The Importance of Reading and Studying the Bible

Some of you know my story about being away from the Catholic faith and then returning to it a er al-most 20 years. But most of you don’t realize that one of the major reasons why I returned to the prac-

ce of the faith was because I had been reading the Bible every day for almost three years. When I first started reading the Bible, I had no real faith at all. I wasn’t sure that I even believed in God. But despite may lack of faith, I felt called to read the Bible. (I subsequently realized that the Holy Spirit was promp ng me.)

Like many Catholics, I didn’t even own a Bible; and I had to go to a bookstore to buy one. It was over-whelming because there were three shelves filled Bibles; and I didn’t know which one to buy. Alt-hough I was not prac cing the Catholic faith, I s ll considered myself Catholic; and I wanted to make sure that I bought a Catholic Bible. Therefore, I end-ed up buying The Catholic Study Bible, which was published by Oxford University Press.

At first, I tried to read the Bible from cover to cover, star ng with the Book of Genesis and ending with the Book of Revela on. But I quickly discovered that this is not the right way to read the Bible because I got bogged down in Genesis, and stopped reading the Bible for about nine months. Then, I discovered at the back of my Bible a lis ng of all of the daily Mass readings for every day throughout the year; and I started reading the daily readings each day. (Providen ally enough, The Catholic Study Bible is perhaps the only Catholic Bible that lists all of the daily Mass readings.)

When I first started reading the daily Mass readings, I wasn’t sure what to make of them. Some of the readings didn’t make sense; and I had to do extra reading to learn about Israel’s ancient history and to

learn more about the people and events in the Old and New Testaments.

The Bible is the inspired word of God; and its words have an inherent power that can change a person, if the person is open to being changed. And so, unbe-knownst to me, my incipient faith grew slowly and impercep bly day by day as I read the daily Mass readings. And a er almost three years, I reached a

pping point (specifically a prayer experience with the Rosary), which led me to return to the prac ce of the faith.

Frankly, I don’t think that it’s possible to have real faith unless we regularly read, study, and pray with the Bible. Based on my own experience, I strongly recommend reading the daily Mass readings, which can be read in about 5-10 minutes per day. The readings are available online in English and Spanish on the U.S. Bishops’ website (www.usccb.org). On the first page of the website, just click on a date on the calendar for the day’s readings. Then, if you scroll down to the bo om of the page, you can sign up to have the daily readings E-mailed to your in-box every morning. As a bonus, the page also includes a link to a video with an English-language reflec on on the readings by a priest, a religious sister or brother, or someone else.

La importancia de leer y estudiar la Biblia

Algunos de ustedes conocen mi historia de estar alejados de la fe católica y luego volver a ella después de casi 20 años. Pero la mayoría de us-tedes no se dan cuenta de que una de las princi-pales razones por las que volví a la práctica de la fe fue porque había estado leyendo la Biblia to-dos los días durante casi tres años. Cuando em-pecé a leer la Biblia, no tenía fe en absoluto. No estaba seguro de haber creído en Dios. Pero a pesar de la falta de fe, me sentí llamado a leer la Biblia. (Luego me di cuenta de que el Espíritu Santo me lo estaba pidiendo.)

Como muchos católicos, ni siquiera tenía una Biblia; Y tuve que ir a una librería para comprar una. Era abrumador porque había tres estantes llenos de Biblias; Y no sabía cuál comprar. ZAMBIA APPEAL

