only minutes into the gameout-half Gareth Redmond scored a try ,which he converted. Then he slotted apenalty to make it 10-0. Gerard’splayed with courage and discipline andby early in the second half theymanaged to draw the game 10-10. Apenalty by both sides leveled the gameand with only minutes remaining RayCrotty gathered the ball and took offat a blistering pace to score a beautifultry that was successfully converted. Thegame ended 20-13. This is the secondtime St. Mary’ got their name on thePlate. It would be a mistake to writeoff this team as a 15-man side, therewas great depth and in the Plate

Senior Thirds – Season Review Confidence was high among the 3rdspanel at the start of the season. A high6th year contingent mixed with excitingtalent from 5th and 4th year seemed tobe a very good blend. The season waskick-started with convincing homewins over rivals St. Michael’s andBlackrock, and followed by ademolition of Terenure away. The firstmajor challenge of the year presenteditself soon after with a trip to MountTemple. Despite the huge sizedisadvantage, Mary’s superior pace andskill and a colossal performance by theforward pack resulted in a 19-12victory. The momentum from thismatch was carried on to the clash with

Belvedere in Templeville Road, withMary’s claiming an emphatic 17-0 win.At this stage, the mood in the squadwas very pleasant and training wasalways enjoyable, especially with theaddition to the coaching panel ofMartin ‘Burmy’ Burmeister, SimonConnellan as well as the ever presentBarry Leonard. The team was reallystarting to gel well, with tries fromEamon McAleese and Daniel Barnwellcomplementing the pace of Cian Morrisin the backs. The pack were a veryformidable unit with captain KevinGeraghty leading by example and wellsupported by brothers Niall and NickCroke and Brendan O’Connell in theback row.

came at the end of November with thearrival of the touring Victoria SchoolsU16 side from Australia. Despite thefact that the most of the Aussie boyswere 16 or younger, they werephysically far bigger than the St.Mary’s team and were full ofconfidence having won every previousmatch of their tour so far. In an epicmatch, however, Mary’s managed tobreak that record thanks to someexcellent running rugby and a faultlesskicking performance from Peter Reilly. This ended up being our last fixturebefore the New Year, and training overthe Christmas was minimal. Our lastfixture in preparation for theimpending league competition wasaway to Wallace in Lisburn. Five triesfrom Daniel Barnwell helped Mary’s toa convincing win. We knew, however, the challenge in the league would befar greater. However on the back ofour 100% record and with a host ofexperienced players such as StephenCulligan in the pack and Mark Conway,Conor Breen and Peter Reilly in thebacks, not to mention our supersubEoin Lynagh who had just returnedfrom injury; the squad entered theleague with a real sense of belief. Animpressive defeat of Castleknock wasthe beginning of a very tough groupstage. Two great second halfperformances in the following battlesagainst St. Columba’s and Kilkennyrespectively maintained Mary’s 100%record and booked them a place in thesemi-final against Roscrea. A longjourney down to Tipperary didn’t seemto bother Mary’s as they took a 3-0lead into half-time. Roscrea hit backwith a try soon after the break and ledright up until the final play of thegame. When all hope seemed lost, EoinLynagh intercepted a stray pass to run60 yards and seal an astonishing

victory. It was an unbelievable way towin and the Mary’s players and theirsupporters couldn’t conceal their sheerdelight.

The final against Wilson’s Hospitaltook place the following Wednesday. This was a huge opportunity for Mary’shaving been narrowly beaten in semi-finals the two previous years. Anervous started resulted in theopponents taking a 3-0 lead. However, yet another crucial try from EamonnMcAleese meant Mary’s lead 7-3 at thebreak. Wilson’s Hospital kicked anotherpenalty straight after and the gamewas in the balance at 7-6. Mary’sbroke away though, with a drop goaland penalty from Conor Breen andanother converted McAleese try left us20-6 in the lead. A late try fromWilliam Andreucetti sealed the win. Itwas a great relief for coach BarryLeonard and the likes of KevinGeraghty, Eoin Lynagh, Conor Breen,Nick Croke, David-Owen Mahon andPeter Reilly who had all missed outnarrowly in past seasons, and alongwith other 6th Years, Mark Conway,Cian Morris and David O’ Connor, finished their schoolboy rugby careerson a high.

The whole season was not onlysuccessful but completely enjoyableand for that, on behalf of the entiresquad we would like to thank thecoaches; Martin Burmeister, SimonConnellan, Gareth Agnew, and ofcourse Barry Leonard. We would alsolike to thank every member of thesquad and wish the 4th and 5th yearsmembers of the team good luck in thefuture.

