Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 12, 2018

I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.

— John 6:51

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the an-gel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Je-sus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvel-ous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all.

First Reading - Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. Second Reading - Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love. Gospel - Jesus said, “I am the living bread; whoever eats this bread will live forever”.

The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven.

Wednesday, August 15 Holy Day of Obligation !

Masses will be held: Tuesday - 7pm (English)

Wednesday - 9 am (English) Wednesday - 7pm (Polish)

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven

Mary died because it was the will of God that she might be in all things like her Divine Son. Though death may be for many a dreaded ex-perience, it was not for Mary, because her heart was with her treasure - in heaven. Soon after her death, the body of the Blessed Virgin was reunited with her soul and assumed into heaven. We call it Assumption rather than as-cension, because she was assumed or taken up by her Divine Son. Our Lord did not allow the pure and sinless body of His Mother to suffer the decay that follows death. Another reason for the Assumption is that Sacred Scripture had foretold the triumph of Mary over sin: by her Immaculate Conception, she triumphed over original sin and by her Assumption she tri-umphed over death.

Be Happy Today . . . . . . . . . . . . Decide to be happy today, to live with what is yours – your family, your business, your job, your luck. If you can’t have what you like, maybe you can like what you have. Just for today, be kind, cheerful, agreeable, re-sponsive, caring and understanding. Be your best, dress your best, talk softly, look for the bright side of things. Praise people for what they do and don’t criticize them for what they cannot do. If someone does something stupid, forgive and forget. After all, it’s just for one day. Who knows, it might turn out to be a nice today.
