The Pastor’s Corner
“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” — This word of Jesus,
spoken to the man with hearing and speech deficits, presents
another healing story in the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 7. The
dynamics within the story are conveyed by the actions of Jesus. He
chose to stand and be with someone considered unclean and outside
the Law of Moses. Placing his finger into the man’s ear and then,
using spit, Jesus touches the mouth of the man and speaks the
transformative word, “Be opened!” As “In the beginning, God said,
‘Let there be light!’ and so it happened…” so it does here.
Standing together as the Church faces this hierarchical crisis in
leadership, these words must be heard anew. “Be opened!” Tell us, the
faithful members of the Church, …finally, “Who, what, when, and why
did this happen?” Open the files and let in the light of the truth. If
there’s no one and nothing to hide, then: “Be opened!” Like the
man in the Gospel, our Church needs to proclaim the Gospel rather
than issuing carefully worded ‘talking points.’ We need to preach
the Gospel with honesty, transparency, and accountability.
I am very happy to welcome Fr. Bob Hawkins, the recently
retired pastor of St. Luke’s, Barrington. Fr. Bob is one of the finest
priests in the Diocese. He is here to speak to us about supporting
our Senior Priests. These men have served in active parochial
ministry for between 45-50+ years! Our second collection to support
the Priest Retirement Fund will be next week. Thank you in
advance for your support for dedicated men in priestly ministry.
They didn’t cause this scandal; pray for them and support in the
second collection next weekend.
Next Sunday is also Catechetical Sunday. Our parish Faith
Formation Program is headed by Mrs. Bethany Bessette, a teacher at
Woodlawn Catholic Regional School, and, of course, Mr. Charles
Moreira. We thank them and the catechists for their dedication to
the religious formation of our youth. I encourage parents to work
with Bethany and Charlie, and bring your children to Mass as part
of your loving parental responsibilities. It takes an entire parish to
share the faith!
Enjoy the week! ~Monsignor Darcy
Hello and Farewell, Fr. Jonathan!
Most of you never saw him, but Fr. Jonathan, has been
appointed by Cardinal O’Malley as the Judicial Vicar of the
Archdiocese of Boston. He began his appointment on September 4th.
God be with you, Fr. Jonathan.
I now am officially alone at St. Margaret’s. A realistic
evaluation of overall ministry and scheduling at the parish will take
place with input from the Trustees, Parish Council and Finance
Council as we minister together at St. Margaret’s.
DAY OF PRAYER FOR VICTIMS OF ABUSE
I invite you to participate in a day of prayer on Friday,
September 14. The Church will be open for Eucharistic
Adoration from 9 AM to 12 noon. Please consider coming to
intercede for the healing of victims especially of sexual abuse;
repentance in all our lives; and action to discipline the hierarchy
wherever necessary. As I mentioned last week, none of us
should leave the Church on account of our hurt, anger, and
disgust…we’re all dedicated and staying to lead the Church;
supporting our abused brothers and sister, our parish, our
families, and all our great priests.
