Opening Sentences

Officiant You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with saints and members of the household of God. Ephesians 2:19

The Confession

Deacon Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned.I will confess my sins to the Lord,I will not conceal my wrongdoings.

Silence

God forgives us and heals us.

All We need your healing, merciful God:give us true repentance.Some sins are plain to us;some escape us,some we cannot face.Forgive us;set us free to hear your word to us;set us free to serve you.

Officiant God forgives you.Forgive others;forgive yourself.Through Christ, God has put away your sin:approach your God in peace. Amen.

After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying,

“Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing,

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdomand thanksgiving and honorand power and mightbe to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

“For this reason they are before the throne of God,and worship him day and night within his temple,and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.

They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;the sun will not strike them,nor any scorching heat;

We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

This Litany of Saints was edited from one composed around 1979, largely by William MacKaye, former religion editor of the Washington Post,  though some of the images were taken from A Liberation Prayer Book of the Free Church in Berkeley, California; it has been adapted here and there in the subsequent years. The Collect

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us to do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for an Election

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
