In today’s gospel, Jesus posed two questions about himself to his disciples. The first was, “Who do people say I am?” and the second was, “Who do you say that I am?” One was about what oth-ers thought about Jesus, and the second was about the disciples’ personal feelings towards Je-sus. Down through the ages, people have said many things about Jesus. The disciples mentioned some of what people thought Jesus to be. The crowds thought him to be one of the prophets or, specifically, Elijah or John the Baptist. In our modern world, there are still many opinions about Jesus today. There are some who think he is a great man. Some others think he is a great proph-et. Some think he is a created being, and there are others who think he is not as great as he is made to be. Other people may have their opinions of who Jesus is, but what really matters is

what the follower of Jesus thinks he is. And so Jesus posed the more challenging question to his disciples: “Who do you say that I am?”

Peter was led by the Spirit to recognize Jesus as the Messiah, the savior of the world. He is the one who came to call us into God’s family. Our answer to this question must go beyond what the Catechism teaches or what the Bible says. The answer must take flesh and come from the personal experience we have of Jesus Christ. Jesus is our savior, our God and friend who is willing to support, encourage and challenge us every day. Each of us needs to answer that question every day. It is when we are able to say Jesus is the Christ, the messiah, that we can truly become his followers.

Following Jesus is not a seasonal thing. This is what the Church is reminding us during this ordinary time of our liturgical year. By “ordinary,” we mean the normal, usual and routine way of life for the Christian. What is this ordinary way for the Christian? Jesus says today: “If anyone wishes to be a follower of mine, he must deny him-self and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Taking up our cross is not something for Lent, East-er, Advent or Christmas only. Neither is it when we feel like it. Jesus says it is a daily event. Summer is here, stu-dents are out of school, parents are taking time off work in order to take their kids on vacation. Most vacations are well planned out. People book their flights, reserve hotels and plan activities and places to visit. It is im-portant for Christian families to include church in such plans. Do not take a vacation from church life as God does not take vacation from your life! In the Christian journey, there is no vacation.

The cross is about sacrifice and so is the Christian life. The cross is dying to self and living for others. It is about doing the kind of things that Christ himself would do, wherever and whenever we can. This cross is the commit-ments we have to make daily as Christians. Our crosses may be the challenges that we face daily in speaking the truth and caring for the weak. To carry the cross demands giving ourselves selflessly without counting the cost. With or without Christianity, pain and suffering are there in the life of any human being, but Christianity helps us to make sense of or extract meaning from them. As we offer up our pains and sufferings with that of Jesus on the Cross, they become salvific just as Christ’s.

We celebrate Father’s Day today, and so I wish all our fathers a Happy Father’s Day! It is a day to remember and appreciate the sacrifices made by our fathers and all the father figures in our lives. We thank them for all the sac-rifices they made and are making for their families. Good parenting demands great sacrifice. The role of the fa-ther in the family cannot be overemphasized. Many fathers provide, protect and support their families, and to-gether with their wives and children, form a stable and a healthy family. In our world full of imperfections, there are families who struggle without a father in the house, and we have some men who father children but run away from their responsibilities as real fathers. Today’s celebration calls us to deep appreciation for fathers who are working hard for their families. It could also bring back memories for those who have lost their fathers. May God console those who have lost their fathers and grant eternal rest to the dead. Thank you, fathers, for your love and care for your children! We appreciate you! Happy Father’s Day!

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Today, as he often does, Luke portrays Jesus “praying in solitude” (Luke 9:18). The Jubilee Year of Mercy invites us to redis-cover the value of silence as the prayerful setting in which to reflect on the ways in which God’s mercy transforms our lives, in order to make mercy the heart of our own lifestyle. But in a line that sounds odd, Jesus “rebuked” his disciples “and di-rected them not to tell anyone” (9:20–21) after they professed their faith in Jesus as “the Christ of God” (9:20). Jesus challeng-es us also to profess our faith not by what we say, but by what we do: take up our own cross daily (9:23) and “bear one an-other’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). Our gratitude for God’s mercy toward us should make us instruments of God’s mercy to-ward all. Then, as Zechariah prophesies in today’s first reading, the fountain of God’s mercy will open to purify the whole world from the sin and selfishness that cause suffering and sorrow to so many (Zechariah 13:1).

Word of Life

“Clinical labels may describe some aspects of an individual's ‘functioning,’ but they don't tell the whole sto-ry. … It's like looking at a stained-glass window… From the inside…with the sun shining through it, the effect can be brilliant. From inside our family, love illuminates our life with Charlie.* What may seem dreary to others, perhaps even unbearable, is actually filled with beauty and color.”

PRAYER WARRIORS NEEDED FOR THE 1 CHURCH 1 DAY PRAYER VIGIL PROGRAM

This program provides prayer for our community and the communities around us 24 hours a day,

365 days a year. Think of it as a canopy or umbrel-la of continuous prayer that protects us from evil and temptations. KSBJ Radio is the program spon-sor, and the Humble, Kingwood, and Atascocita

areas are the pilot cities for this program which is rapidly expanding to many other cities. Eventually, it is hoped to have our entire nation and, indeed, the entire world covered with continuous prayer. This program can only be successful if two major

points are observed:

1. Churches of all denominations and faiths must unite in a common cause in prayer. So far, we have 38 churches participating in the King-wood, Humble, and Atascocita area.

