Thank you Fr. John for your four years of dedicated service to our parish.

In 2014, after ordaining me as a priest, Archbish-op José Gomez as-signed me to serve for four years as an associ-ate pastor at St. Marga-ret Mary parish. The time has flown by; and I have enjoyed my time

here. Now the archdiocese has given me a new assignment. Starting on July 2nd, I will begin serving as an associate pastor at St. Denis parish in Diamond Bar, which is on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County, south-west of Pomona. I still remember my first Sunday here at St. Margaret Mary. I had some trepidation because I didn’t know anyone at the parish, and I was not yet comfortable being a priest. On that first Sunday, I spoke at every Mass, shook hands with about 1,000 people, and chatted with parishioners at a special reception for me in Hegarty Hall. Everyone was so welcoming and happy to see me. Your enthusiasm wiped away all of my fears, and made me feel much more comfortable about my first parish assignment. In fact, everyone at St. Margaret Mary deserves a great deal of credit because you actually taught me how to be a priest. In the seminary, my classmates and I learned the fundamentals of priestly ministry, but our first parish assignment is where we put that book learning into practice in the real world of a real parish. My time at St. Margaret Mary has been challenging and rewarding; and I am a much better priest because of you. And so, as I leave, I would like to thank all of the members of the St. Margaret Mary community—the priests (Fr. Paul and Fr. Mari-nello); the deacons and their wives (Dan and Laurie, Craig and Anne Marie, and Che-

to and Betty); the members of the parish staff; the parish’s lay leaders; and especially all of you parishioners. Thank you for your love, support, and encouragement during the past four years. Of course, I will miss you greatly. But you will always have a special place in my heart and in my life—because St. Margaret Mary is where I truly learned how to be a priest. Thank you so much for nurturing my vocation. Through the intercession of St. Marga-ret Mary, please pray for me and for my fu-ture ministry; and I will continue to pray for all of you. Hegarty announced that, during the summer months, the sermon would not be more than five minutes ln duration June 26, 1960—The parish held on Open House and blessing for the recently completed priest’s rectory June 27, 1982—The parish welcomed The Pilgrim Fri-ars, a group of Dominican priests and brothers, who led the music at the 5pm Sunday Mass and enter-tained afterwards in an old-fashioned hoe-down June 28, 1965— The Holy Name Society sponsored the first Fireworks Stand, open until July 4th, on Western Avenue and 262nd Street June 28, 1982— The marble mosaic was completed along the back wall of the altar in church, a gift of the Holy Name Society. June 29, 1959— Holy Name Society held its first par-ish trip to a Dodgers baseball game at the LA Colise-um. Bus and ticket price is $3.75. Event was open to men and boys only. June 29, 1959—Four SMM women were officially certi-fied by Cardinal McIntyre as CCSD teachers. Reli-gious education for public school students began the following September. June 30,2010—Msgr. Patrick Thompson retired as pastor after 16 years of service at the parish. He is succeeded by Msgr. Marc Trudeau July 1, 1964– Father Hegarty announced a new parish fundraiser to replace the annual Bazaar: all parishion-ers were asked to contribute a day’s wage. The first year resulted in $13,421.

SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN

As parents/caregivers, we teach children to say “please” and “thank you,” to play nice-ly, and to respect other adults. It is also key to stress the importance of safety, and let children know that it is okay to be impolite if they feel threatened or scared. Children should know that it’s okay to say “NO” if someone is asking them to do something they don’t feel comfortable doing, and that setting boundaries by saying things like -- “Don’t touch me there,” or “I don’t like that” -- are not rude, but in fact necessary for their safety. En 2014, después de haberme ordenado Como sacerdote, el Arzobispo José Gómez me asignó para servir Durante cuatro años como pastor asociado en la parroquia de San-

