NEWS FROM FATHER DONNELLY

The end of an era.

Jim O’Brien, the Coordinating Principal of St Agnes’ Parish Schools, has announced that he will be retiring at the end of 2014. St Agnes’ Parish schools are indebted to Jim’s contribution as a teacher, a coordinator, an assistant principal, a principal, a leader and an educator over 40 years. Numerous students, parents and teachers have had the good fortune of being associated with Jim in his role as an educator, leader and friend. It is difficult to express in this short space what he has achieved and what he has done for so many people. As a leader, Jim went beyond the boundaries of teaching and learning and played a key role in establishing a culture of educational excellence based on building relationships, pastoral care and professional development.

I know between now and the end of the year many people will catch up with Jim personally but if you would like to be a part of his farewell and retirement dinner, please set aside Saturday, 20th December. There will be more details in the coming weeks.

A new Administrative Structure.

As a result of a comprehensive review in term one this year, a new administrative structure for St Paul’s and MacKillop will be implemented in 2015. Members of staff of St Paul’s and MacKillop have worked across both campuses for many years so it is timely that a new administrative structure can be implemented to support the Year 7-12 continuum. In the coming weeks there will be advertisements for a Principal and two Assistant Principals Years 7-12. There will be Assistant Principal Curriculum and Administration and Assistant Principal Pastoral and Staff Support. The overarching name will be MacKillop College and St Paul’s will be referred to as St Paul’s Campus. I would like to especially thank Tim McCosker and David Jenkins at MacKillop and Peter Murphy and Adam Kelly at St Paul’s for their outstanding contributions to their respective schools over many years. We have indeed been very fortunate to have had their dedication, enthusiasm and expertise, all of which has contributed to the many successes of two great schools.

One of the strengths of our Parish schools’ system is that all the schools work collaboratively to achieve common goals. To ensure the ongoing cooperation and coordination across primary and secondary, John McQueen will fulfil this role under the new title of Coordinating Executive Officer (Parish Schools).

COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

RAISING NICE KIDS

As parents and teachers we want our children to become caring, respectful and responsible adults. A study by Harvard psychologist, Richard Weissbourd who runs the ‘Make Caring Common’ project, has revealed that about 80% of youth said that their parents were more concerned with their achievements than whether they cared about others. As schools we also tend to focus more on achievements than anything else. Weissbourd argues that “children are not born simply good or bad… They need adults who will help them become caring, respectful and responsible for their communities at every stage of their childhood”.

There are five main strategies to raise moral, caring children according to ‘Make Caring Common’:

1. Make caring for others a priority. Children need to learn to balance their needs with the needs of others, whether it is passing the ball to a teammate or deciding to stand up for a friend who is being bullied.

Page 3: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter T3, Wk2 25th July 2014

2. Provide opportunities for children to practice caring and gratitude. Studies show that people who are in the habit of expressing gratitude are more likely to be helpful, compassionate and forgiving. They are also more likely to be happy and healthy.

3. Expand your child’s circle of concern. Almost all children care about a small circle of family and friends. The challenge is to learn to also care about others – someone who doesn’t speak their language, a new student to the school, their bus driver, and children in other places.

4. Be a strong moral role model and mentor. Children learn ethical values by watching the actions of adults they respect. As role models we need to practice honesty, fairness and caring ourselves.

5. Guide children in managing destructive feelings. Often our ability to care for others is overwhelmed by anger, shame, envy or other negative feelings. We need to teach children that all feelings are okay, but some ways of dealing with them are not helpful. Children need our help in learning to cope with these feelings in a productive way. Simple strategies such as stopping, taking a deep breath and counting to five before acting can help a child manage their destructive feelings.

We know that children do not become good people on their own. They need the support and guidance of others, especially their parents and teachers. The best results are achieved when the values and attitudes taught at home are reinforced by teachers who share the same commitment, care and respect for others.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Year 11 (2015)

As many Year 10 families are aware, it is decision making time for our Year 10 students as to whether they will remain at St Joseph’s Regional College or transition to Newman Senior Technical College for their Higher School Certificate journey. Last week students attended information evenings to help guide them in their decision.

I would like to thank Mr Jim O’Brien, Mrs Cath Eichmann and Mr Ian Lutton for their exceptional work in presenting on the evening. Thank you also Leaders of Learning, House and Year Coordinators, and our Careers team for attending on the evening. I would particularly like to pay a special tribute to our Captain, Lisa Fraser, who addressed students and families. Lisa did a fantastic job; so much so that her speech is published in this week’s newsletter:

Lisa Fraser’s speech: When I was in your position this time 2 years ago, I was not looking forward to Year 11 and 12. I knew I was staying at Regional but I was worried about whether I would be able to cope with the infamous amount and difficulty of work. I used to walk around asking past and current senior students 'Is year 11 and 12 hard?', hoping that they would all say no. None of them did. If you asked me the same question now, I'm afraid that I would say that the HSC is probably the easiest thing I've ever done. Just kidding.