Junior Cup Team Report2006-2007Played: 19 Tries For: 68Won: 11 Tries Against: 17Lost: 4Drawn: 3

This year’s Junior Cup Team had a veryaverage season but at the same timeproved to be a little unlucky over thecourse of the year. It was a verytalented team, full of potential butunfortunately they struggled withconsistency, which led to their firstround cup exit. Despite this the spirit, attitude and commitment of the teamwere tremendous. They were alwayshard-working and never went down

without a fight. The team got off to asolid start with a cricket like scoreagainst Marr College from Scotland, followed by a hard-won draw againstBlackrock and an undeserved oneagainst Terenure.

It was a strong all-round team, led wellby Captain Maurice Walsh and Vice-Captain Liam Curran. There were otherleaders around the pitch too, in theform of Ronan Lowe, David Fanaganand Eoin Moriarty. The team retainedthree players from the previous year –out half, Moriarty and centres: KillianGrumley-Traynor and Walsh – and onesub, Mark Fallon, a very strong numbereight. Fallon was backed up by twoexcellent flankers: Aaron Martin and

Ronan Lowe. The team had a verystrong line-out with Liam Curran andPaddy Doran in the second row and agood scrum with Gerry Gallivan (from2nd Year), Ciaran O’Reilly and ShaneKearney.

On paper we had one of the finestback lines in Leinster. The half-backsFanagan and Moriarty are among themost skilful in the school and centresTraynor and Walsh were very strong intheir carrying, tackling and off-loading,as well as scoring a good number oftries between them. We possessed twolethal finishers on the wing in HarryNorton and, from 2nd Year, Eoin Farrell, who finished top try scorer with 13tries – and the rest weren’t far behind!Lastly, we possessed the most multi-

talented player in Leinster at full-back.During the course of the year DavidO’Halloran played in every position inthe back-line, except scrum-half.

Of course, no team can do well unlessthey’ve got a strong bench behindthem. The players mentioned alreadywere pushed all the way by thereplacements/panellists: DomhnaillDrumm, Cian O’Brien, Hugh McGovern,Steven O’Carroll, Cillian Barden, ConorHogan, Eoin Mulcahy, Cian Clynes,Killian Barnwell, Conor Sweeney andothers. Both Barnwell and Sweeneywere particularly unlucky not makingthe team due to serious injuriessustained earlier in the season.By the time the Cup rolled around wehad accrued a collection of mixed

results with wins over Clongowes,Castleknock, Belvedere and Pres. Corkbut two defeats by St. Michael’s.

In the Cup we were drawn againstNewbridge in Donnybrook. TheNewbridge team proved to beextremely fast and strong and took anearly lead. In the second half, Mary’scame back – setting up camp on theirline for twenty minutes and scored twotries. Unfortunately, the final result wasa 13-13 draw (three particulardecisions by the referee resulted in afew tries being disallowed). The replaywas scheduled for Lakelands Park and, once again, Mary’s allowed themselvesgo down by 10 points but as beforethe team rallied and scored two tries toget back into the game. Unfortunately,it was not enough. Mary’s sufferedanother disallowed try and thenNewbridge pounced on a loose ball to

score the deciding try – final score 18-11.

The team were extremely disappointedbut showed great character and spiritby deciding to go on and enter thePlate Competition. Here, theircampaign was more successful – en route to emerging winners, theMary’s side had decisive wins overCastleknock, Wesley, Clongowes andfinally Belvedere in the finals. So theyear ended with a trophy and wasdeemed a successful and enjoyableseason. The Team’s great spirit wasenhanced by the support given by allthe parents throughout the year.Special thanks go to the coaching staffof Gordon Smyth, Alex Kelly and Rory“Nuggets” O’Connor for all their hardwork and dedication in training theteam. This year St. Mary’s werethe winners of this coveted trophy. Thecompetition was played firstly on aleague basis. At the end of this articlethere is a list of the members of thesquad, each one of whom made a veryvaluable contribution towards thewinning of the Cup. We were unbeatenin this league and went through to thefinal against Willow Park, played inStradbrook, the headquarters of theBlackrock Rugby Club.

