Lift High the Cross On Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 8:35am, the Cross was replaced on top of St. Mary steeple. It was glorious! The previous day in the presence of a handful of parishioners, I had the privilege and joy of blessing this Cross before it went back up to the steeple. I was amazed at how big and tall the Cross actually is from close up. It is over 6 feet tall! The placing of the Cross atop the steeple of our parish church is the culmination of months of construction and work by Krause Construction. We thank them for a job well done.

Seeing the Cross once again occupy its place of prominence at the very peak of St. Mary Church was a magnificent sight. It is a luminous sign of hope to see the Cross on the steeple sparkling with brilliance, proclaiming Christ’s victory over sin and death, and casting its holy shadow over the entire city of Algoma and beyond. As St. Paul says so well, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (I Cor 1:18).

The events of this past week, brought to mind the words of the famous hymn “Lift High the Cross” composed in 1887 by the English composer George William Kitchin. The second and third verses of that hymn are especially poignant. “Led on their way/ by this triumphant sign/ the hosts of God/ in conquering ranks combine.“ “Each new-born follower/ of the Crucified/ Bears on their brow/ the seal of him who died.”

As we sign ourselves each day with ‘the sign of the Cross,’ may we show forth in our daily lives Christ’s victory over sin and death. We do this when we denounce violence and indifference, reject hatred and racism, stand in solidarity with all those wounded, crushed, broken and exploited.

We Adore You O Christ and We Praise You. Because by Your Holy Cross, You have Redeemed the World.

Father Amadi