2. Prayer warriors must keep their commitment to pray during their assigned hour and must do their very best to pray the intentions distributed to them while praying for an entire hour. Satan will find and take advantage of any hour that is not prayed to disrupt and potentially cause our “umbrella” to fail. We can only be as strong as our weakest link, and each of us is a link in the chain of continuous prayer.

Many of you already know the power of prayer and find it easy and in fact find renew faith during

prayer. The Rosary, Adoration, Novenas, and the like are examples of prayer times and are easily

adapted when praying the 1 Church 1 Day intentions.

Just one hour a month from every member of our dedicated and committed team of prayer warriors

is all that is required for this program. Each Church has been assigned a specific day for pray-er. St. Mary Magdalene has the 3rd Friday of every

month for our 24-hour period.

Please consider if you are willing and able to join the St. Mary 1 Church 1 Day prayer warriors in this incredibly challenging and rewarding pro-

gram. Our Lady has said that prayer can save the world, so let us begin by saving one community at a time by each of us praying for one of the hours during our 3rd Friday 24-hour vigil every month!

Opportunity for Young Adult Catholics to Travel to Rome and Assisi

Shannon Deitz of St. Martha’s parish in Porter is or‐ganizing a young adult Catholic travel program to

Assisi, Florence, and Rome in May of 2017 and invites you to join her and Fr. Richard McNeillie. This is a

program that weaves together visits to places of great historical and religious significance with opportuni‐ties to enjoy the warm hospitality, food, and culture

of the Italians. We will walk in the footsteps of earlier generations of Christians who have traveled to Rome

to visit the tombs of the great apostles Peter and Paul, who have wandered through the mystical streets of

Assisi to learn from St. Francis and St. Clare, and who journeyed to Florence to see the masterpieces of Mi‐chelangelo, Brunelleschi, and other Renaissance vi‐

sionary artists.

Our accommodations are centrally located so that during the built‐in free time, we will have a chance to explore the piazzas, cafés, shops, and restaurants that make Italy such a satisfying destination. Join us as we

travel across borders to make new friends, connect with our faith heritage, and learn from the men and women who have made Rome, Florence, and Assisi

the great art and cultural capitals of the world.

MS and HS “Youth Night”: In order to cele-brate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 19th and “Summer Study” on Thursday, June 23rd , there will be NO youth events this coming week.

Next week: We will have a high school youth event on Sunday, June 26th from 6:30pm - 8:00pm in the Youth Room. No middle school on Thurs-day, June 23rd, due to “Summer Study.”

2016- 2017 Formation / CCE Registration: The final “early registration” event has come and gone! If you still need to sign up your child(ren) for next year’s for-

mation and sacrament preparation classes, please make plans to attend the “regular regis-tration” event on August 27th from 2:00pm - 5:00pm in the FLC. This day will be the FI-NAL opportunity to register for CCE before classes begin {the week of September 18th}. Please note that CCE tuition is expected to be paid in full at the time of registration, though no one will be turned away due to an inability to pay… All you need to do is talk to Fr. Felix before August 27th, and he can approve a tuition waiver. For those who miss the August 27th event, we will accept “late registrations” on Sunday, October 2nd… Absences will accrue for students who miss classes due to late registra-tion.

Archdiocesan Youth Conference: Please hurry… Time is running out for you to sign up for the largest diocesan high school youth event in the United States… AYC! If you are an incoming 9th grader through 12th grade graduating HS senior, you can attend Cardinal DiNardo’s “family reun-ion” for HS youth – the Archdiocesan Youth Conference (AYC). AYC is a gathering of over 3,000 youth and youth leaders for a weekend of music, prayer, Mass, fun, and workshops at the George R. Brown Convention Center and Hilton Americas Hotel in downtown Houston from July 29th – 31st. Friday, July 1st is the “late” registra-tion deadline… The cost to attend is $210 per per-son; please contact Carissa in the Youth Office. If you would like to provide financial assistance for a youth to attend AYC, a gift in any amount would be greatly appreciated.

“Summer Study” CCE: Week #1 of our very popular summer Formation intensive begins this Monday, June 20th – Friday, June 24th (6:30pm – 9:00pm). Kinder - 7th Grade will be held in the 2-story Education Building; 8th Grade - High School will be held in the St. Paul Center. Don’t forget to bring your assigned snacks! As a reminder, please do not park or drop-off / pick up students on Ferguson Street… doing so places our children - and all drivers - in an unsafe environment. Thanks for your help.

Calling All Catechists: Are you on fire for your faith? Well, then, don’t hide your light under a bushel! Share that light of faith with our students. The only way we can offer the CCE classes needed by so many families in our parish is through the generous stewardship of our adult catechists. You do not have to be a professional teacher to be a catechist. All you need is a love of the Catholic faith and a heart for children. If you are interested in helping teach one of the elementary, middle school, or high school classes, please contact Mike or Ginger for additional information about serving as a catechist.

Tampoco es cuan-do tenemos ganas.