It was a very exciting game, with greatfootball played by two well trainedteams. Niall Rynne, the reporter for allSt. Mary’s RFC matches described it as

In the forwards St. Mary’s had somegreat players. The front row of WilliamMassey, Tomás Young and Eoin Boylewhich started the final formed, indeed,a much to be feared trio. The captainEoghan Culligan was certainly man ofthe match, but ably assisted by ConorSheridan, Jack Levins, Adam Corcoran,Gavin Wynne. A remarkable feature ofthe final was seeing Pearse McCluskeywho had played on the thirds allseason taking his place on the team athalf-time. Colm Godfrey who came onat half time became a tower ofstrength in the forwards. In all it was agreat team effort. In the backs, JoeBarnes was strong and noted for hisability to clear his lines. Basketball Review 2006-2007

Basketball in St. Mary’s experienced itsmost successful year in 2006/7 sincethe sport’s reintroduction three yearsago. There were students from first tosixth year participating in the sportwith the under 19’s enjoying the mostsuccess.

The Juniors had a slow start to theyear as new players learned tocooperate with each other. Aftersuffering early season losses theybattled back, under captain DaireHorgan, until they were narrowlydefeated by a strong Colaiste Eoin sideto end their season.

The Seniors were entered in the DublinLeague before Christmas and, under

the guidance of coaches Mr. JoeyBoylan and Mr. Nicholas Fitzsimons, overcame some tough opposition toreach the quarter finals.

Here the team, which was comprisedmainly of fourth and fifth yearstudents, were faced by a highly skilledHartstown outfit. Even without theircaptain Stephen Culligan, the 19scompeted admirably but, in the end, narrowly missed out on a semi–finalplace.

The new year brought moreopportunities for the Seniors as theinaugural under 19 Dublin Plate Blitzwas held in the Fr. Barry Hall. St.Mary’s, along with St. MacDara’s,Tallaght C.S. and Coolmine C.S. wouldcompete.

The competition was played in around-robin format followed by semi-finals and a final. St. Mary’s emergedfrom the group as top seed havingcomfortably beaten the other threeschools. In the semi-final they werepaired with an ever-improving Tallaghtside. The Seniors produced anotherstunning performance to set the stagefor a thrilling final against CoolmineCommunity School.

Coolmine took an early seven pointlead as the Mary’s team was caughtcold. To their credit, none of the teamconceded defeat and when MichaelFitzsimons swished a difficult three

point shot from the baseline to narrowthe gap, a comeback seemed likely.

Such was the case and St. Mary’s,aided by some good inside play fromDaire Horgan and Ronan Lennon, secured a slender victory and with ittheir first piece of silverware sincebasketball was reintroduced to theschool in 2003.

School President Fr. Flavin was onhand to present the runners-up andwinners medals, along with the Plateto the St. Mary’s captain StephenCulligan.

6th Annual Union Business LunchThe 6th Annual Union BusinessLunch on Friday the 20th ofApril saw even greater numbersreturn to our popular newhome at The Four SeasonsHotel Ballsbridge. Our guestspeaker was past pupil NiallCogley, Setanta Ireland’s CEOand former Director of Sport atRTÉ. For those of us who find ithard enough to wrestle full control ofthe remote, this was a real lesson inIrish sporting passion and financialbravery.

Union Sports Day –Sunday 25th March 2007We had a total of 7 teams turning upwith most squads bringing some subs aswell, so there were about 70 past pupilstaking part on a great spring day. Theteams were split into 2 grids. Group “A”consisted of the current 6th Years, theclass of 2006, class of 2005 and class of2004. Group “B” was made up of theclass of 2003, 2001 and of a“mixum/gatherum” group called theMavericks. The final game was a fittingfinale. In a match played in the best ofspirits the “form” team from the class of2003 upset both the bookies and theyoung pretenders by defeating the 6thyears 2-1, skill overcoming stamina onthis occasion.

Annual Union DinnerOne of the highlights in anyUnion calendar year is theAnnual Dinner in the College. This year was particularlyspecial as it was the firstDinner to be staged in themodern and spacioussurrounds of the Fr. Barry Hall.

quick to point out to our guests that itmust have been one of the largest PastPupil Dinners ever staged. The Class of1966 (organised by Robin Bailey) hadover 20 class members marking their 40years out, some of whom travelled fromoverseas to be there.