Year 11 is definitely a step up from year 10 but not just academically. Socially, you become a lot closer with your friends. When you're feeling swamped by a seemingly never-ending list of homework, just remember that the kid sitting next to you is in the exact same boat. Friends are great for empathy, especially when you're all going through a similar experience. However, crying with your friends is not going to get you good marks. Well, it hasn't worked for me yet. What you really need is someone who has done this all before; some post-preliminary beings. Don’t be afraid to talk to older students, even if it is just to complain with someone new. Ask them about which subjects they enjoyed, which ones they didn't, their study habits - if you're lucky they might even have some past essays or study notes to lend you.

Page 4: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter T3, Wk2 25th July 2014

It makes sense for you to talk to someone who's done Year 11 once already but what about someone who's done it 1077.3 times and counting? Teachers! Guys, your teachers will become your friends. Seriously. I don't think any of my other friends would mark 8 1000 word English essays for me over the holidays, let alone do the same for everyone else in the class. While at the moment you may be thinking 'No way, teachers hate kids. They're so out of touch and they just don’t understand us' you'll quickly learn that teachers are your best resource. Them and Google.

If you don’t have one already, you're probably going to have to make yourself some sort of study plan for year 11 with set time slots for working on each subject. Mrs Tinsey in the study centre and any of your other teachers-soon-to-be-friends will be happy to help you make and stick to a schedule that works best for you. Personally, I prioritise my homework each night by doing the most important work first. That could be whatever is due first, stuff that I need for an assessment or even based on which teacher will be the least angry if I don’t get their work done.

I hope I haven't fooled you into thinking that Year 11 is just study, study, toilet break, study. Somewhere in the fine print it does actually say that you are allowed to have a life. Please don't ever think that just because you've decided to do the H-Stress-C that you have to give up everything else. The key thing to aim for is balance. Don’t abandon your hobbies, you'll need them as a chance for escape later on. My task has been to balance school work with my sporting commitments. But even with this I've had to make sacrifices. I've had to stop playing volleyball this semester because I've got HSC exams or something like that but I am still playing and reffing soccer on weekends. Obviously, we can't all be pro soccer players like me, so you've got to find your own method of staying sane, whether that be music, art, horse riding, sport, partying, reading, Xbox or whatever you kids are into these days. So yes, year 11 is a big step up from year 10 but it’s a worthwhile one. We get to choose our own subjects, we can wear jewellery, we get study periods, we have our own canteen with not one but two fridges and so many other unspoken privileges that I probably shouldn't mention in front of parents and teachers…

I hope that all of you decide to come to Regional next year but if not, please don’t blame it on my speech. Good luck to everyone and remember that its two years of hard work to make the rest of your life a lot easier. Cheers :)

Year 12 HSC Trials

We wish our Year 12 students all the very best as they commence their Trial HSC examinations next week. I ask the College community to keep Year 12 in their prayers; this is their last term of formal lessons. They return in term 4 but only to sit their HSC examinations.

Vinnies Winter Appeal

Last term St Joseph’s Regional College participated as a school community in the 2014 St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. Each PC was given the challenge to bring in the most items of clothing, blankets and other similar items to donate. This was an initiative suggested by a few of our senior students and our Vinnies Student Representatives who saw the potential for our school to make a considerable difference.

On the last day of collection of items, Friday 20thJune, the school held an out of uniform day in which students brought a gold coin donation to give to the Winter Appeal. In combination with the gold coin, students were encouraged to wear extra layers of clothing which they would donate to increase their PC’s tally. It was a huge success with over 3000 items donated in total and we thank all those families who helped by getting involved and finding clothes to send in. These items were picked up by the Vinnies van the

following Monday, and due to the generosity of the student’s and their families, the van was required to make two trips to successfully transport all the items.

On Wednesday of this week at our college assembly, our local area’s St Vincent De Paul Representative, Sarah Mason, collected a cheque for $1000 on behalf of the St Vincent De Paul Society, to go towards the Winter Appeal. At this assembly she addressed how impressed she was by the continual effort and enthusiasm shown by St Joseph’s Regional College towards this community service project.

St Joseph’s Regional College Youth and Family Mass A date for your diaries; Sunday 10th August (end of week 4) will be the next opportunity for us to host parts of the weekly Youth and Family Mass at 5.00 pm at St Agnes Church. A number of our students will be involved in the mass and you are most welcome to join us for this celebration.

