This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany or how the three Magi came to visit the newborn Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh as we hear in today’s Gospel. The gold represents how Christ was a servant King, the frankincense how he is the eternal High Priest and the myrrh how he would sacrifice his life for all of us. These three gifts were a way that each Magi was blessing or affirming part of Jesus Christ’s identity and mission. This is also a time of year associated with asking God’s blessing upon our homes. We have been reflecting during this Christmas Season on how God desires to bless us so we can live out the identity and mission that he has given to us. Our homes should be places where we grow in this blessing of our God given identity and mission. When we do a yearly Epiphany blessing in our homes then we invite God’s blessings into our homes in a special way during that year. We ask that in 2018 that we would continue to grow in our God given identity and mission. By inviting in God’s blessing into our homes then we also seek to be more intentional in blessing those who live in our homes rather than cursing them. The image of light is used in the 1st Reading and our homes should shine forth with God’s blessing. This is why during the Christmas Season we decorate our houses with lights. However, we also need to remember that when we live out our God given identity and mission that we become the light to the world that God intended. If all of us shone in the way that God created us to shine then there would be no more darkness in the world. The three Magi in the Gospel literally followed the light of the Christ Child to find him. Just as they were led by a star to find Christ so do we act as that star when we lead others to Christ. The special way we lead others to Christ is in the intentional way that we seek to bless them daily.

I am very grateful to all those who helped make our Christmas liturgies a success. Thank you to all our deacons, ushers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and altar servers. I wish to offer a special thanks to all of our choirs including our Midnight Christmas Choir and Children’s Christmas Choir. Thank you to Kevin Kapchinski, Thomas Dale, Nick Rios, Bill Green, Tara Tower and Michele Van Nostrand for all their hard work with these choirs. It takes a lot of people to help our liturgies flow well so I am very grateful to all of our staff and volunteers! I encourage you to use the home blessing prayers and blessed chalk you will receive this weekend to bless your homes. We also have the home blessing prayers included in this weekend’s bulletin. May you know of Christ’s blessing in your homes this Epiphany! Fr. Charlie

LA EPIFANIA DEL SENOR 7 DE ENERO DE 2018
“Lumen requirunt lumine”.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM,

EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING WITH CHALK
It has been a tradition in the Catholic Church to hand out blessed chalk at the Masses for Epiphany, and then use the blessed chalk
as part of blessing one’s home in the New Year.
The home blessing can be done as follows:
Use the blessed chalk to write: 20+C+M+B+XX
above the doorways:
20XX for the year; C, M, B for the 3 Magi – Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar – and for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for “May Christ Bless this House.”
As you are writing, pray the following prayer:
Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the
guidance of a star. Bless this house
and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ,
that our concern for others may reflect your love.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
