“Follow me,” Jesus says to a potential disciple he encounters on his journey to Jerusalem. “Follow me,” Elijah says (in effect) to Elisha as he plowed his field. God’s call is a daunting invitation and demands a wholehearted commitment. Some accept; others cannot bring them-selves to commit. We too are called to be disciples, to live our lives according to the gospel. “Follow me,” Jesus challenges us. How do we respond? To leave everything behind when you set a new course for your life is a dramatic break. Not only to leave it all behind, but to destroy it so that there’s no going back, makes the break even more dramatic. But to leave it behind and destroy it, and in destroying it im-mediately perform the kind of action that puts into practice the mission that determines the rest of your life—that is the most dramatic turnaround possible. This is what Elisha does. He sacrifices his plow and oxen to provide food, not for his family as before, but for the entire people. Elisha has turned immediately to serving “his people,” and using whatever he has at hand to do so.

“The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head” (Luke 9:58). Very true. He was born in a stable, his parents unable to find a

room in an inn. He began his public ministry in his hometown synagogue, only to be driven out

of town by an angry mob. He spent the next three years journeying through Gali-lee and Judea as he preached and gath-ered disciples. He spent the day before he was put to death in a borrowed room in Jerusalem. Making his true home in any one place was never part of his mis-sion. Instead, his home is in each of us, most notably when we gather together in his name and celebrate the Eucharist.

Jesus’ disciples have left their homes as well. In signing on to Jesus’ mission, they have left their families, jobs, and hometowns. They don’t look back either; we never hear of any of them taking a week or two off to return home to attend to unfinished business. Their commit-ment is complete.

completo.

How to Dress for Mass

Stay conservative but examine how others dress. At St. Lawrence we welcome everyone, at all times. We understand that summer is here and with it, it’s scorching Texas heat. We encourage our congregation to “come as you are” or “dress how you choose.” Just keep in mind you’re coming to see the Lord and focus should NOT be on you but on Him and His message.

We humbly remind you that when attending church, it is expected that you dress in a way that reflects the morals and standards of our parish. While standards for dressing have changed over time, we still expect you to wear your best clothing when attending the Mass celebration. Be-fore you make the mistake of offending someone, take the correct steps to make sure that the clothes you wear are appropriate.

If you haven’t been attending church for a long time, you can determine how you should dress based on the major-ity of people around you. At St. Lawrence, dressing cas-ually is completely acceptable, although it is still expected that you dress in your nicest garments when attending Mass. Having nice clothes does not mean you have to spend a lot of money on them; just make sure that they are clean and presentable. • Think modest and conservative when picking out

your outfit. • Do not wear anything that rises above the knee. • Refrain from wearing anything transparent. • Shorts are not appropriate.