As of July 5th, 450 families have pledged $109,384.00 to the 2017 Together In Mission Campaign, that means we have 85% of our parish goal of $129,800.00. 22 weeks into this year’s campaign and we con nue to make progress toward our parish commitment. If you are one of the almost 1700 families who have not made a pledge yet, please prayerfully consider joining fellow parishioners in helping our parish meet or exceed its goal. We do need about $20,000 more in pledges to meet our goal. To make a pledge, please fill out a pledge envelope, which can be found in the pew racks or at the parish office; and then return it to the parish via the Sunday collec on baskets. July 10, 1960 - The first Father/Son breakfast was held, sponsored by the Altar Society. July 15, 2010 - A reception was held to welcome our new Pastor, Msgr. Marc Trudeau and Associate Pastors, Fr. Juan Silva and Fr. Bao Nguyen July 15, 2012 - A blessing and dedication of the Sacred Heart Courtyard was held. The cost of the project was $130,000 which was funded primarily thru the sale of pavers. The original goal was to sell 400 pavers, at the time of dedication over 450 pavers had been sold. July 18, 2013 - Two Barque-style stained glass windows that were originally installed in the baptistery of St. Vibana’s Cathedral, are installed in the Holy Family shrine. The windows feature medallions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. July 21, 2013 - The parish holds “An Afternoon in the Pa-tio with Msgr. Marc” to wish him farewell before he be-gins his new assignment as Co-Rector of St. John’s Seminary.

July 14, 2014 - On a visit to County Cork, Ireland, a group of parish pilgrims visits the gravesite of Fr. Hegarty, pastor from 1945-1971. The pilgrims also visited with members of Fr. Hegarty’s family.

LOS FRUTOS DE LA PALABRA. Por Humberto Beltrán

Hoy leemos la conocida parábola del sembra-dor, bien apropiada para un auditorio rural. Las parábolas tienen por fin el estimular a pensar. Servían para cuestionar las opiniones erróneas de la gente que se sentía muy segura de ellas. Jesús quería sembrar dudas en la opi-nión de muchos judíos de su tiempo de que el Reino de Dios iba a llegar de una manera re-pentina y espectacular. Jesús recurre a imáge-nes del mundo rural palestinense, a veces en torno al mar y a veces en torno a la agricultu-ra. La parábola comienza diciendo que puede haber cuatro clases de terreno, o cuatro clases de personas; a veces, puede haber cuatro cla-ses de actitudes dentro de una misma persona. El fruto de la palabra depende de la calidad del terreno, y además, del calor, la lluvia, el viento y otros factores de la naturaleza. Nos dice en primer lugar que hay perso-nas que son como el camino (¡asfaltado, mo-derno!), que no dejan penetrar la semilla; és-tas pueden ser las que se mantienen al margen de las enseñanzas, de los sucesos y de los com-promisos; no se dan por aludidas y no escu-chan, o que escuchan solo con espíritu de cu-riosidad o de crítica; esas personas están en peligro de que vengan “diablos” que les quiten la semilla y acaben sin producir frutos y hasta fuera de la iglesia. Hay otras personas que son como el te-rreno rocoso muy común en todo el mundo, con poca tierra, y que necesitaba ser limpiada de las piedras; con ellas los campesinos solían hacer las cercas con las que rodeaban sus pro-piedades. Como este terreno son las personas superficiales y fácilmente impresionables, a veces entusiastas, pero sin perseverancia, que fácilmente se desaminan y se cansan. Estas personas suelen tener sus propios criterios , prejuicios, opiniones y actitudes duras hacia otros, que les impiden producir frutos de com-pasión y caridad. Hay personas que tienen las espinas de su apego a las riquezas y cosas materiales, pa-siones, comodidades, esperanzas y planes egoístas que impiden que el evangelio produz-ca fruto en ellas. Las riquezas y apego a lo ma-terial es visto, especialmente por San Lucas,

