ST. MARY CHURCH CHILLICOTHE, OHIO November 19, 2017

TODAY’S LITURGY

FIRST READING: Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31 SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 GOSPEL: Matthew 25:14-30

Proverbs’ praise of a “worthy wife” is obviously told from the man’s point of view. This in no way diminishes the good she does. No one knows when the Book of Proverbs was pieced together although it is attributed to Solomon. It represents the collective wisdom of long stretches of years.

One Jewish commentary notes: “This is not one specific woman but an ideal, a paragon of female virtues.” The praise heaped upon the “worthy wife” is easily done because of her many works, which contributed to the happy home she provided for her husband and her children. Jewish tradition has the husbands recite this to their wives on Sabbath evening. Whether it is meant as a reminder or expressed as a prayer is not altogether certain. What is certain is that no such prayer is uttered about husbands.

In Hebrew this acrostic poem is one in which each verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The entire poem runs from verse 10 through verse 31. So it is easy to see that we have only snippets included here. It is used often in Jewish funerals and occasionally at Christian funerals.

Certainly this woman is praised for her many talents which add to the economy of the household. Besides all the work she does, she is also care-giver, provider and full of kindness. Most of the praise is for her work around the household. Her kind is well recognized in every parish in today’s world, with all the added job descriptions required of wives today. Someone should undertake the task of updating this poem in praise of the worthy wife and at the same time add one about the responsible husband.

Responsibility provides the segue to today’s Gospel about the servants entrusted with the care of a man’s property. He was obviously a wealthy man because the talent was a lot of money, having probably the same impact on them as billions (or trillions) would have on us today.

The main point of the parable is to stress responsible service. Those who handle service well are given greater opportunity for more service: “Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come share your master’s joy.” This is said to both the one who doubled the five talents and the one who doubled the two talents.

This is the kind of thing people hope for when they invest in the stock market. To double their money is a boon. All too often these days, it seems, we hear of those who are lucky if they get back their original investment. More often than not they lose large parts of the investment. It is not hard to imagine the man in the parable being upset with the servant who buried his one talent, rather than invest it. He is called wicked and lazy, but the original investor was probably thinking far worse.

Those who were rewarded and praised were the ones who did what they were supposed to do. The one who was afraid of the investor was the one who failed in his task. So the parable is not about investing but about acting responsibly with what God has given us. God expects a return on the original investment.

In the end it is the record of our responsible service that will pay dividends. Time and again Scripture remind us that it is not how much stuff we have accumulated that matters. What matters is what we do with what we have been given, by God.