ta Margarita María. El tiempo ha pasado volando; y he disfrutado mi tiempo aquí. Ahora la arquidiócesis me ha dado una nueva tarea. Comenzando el 2 de julio, comenzaré a servir como pastor asocia-do en la parroquia de San Denis en Diamond Bar, que se encuentra en el extremo este del Condado de Los Angeles, al suroeste de Po-mona. Todavía recuerdo mi primer domingo aquí en Sta. Margarita María. Tuve cierta inquietud porque no conocía a nadie en la parroquia, y aún no me sentía cómodo siendo sacerdote. Ese primer domingo, hablé en todas las misas, estreché la mano de unas mil personas y con-versé con los feligreses en una recepción espe-cial para mí en el Hegarty Hall. Todos fueron muy acogedores y felices de verme. Su entu-siasmo borró todos mis temores y me hizo sentir mucho más cómoda con mi primera asignación parroquial. De hecho, todos en Sta. Margarita María me-recen una gran cantidad de crédito porque realmente me enseñaron a ser sacerdote. En el seminario, mis compañeros de clase y yo aprendimos los fundamentos del ministerio sacerdotal, pero nuestra primera asignación parroquial es donde ponemos en práctica ese libro de aprendizaje en el mundo real de una parroquia real. Mi tiempo en Sta. Margarita María ha sido desafiante y gratificante; y soy mucho mejor sacerdote por ustedes. Y así, cuando me vaya, me gustaría agradecer a todos los miembros de la comunidad de San-

Hoy celebramos el nacimiento de San Juan Bautista. San Juan Bautista ha sido siempre figura muy simpática en la religiosidad hispa-na. Para los puertorriqueños esta fiesta tiene un significado especial por ser el patrón de la ciudad de San Juan, su capital, filipinos y latinoamericanos se dedican a bau-tizar y remojar alegremente a las personas en este día, ya que como dice el refrán, “en el día de San Juan, toda agua es Jordán.” En Europa había la costumbre de las hogueras de San Juan, porque la fiesta de San Juan anunciaba la llegada del verano. Este día nos encontra-mos a seis meses del día de Navidad. La iglesia celebra hoy el nacimiento de San Juan Bautista. El día 29 de septiembre cele-bramos su martirio y muerte. La iglesia cele-bra tres natalicios de personas, el de Jesús el día de Navidad, el de María el ocho de sep-tiembre, y el de San Juan en este día. Las cele-braciones se refieren a personas que fueron santificadas o santas desde antes de nacer. De los demás santos, la iglesia suele celebrar su muerte que solía llamarse “el nacimiento para el cielo.” San Juan Bautista fue grande desde antes de nacer. Ya en el vientre de su madre, salto de gozo al sentir la presencia de Jesús en el seno de María. Esa alegría de San Juan llegó a su colmo cuando oyó y vio que a través de su predicación y testimonio, la gente se iba en pos de Jesús, San Juan Bautista fue modelo de alegría espiritual porque no buscaba nada para sí mismo; solamente buscaba la gloria de Je-sús. San Juan Bautista, aunque era pariente de Jesús, tuvo que aprender a reconocer a su pri-mo. Tuvo que mirarlo con nuevos ojos. San

Juan Bautista había predicado en línea con el Antiguo Testamento, como lo habían hecho los profetas, sobre la severidad y el juicio de Dios que se acercaba. San Juan Bautista se sorprendió al oír y ver el ministerio de Jesús, todo lleno de milagros, y sobre todo lleno de compasión y de perdón. Por ello, San Juan Bautista envió dos de sus discípulos a entre-vistar a Jesús, y a preguntarle sobre su misión e identidad. San Juan Bautista desde su nacimiento, tenía un futuro fácil y seguro, humanamente hablan-do. Era hijo de un sacerdote judío y podía mi-rar a su futuro como sacerdote en la seguridad y protección del templo de Jerusalén. Pero San Juan, ya desde su juventud renunció a todas las ventajas de su nacimiento. El evangelio nos dice que San Juan vivió en el desierto has-ta su revelación a Israel. El desierto, en térmi-nos bíblico, es el lugar no hay personas que te puedan distraer. Allí uno solamente puede conversar con Dios. San Pablo, después de su conversión, estuvo dos años en el desierto, allí recibió las enseñanzas supe naturales sobre Jesús. San Juan Bautista es una figura muy simpática que recibe gran variedad de títulos en la litur-gia y en la biblia: Es el Precursor del Señor; el mayor entre los nacidos de mujer; el último de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento; el nuevo Elías; el Bautista; el Amigo del Novio; la Voz que clama en el desierto.