WALKATHON – 8TH AUGUST 2014

This year’s Walkathon will be held on Friday, 8th August 2014 and is a major fundraising event for the College, giving students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and next week will be given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Mrs Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Mr Chris Kalchbauer at the College.

Thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to seek sponsorship, in addition to completing the healthy 10km walk, as it provides opportunity to purchase items which could not otherwise be purchased for students.

YR 8 MATHS STUDENTS ARE “SMARTIE’S” Many parents may remember visiting the school car park or a nearby street to count cars as an “innovative” way to study statistics. I am not sure how much was learnt but it was a good excuse to leave the classroom.

Our recent unit of study in Year 8, Analysing Data, is an illustration of the role technology can play in the mathematics classroom.

Students were treated to a far more “tasteful” way of applying their learning. The lesson involved analysing the various data collected from smartie packets.

This engaging resource was located on the internet. It was a great way to capture student interest and practically apply the many skills learnt in previous lessons. Students also created various types of “smartie” graphs and recorded these visual displays on their iPads.

Students have the electronic version of their Mathematics textbook on their iPad. This saves space and weight in their school bag and also provides access many supplementary activities. Mathematics Challenge The various talents of students at St Joseph’s Regional College are remarkable. Our newsletters affirm achievements in Sport, Creative and Performing Arts and numerous others areas. We would like to take this opportunity to recognise and affirm talent in another area. Namely some of our very capable mathematicians.

At the end of Term 2, Year 8 Mathematics students: Hannah Garvan, Alisha Newbound, Michelle Shoobert, Jesse Morgan, Dylan Mason, Dominic Byrne, Matthew Hughes and Rueben Gammon participated in an enrichment opportunity provided by the Australian Mathematics Trust. Over a 3 week period these students applied their knowledge and skills to solve six different challenging problems by “working mathematically”. This encompasses communicating, problem solving, reasoning, understanding and fluency.

All participants are commended on their sustained effort and their ability to meet the set deadlines. Congratulations to Rueben Gammon, Alisha Newbound and Jesse Morgan who were awarded a Credit for the quality of their responses.

Thank you to Mrs Handley and Mr Eamonn Shannon for their support and mentoring throughout this activity. We hope it will blossom into an annual event. Date for the Diary

Many of our clever mathematics students have entered The Australian Mathematics competition on Thursday, 7th August. We wish them all the best and hope they use this opportunity to display their amazing talent. The Mathematics Department

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to my trip to Papua New Guinea. I received many generous donations of stationery, money, toys, clothes and books. I packed as much as I could and the other youth ministry officers will take the remainder of donations on future missions trips.

Firstly, I stayed in Port Moresby, where we ran an equipping school for local church and youth leaders, so they are able to grow closer to God and better serve their communities. I gave some stationery to the children I met during this training. I can't describe the joy on their faces; they immediately started drawing and one of my team members reported that the children in her host family slept with the pens and books that night. Something that we would take for granted they appreciated SO much. And then we went to Mt Hagen, where a nun, Sr Davida, looks after the local orphans. With her, my team and I visited some remote places and families, and also gave out some of these toys, clothes and stationery. It was such a joy to see how much these children appreciated their gifts. I wish you all could have seen the smiles on their faces. So a HUGE thank you, your generosity is much appreciated and the Papua New Guineans loved that their Australian brothers and sisters were thinking of them enough to contribute.

The Cochrane Cup The Cochrane Cup is a prestigious competition for U14 Catholic Rugby League teams. The Regional College team added to their outstanding achievements from last year by winning through to the final 16 teams in the State. The Regional College hosted St Paul’s Kempsey and St Paul’s Port Macquarie to decide the district winner. Despite being down 8-6 at half time, the Regional team rallied to defeat St Paul’s Port Macquarie 22-12 in a very competitive game. The next game against Kempsey was arguably our best of the competition. St Paul’s Kempsey were a big, physical team and whoever won the game would progress to the next round. With determination and great support from the Year 8 sport classes our boys were able to shut out the Kempsey team and won 36– 6. In the final against John Paul College, Coffs Harbour our U14 clicked once again and played an excellent team game to dominate on the field and on the score board. The final 16 round was against St Joseph’s, Banora Point. The Regional team trained and prepared enthusiastically and played well on the day but couldn’t match the talent they had out wide and their well drilled structure. It was a great experience to play at the higher levels and be involved with such a good group of boys. Next week we come together to play the local schools in the annual Harry Wells gala day and we wish the boys all the best in their games. Gerard Toohey and John Sprague