como las espinas que obstaculizan el creci-miento del mensaje de Jesús en el corazón de las personas. Hay quienes son buena tierra que da buen fruto en obras de amor, mucho más de diez o veinte por ciento que era normal en aquel tiempo. El campo necesita el “Agua de Dios”—el Espíritu—que va a ayudar a las per-sonas a producir frutos para Dios, como el agua natural que ayuda a que la hierba sea verde, el limón agrio y la uva dulce, producien-do frutos que deleitan. y que son tan diferentes como las plantas a las que alimenta. El Espíri-tu nos ayuda a producir frutos de amor, a cada cual a su manera, ya que todos somos perso-nas diferentes. Jesús invitaba a sus oyentes a reflexio-nar sobre esta parábola; también nos invita y desafía a nosotros. Es también importante re-cordar que cada uno de nosotros tiene en su corazón las cuatro clases de terreno: tenemos que sanear nuestro terreno, quitando los cami-nos y veredas que se forman cuando damos entrada y cabida en nuestra mente a toda clase de ideas, chismes y novedades; hay que quitar las piedras, durezas, asperidades y prejuicios que llevamos dentro; hay que arrancar las es-pinas de nuestras ambiciones con las que heri-mos a los demás y nos herimos s nosotros mis-mos.

Reflexión.

El Reino de Dios producirá frutos a pe-sar de todos los obstáculos. Aunque a veces parezca que hay más tierra mala que buena, lo cosecha se salvará. La semilla transforma la fisonomía de un campo, haciéndolo verde, re-frescante y agradable; la semilla transforma el campo. ¿Cómo nos ha transformado a nosotros el vivir la palabra de Dios? ¿Somos tierra buena?

To defend human life, above all when it is wounded by illness, is a duty of love that God entrusts to all. We pray especially for baby Charlie Gard and his parents. We pray in particular that those in power may respect life at every stage and condition.

SMM Parish prays to end death by human hands: abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment

In addition to our All Night Adoration on First Friday’s, we now have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during the day in the church. It will begin after the 8:15am mass and continue until 6:45pm. At that time we will have Benediction followed by mass at 7pm.

All Night Adoration will continue in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 8pm.

Please consider spending an hour in prayer either during the day in the church or at night in the chapel.

FAITH FORMATION

Registrations for the Faith Formation pro-gram now open! Please come in to the Faith Formation of-fice between 2pm and 7pm (Monday thru Friday), or Sundays 8am to 2pm to join our Parish Faith Formation sessions. All Faith Formation Programs are a two (2) year process.

·Elementary Faith Formation is for chil-dren from the 1st through 6th grades Sessions open for Saturdays from 9:00 am – 10:30 am and Sundays from 8:30 am – 10:30 am (which includes the 9:30 am Mass & Children’s Litur-gy ·Jr./Sr. High Faith Formation is for youth between 6th and 12th grades Sessions are on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm (which includes the 1st Wednesday Mass ·Confirmation is open for youth between the 9th and 12th grades Sessions are on alternate Sundays, in-clude attending the 5:00 pm Mass

Each week our parish serves hundreds of families through our Christian Service Ministry. Did you know that these families include a total of nearly 250 children? Together, let us help prepare them for a productive school year. Our goal is to supply backpacks and school supplies like, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, binders, line paper, scissors, color pencils, markers etc., to children registered in our program from kindergarten through high school, so all age sup-plies and backpacks for all ages are needed. I am deeply grateful for the wonderful birthday celebration that Fr. Paul and the parish-ioners hosted last Sunday. You made this advancement in years much easier for accept. I will always be grateful that the good Lord, who, in his providence, allowed me to be pastor of St. Margaret Mary parish for 16 years (1978-1994) . Sundays Mass and the cele-brations which followed, brought back so many memories of parishioners, events, and friendships made while living our Catholic faith and growing together in the Lord. Many have gone to heaven, but I am sure they were enjoying the sight of our celebration from their place on high. While I have difficulty remembering names, I saw so many familiar faces at the celebra-tion. When it comes to the young adults who were children in my time, I marvel at their growth. They too, were a special part of what St. Margaret Mary is all about. I will always be grateful for what you have taught me. I mentioned in my remarks that while we come from the seminary prepared in may ways for our role in parish life, it is the people we serve who teach us most and who give our preparation the finishing touch. For being good, faith-filled teachers, I give you thanks. Whatever the future holds for us, I know the priests and the young people coming after us have witnessed the richness of good parish life in your example. I am sure they will pass this on to their children and to those who come to make St. Margaret Mary Parish their spiritual home.
