Help the Vulnerable: Urge Elected Leaders to Pass a State Budget
Every 30 seconds someone counts on Catholic Chari es for help. We are now asking for your help. Please lend your voice to advocate for the State of Illinois to end its budget stalemate and pass a budget that cares for the poor and most vul-nerable in our communi es. Catholic Chari es is currently owed more than $25 million by the State of Illinois – a number that grows by at least $2 million per month. Please take me today to call your state elected officials with this simple mes-sage, “I am a voter in your district. I am contac ng you on behalf of the poor and vulnerable people who depend on our state’s safety net of human services, espe-cially the more than 1 million people served by Catholic Chari es of the Archdio-cese of Chicago.” If you do not know who your state representa ve and senator are, please call the State Board of Elec ons at (217) 782-4141 or visit www.elec ons.il.gov and click on “New District/ Official Search.” You can find more informa on and a template advocacy le er at www.CatholicChari es.net on the homepage.

ON RECONCILIATION, RELATIONSHIP, AND A NEW CREATION
Copyright 2016 By John B. Reynolds ([email protected])
We don’t have to look very far to find meaty quotes about new-ness. Consider Henri Nouwen: “Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to
us. Let's not be afraid to receive each day's surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy. It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humanity.” Consider Walt Disney: “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Consider Abraham Lincoln: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” And of course, consider the Apostle Paul: “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.” Thus begins today’s second reading, taken from one of Paul’s letters to the Corinthians. I especially like this reading because by repetition alone, it defines the newness. Paul’s letter is actually in response to the Corinthians, who had been critical of Paul’s ministry. The letter is an appeal to relationship, and reconciliation is ele-mental to relationship. “All of this is from God,” the Apostle writes, “who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.” Get the idea? And just to be sure, Paul throws in the R-word one more time: “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” All of which leads back to a new creation. Perhaps today’s Gospel speaks better to this notion than all of Scripture. Everyone knows the sto-ry. “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.” The younger son forms the contrition in his head before speaking it aloud to his father, and I’m moved each time I encounter this story by the father’s immediate response, directed at a serv-ant: “Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his fingers and sandals on his feet… ” Huh? No reproach. No recrimination. Just unrestricted, unconditional love, “…because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.” It’s hard to dismiss the older son’s anger in response (“…all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders…but when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prosti-tutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.” To this end, I guess, the father’s clemency speaks to God’s boundless mercy beyond all comprehension. And we have the exact same gift of recon-ciliation awaiting us in the confessional: “I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Warm words. Life-giving words. Words of confirmation that we are, indeed, a new creation in Christ.

DEWAYNE HILL VISITS COS
Comedy Magician Dewayne Hill started performing magic at the age of 16. Six months after practicing and perform-ing in the streets of his hometown of Charleston, West Vir-ginia, he started receiving show offers from area churches and local fundraisers. He received the attention of a local TV show producer and was asked to be a guest on the show to perform. He attracted interviews from all over the region. Dewayne started performing in a local comedy club. It was here where he perfected the art of joking and story- telling while performing amazing magic tricks. In March of 2002, he entered the classroom as a teacher and Autistic Mentor. During this time he saw the troubles of bullying and started developing a new show for school systems called “Magic with a Message.” This show combined comedy, magic and audience interaction with a series of points illustrated about the dangers of bullying. Now Dewayne presents this pro-gram to thousands of students across the U.S. every year. Currently residing in Tampa, Dewayne recently visited Christ Our Savior School and presented his show incorpo-rating African American History facts and magic. His presentation kept the attention of all students ages 3 through 14…. his magic tricks even baffled the teachers.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU We would also like to thank those parishioners from the six founding parishes who save Campbell Soup/product labels and Box Tops for Education. We are able to purchase the “extras” that we need using these product incentives. Spe-cial thanks to St. Jude parishioners, John and Marilyn Krolo, who count our labels and box tops for us. We are grateful for your help.
