THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Today we hear how Abram encounters Melchizedek, “king of Salem . . . and a priest of God Most High” (Gen 14:18). Melchizedek appears nowhere else in scripture, but is nonetheless significant. Psalm 110 declares of the great King David, “You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek,” a description later given (in the letter to the Hebrews) to Christ as High Priest. Early Christians saw in Melchizedek’s bread and wine the bread and wine of the Eucharist; Paul’s account of the Last Supper (in today’s second reading) is the oldest one in scripture. In the Gospel, Luke describes Jesus providing bread for a crowd in words similar to Paul’s, words still used by the Church: Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it. Together, these three readings reveal how Christian priesthood, Christ’s Real Presence, and the call to serve those in need are all found in the gift of the Eucharist. CHURCH, EUCHARIST, AND THOSE IN NEED There is a saying: “The Church makes the Eucharist, and the Eucharist makes the Church.” In the Eucharistic celebration, we find Christ truly present in the consecrated bread and wine. We also find him in the assembly, the scriptures, and the preacher-presider—everything we do to “do this,” and in doing “this,” we become the Body of Christ. Our Eucharistic remembrance of Jesus is a living sacramen-tal memory that transforms us, too. We receive Communion to live in communion with Christ and one another, to become the “real presence” of Christ in the world. We do what the disciples did: we feed those in need with the love and compassion with which Christ feeds us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We owe today’s beautiful feast to a valiant woman who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She became convinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucharist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that “nobody wanted.” He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent. Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ’s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ’s Body and Blood in more frequent Communion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an “anchoress,” a woman living in seclusion in a room attached to a parish church. Imagine her delight at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ’s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ’s Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her struggle and sorrows with dignity and meaning.

HAGAN ESTO EN MEMORIA MÍA Estamos familiarizados con las indicaciones que Jesús dio a sus discípulos en la Última Cena. ¿Pero qué es exacta-mente aquello que tenemos que hacer en memoria de Jesús? Una respuesta se enfoca en la “narrativa institucional” que se encuentra en las Oraciones Eucarísticas: vamos a consagrar el pan y el vino, cambiándolos, por el poder del Espíritu Santo, en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Esto es verdad; pero pen-semos acerca de lo que se requiere en realidad hacerlo, como

la Iglesia lo ha hecho por casi dos mil años. •Debemos recordar a Jesús, recordar a Jesús, la Palabra de Dios

en forma humana. Para hacer esto, necesitamos esa otra palabra de Dios, dada en una forma diferente: las palabras en las Escrituras.

•Necesitamos reunirnos para hacer esto. La Última Cena es una comida comunitaria con Jesús. En su carta a los corintios, Pablo describe acciones hechas dentro de un grupo, acciones que empie-zan con esa comida comunitaria con Jesús. Nos reunimos como los discípulos de hoy y continua esa actividad de grupo en nuestras asambleas.

•Necesitamos encontrar una forma para reunirnos con algún grado de orden. Necesitamos ser líderes. Necesitamos predicadores para que proclamen la Palabra, necesitamos quien presida para repetir las acciones de Jesús, personas que estén “ordenadas”, hayan recibido el Sacramento del Orden, para que prediquen y consagren el pan y el vino. LA IGLESIA, LA EUCARISTÍA Y QUIENES TIENEN NECESIDAD Hay un dicho que dice: “La Iglesia hace la Eucaristía y la Euca-ristía hace la Iglesia”. En la celebración Eucarística, encontramos a Cristo verdaderamente presente en el pan y vino consagrados. También lo encontramos en la asamblea, las Escrituras y al que preside-predica, todo lo que hacemos para “hacer esto”, y al hacer “esto”, nos hacemos el Cuerpo de Cristo. Nuestra conmemoración Eucarística de Jesús es una memoria sacramental viva que también nos transforma. Recibimos la Comunión para vivir en comunión con Cristo y con los demás, para hacernos “la presencia real” de Cristo en el mundo. Hacemos lo que los discípulos hicieron, damos de comer a los más necesitados con el amor y la compasión con que Cristo nos alimenta. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Perú tiene más de 3000 fiestas cada año, normalmente en torno al santo patrón de algún pueblo. La celebración de Corpus Christi es celebrada en todo el país. Pero es más llamativa en Cusco. Durante el día se escucha el repique de María Angola, la campana más grande de todo Perú, que existe desde el siglo XVI. La celebración incluye una procesión con quince santos y vírgenes del siglo XVII, que vienen desde sus santuarios hasta la Catedral de Cusco para honrar el Cuerpo de Jesús. Estas imágenes son cargadas por la plaza de armas antes de llegar a la catedral donde se quedarán hasta el octavo día. Según los peruanos, los santos y vírgenes pasan las siete noches platicando con el Señor de los temblores, bromeando y planificando el año que viene para sus parroquias. El último día, los santos y vírgenes regresan a sus santuarios con otra procesión. Estas dos procesiones nos recuerdan que por mucho que los latinoamericanos amemos y veneremos a los santos y vírgenes, reconocemos que tanto ellos como nosotros estamos al servicio de Cristo Jesús.

Baptist Catholic Church in Dunnellon has invited our parishioners to join his parishioners in the 10th annual world-wide Global Rosary Relay for the Sanctification of Priests this Friday, June 28, at 7:00 p.m. On this date, Catholics at more than 170 participating locations in 68 countries will pray the Joyful Mysteries at an allocated half hour in thanksgiving to God for our priests and to implore the protection and loving care of Our Lady, Mother of all priests, for all her priestly sons. With the coming of midnight on June 28, the entire world will have been encircled in prayer for our priests. St. John is located at 7525 S. US Highway 41 in Dunnellon, FL.