Union Golf Outing – 24th May 2007,Edmondstown Golf ClubWe were extremely lucky with theweather this year and for the secondyear in a row we graced the turf ofEdmondstown Golf Club. The UnionCup was won this year by Aiden Daly, playing out of Kilternan (Hcp. 13) witha great score of 40 points. The PastPresident’s prize was won by FrankDowling, Grange G.C. (Hcp. 20), score35 points. Fr. John Flavin showed howaccurate he is in winning the “nearestthe pin” prize. A novelty prize this year

St. Mary’s College Past Pupils’ Union 2006-2007

ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2007 97

was the Class/Year prize awarded to theclass that had the best combined scoreover three cards. This proved anenjoyable and fun addition to theserious singles competition. The Classof 1994 – Kevin Henry, Conor Ridgeand Eugene Stronge with a total of 108points came out on top... well done toall the prizewinners.

School Graduation Ceremony 2007The Union co-hosted the CollegeGraduation evening for the parents, guardians and students of the class of2007 on the evening of May 26th at theFather Barry Hall. The evening startedwith a concelebrated Mass at theCollege Chapel. After the Mass, thosepresent retired for an excellent mealserved in the Father Barry Hall. ThePrizes for the students of 6th Year forthe academic year were presentedthereafter. In addition to awardspresented for studies and for academicachievement, the students receivedprizes and accolades foraccomplishments in a huge range ofdiverse sports and extra-curricularactivities. It seems that the studentsleaving school are well equipped tomeet the challenges of life in themodern age. The Union can bejustifiably proud of the ongoingachievements of the College.

Past Presidents’ DinnerThe Past Presidents’ Dinner was stagedat the United Services club in St.Stephen’s Green on the evening of May18th. By a happy coincidence it fell onthe same evening and at the samevenue as the 50 year out reunion of theclass of 1957 arranged largely by BobHughes, himself a past President of theUnion but therefore conflicted on theevening in question in terms ofloyalties! Bob did an admirable job notonly in getting his class mates togetherbut also in attempting to attend bothdinners at the same time! In all some18 Past Presidents attended.

Union Finances 2006-2007We are happy to report that ourfinances are in a strong position. Oursubs continue to rise with a healthyamount of new members joining everyyear. The sub ensures the futuresurvival of your Union. For over 10years the sub has been at a veryreasonable €25.39. This year thecommittee has decided to increase it to€30. It will be increased by €5 per yearfor the next 3 years until it is €45. Thiswill bring us in line with other unionsand will ensure we have adequateresources to run the Union.

Obituary ListIn recent months we are aware of thedeaths of the following past-pupils:DIARMUID O’DONOVAN,CHARLIE CULLENGERALD FEARON andFR. MICHAEL McGLADER.I.P.Other deaths may not have come to ournotice. To all who are bereaved, however, we offer our sincerest andprayerful sympathy.

Mock InterviewsOn Monday 26th March the mockinterviews took place in the school. Thisyear Kevin Lewis decided to conduct allthe interviews on the one night whichproved to be a great success. Therewere over 30 past pupils interviewing.

The Lorcan Gogan Speaking ContestThe Lorcan Gogan debate, whichhistorically took place in the form of acontest between past and presentpupils of the College, has been indecline. During the year the Committeedecided that the event be “re-invented,re-modeled and re-vitalised” in theform of a public speaking competitionbetween current students of theCollege. The competition in its newformat took place on the afternoon of

Thursday, the 29th of March. Theadjudicating panel was made up ofBrian Fanning (Past President), PatShaffrey (Past President) and RichardByrne (President Elect). Thecompetition was open to any studentfrom Transition Year, 5th Year or 6thYear who wished to part take. Tencommitted students rose to thechallenge in the Father Barry Hallconcerning the issue of GlobalWarming. After deliberation theadjudicating panel awarded the LorcanGogan Memorial Prize to DeclanHarmon of 6th Year and a variety ofother prizes were awarded on merit, notonly to the speakers but also to certaincontributors from the floor.

Junior Function – 28th December ’06The annual Past Pupils Junior Functiontook place on December 28th at itsnow traditional home of the DroppingWell in Milltown. A great evening washad by everybody downstairs in theBank and many thanks again to CharlieChawke and his staff for theircontinued support of this event and to

the Rugby Club and the College, bothof whom once again made a generouscontribution to the evening.

Table QuizThis year’s table quiz took place in theusual setting of the upstairs bar in St.Mary’s Rugby Club. It was held a fewweeks earlier than previous years andthat may have had a bearing on thereduced numbers taking part. In total,26 teams of 4 participated in whatturned out to be (for most teams!) aclose contest. After a break of a coupleof years, we welcomed back CiaranO’Donnell as Quizmaster and he did afine job. In the end the winners by justtwo points were a very determinedteam of legal eagles from GleesonMcGrath Baldwin Solicitors.
