DEVOTIONS FOR THIS WEEK: The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents Christ's divine love for us. A human element of who Jesus is. The devo-tion especially emphasizes the com-passion and long-suffering of the heart of Christ towards humanity. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is not only radiant with love for us, but it is a wounded heart, encircled by thorns,
and pierced—the heart we tried to kill, a love we tried to extinguish. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary focuses on Mary’s love for God, her maternal love for her son, Jesus, and encourages us to imitate her humility, gratitude, obedience, and adoration. The roses surrounding Mary’s heart represent her sinlessness and purity, sweetness, and new life. The sword piercing the top of the heart represents her redemptive suf-fering as a “spiritual crucifixion.”

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi. This feast dates back to the year 1263 when a Eucharistic miracle was wit-nessed in the town of Bolsena, Italy. A priest named Peter of Prague, who was having problems believing in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, was celebrating Mass. He had barely uttered the words of Jesus spoken at the consecration, “Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body … Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my Blood …,” when real blood began to trickle from the consecrated host onto the white cloth called a corporal which is on the altar. He immediately went to see Pope Urban IV who was in the neighboring town of Orvieto at the time. The Pope ordered the host and corporal bearing the stains of blood to be brought to him. With archbishops, cardinals and other Church dignitaries in attendance, the Pope met the procession and, amid great pomp, had the relics placed in the cathedral, where they continue to be reverently enshrined and venerated to this very day. The next year Pope Urban IV issued a papal bull instituting the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, and instructed the great St. Thomas Aquinas to compose the liturgy and music for the feast, which continues to be celebrated with grand Eucharistic processions in Orvieto and Bolsena and around the world.
I cannot emphasize enough how important is our belief in the real presence of Jesus, his Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Eucharist. It is a belief which distinguishes us and sets us apart from many of our Christian brothers and sisters in the faith who view the Eucharist and the reception of Holy Communion to be just a symbol. But as the great Catholic writer Flannery O’Connor, when told by a well-meaning associate trying to make conversation at a party what a lovely symbol the Eucharist is, responded, “If it is only a symbol, then I say, to hell with it!”
No mere symbol, not just a remembrance, when a validly ordained priest calls down the Holy Spirit and, speaking in the person of Jesus, says the words of consecration at Mass, ordinary bread and wine becomes transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We know this because this is what Jesus said. Jesus is God, and what God says, is. As one of the great communicators and theologians of our day, Bishop Robert Barron, explains, words have power and can effect reality. He uses the example of a baseball umpire who, when he pronounces a runner to be out, whatever the players or fans might think, that runner is indeed out (or at least that was the case in the days before video replay). Bishop Barron also uses the analogy of a Police Officer who if, as a duly deputized officer of the law, says to a person, “You are under arrest,” that person is under arrest, no matter how much he or she might protest. That being the case, how much more can the words of God who said, “Let there be light,” and there was light, or who said to the paralytic, “stand, pick up you mat, and walk,” and the paralytic stood up and walked, turn ordinary bread and wine into his Body and Blood by saying, “This is my Body …This is my Blood.”
Although the bread continues to look and taste like bread and the wine continues to look and taste like wine, we believe that once the priest utters those words first spoken by Christ at the Last Supper during the consecration at Mass, those substances truly become at the deepest level of reality the Body and Blood of Christ. St. Thomas Aquinas called this miracle transubstantiation. That is why we must receive the Eucharist so reverently, reserve it in the tabernacle so securely, and purify the vessels which hold our Lord’s Body and Blood so carefully. That is why coming to Mass each Sunday is so important, so that nourished by Our Lord’s Body and Blood in Holy Communion, we too can be transformed.

Listening Sessions on Racism: Since the tragic & horrific events of Charlottesville, Virginia just one year ago, we have seen the effect &
impact that racism has had on our society. The Bishops of the United States have formed a committee to focus
& address the sin of racism. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop DiMarzio has formed a commission on Racism & Social Justice. The goal is to deal with social & religious problems that racism in all of its form presents to us. The commission would like to hear from all the faithful of the Diocese. We will be hosting two open listening sessions in Brooklyn &
Queens for all the faithful to attend. These sessions are meant to be an opportunity for us to share how racism
has impacted our parishes & the church as a whole. The sessions will be: Sat., June 16 at 11:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi/ St. Blaise, 319 Maple St.,
