Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our Lady of Fatima Visitation Schedule

All parish families are invited to host the “Our Lady of

Fatima” statue for one week during this year of Marian

Devotion in the Diocese of Providence. Here is the

schedule for the statue for the coming month:

We have several weeks available in the coming months.

Please call the rectory (438-3230) to reserve your week.

Thank you!

Daily Rosary—This year, as we celebrate the

centennial of the apparition of Our Lady of

Fatima, Lent provides an ideal time to begin

or renew the practice of praying the rosary.

Please join us, Monday—Friday, at 7:30 a.m. in the church.

Special Lenten Food Drive!

The Bread of Life Food Pantry will once

again hold a special food drive during

Lent. The Pantry specifically requests

donations of canned tuna, with a stated

goal of collecting 2,017 cans of tuna

between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. The 2,017

cans will provide approximately three months’ worth of the

canned tuna inventory needed by the Pantry.

The donations will be gratefully received from the six East

Providence churches that operate the Pantry, as well as

from the community at large. Please note that last year, we

received 2,171 cans! It would be very exciting to meet or

exceed this number in 2017!

The Bread of Life Food Pantry is very grateful for the

kindness of so many generous people and organizations in

the East Providence area who sustain its outreach among

those in need in our community. Please call the office at

Newman Congregational Church at 434-4742 for more

information about the Pantry or visit the Pantry’s website at

EPBreadOfLife.org .

The Pastor’s Page

How many of these are on your

list of things to worry about?

You may recognize some of

these as the beginning of your

worries or you may have other

items on your list. You might be amazed how long it is,

and how long it can get! Is my marriage in trouble?

Should I be “a friend” or “a parent” to my teenagers? How can

I improve my self-confidence? How am I going to pay the

children’s tuition, and the mortgage, and save for retirement? I

don’t think I can repay my student loans? Will my associates

like me at the new job? How will I ever raise the funds to

replace the roof on the school? Should I marry him/her? Should

I move and change jobs? Will someone take care of me when

I’m older and sick? What will happen to my sick child if I die?

When is “enough, enough” in providing for my lazy, indulgent

adult children? Who is going to get all this “stuff” I have when

my life status changes …or ends?

We have stayed awake at night with these real life

situations, and no one is exempt! When you walk out the

front doors of the Church after Mass, take a look across

the street. These worries don’t exist over there. War,

peace, taxes, cars, status, ecclesiastical titles and honors,

or even the price of mussels at the fish store really don’t

matter …do they?

Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday. The

morning Mass (with the school) is at 9:00 a.m., a prayer

service at 12 Noon, and an evening Mass at 5:30 p.m. to

begin “the discipline of Lent.” Lent provides an

opportunity to put the list at the top of this column in

perspective. Cooperating with God’s grace (love)

deepens my response in faith to realize what ultimately

matters…our eternal salvation. We proceed from Ash

Wednesday to Easter; from Ashes to Glory. We can

change and eliminate some worries. Some things we can

only bring to silent, humble, persistent prayer…and then

wait, not with resignation, but with hope in God’s plan

and timing for my life.

Live Lent to the full: attend daily Mass at 8:00 a.m.,

pray with the kids, give generously to the needy perhaps

through the Catholic Charity Appeal, and turn off the

real or the “fake news,” and read something to feed your

soul. Celebrate the possible transformation from worry

to wonder through the free gift of God’s love and mercy.
