Hello everyone
P. Mike
Dear friends,
This Wednesday, practicing Catholics throughout the world begin a 40-day retreat called Lent. Its purpose is the conversion of
our church (so that we arrive at Holy Week and Easter with minds and hearts renewed), and to give spiritual accompaniment to
catechumens and candidates preparing for full initiation into Christ.
I hope all parishioners will do something concrete to sanctify these 40 days … for their own
good and the good of the Church throughout the world. To get you thinking, here are some
resolutions people I know have made:
--- no deserts … or no eating between meals … or skipping one meal a day
--- no movies … no phone, or computer, or tv .. at all or for certain hours every day
--- daily or weekly Mass (besides Sunday), stations, Divine Mercy novena, rosary, read
1 spiritual book (or book of the bible) weekly
--- double or triple weekly donation to church, daily alms to Operation Rice Bowl, alms
to some other charity.
Taking Ashes on Wednesday with no intention of observing Lent through some extra practice of prayer, sacrifice and/or
almsgiving … is a bit like putting a wedding ring on your finger with no intention of being faithful to the marriage. Please ask
the Holy Spirit to guide us all into a good and sanctifying Lent.
Peace, All Good! Fr. Mike
