Dear Parents and Caregivers, Since our last newsletter at the end of Term 1 there is much news to share with you. Please have a read of the key news items below: Three Ways Interviews Thanks to all who attended these 2 valuable evenings in late Term 1. Please ensure that if you were not able to attend you catch up with your Class/Homeroom teacher in the next week. Camps Program 2017 We commenced our 2017 camp program with the Year 5s and afterwards we received this very affirming email from Marty Buchanan, Teacher/Instructor at the Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre. Hi Denis, I just want to convey to you and your staff, what a wonderful week we have had with your school here at BOEC. Students were engaging, resilient, polite and tried their very best at all of the activities offered during the week. So, well done to the St Joeys students. But the biggest thankyou and ‘pat on the back’ must go to both Hanna (Kenna) and Sunniva (Antonucci) for giving up their time for a whole week and ensuring the students were given this opportunity with us here in Batchelor. Both have a great relationship with students and have a lovely calm and reassuring nature which definitely rubs off on those around them. They are certainly a big asset to your school Denis. Congratulations to our Year 12 class on the way they participated in the Mary River Retreat. Thanks to Mark Pickham for the planning the event and for Anne Kunnicki’s valuable input. It was special experience for the Year 12s to spend time with the NET Team and reflect on their final year at school and life beyond. End of Term 1 We finished Term 1 with a real mixture of emotions: the excitement of holidays, Easter and the sudden departure of our parish priest. The term ended with our College community participating in a very creative liturgy as we reflected on the real purpose of Easter – the death and resurrection of Jesus. Its importance is often lost in the commercial push for chocolate and buns. Meanwhile Father Mark sent a message to our community on April 4 to say he was now in Sydney and had begun catching up with doctors and specialists: “I am being cared for very well. Take care and God bless. I have had lots of visitors and support from the communities around Sydney which was one of the reasons to come south. Nothing much else to say at this time except that I hope you all had a happy and joy filled Easter and let us keep praying for each other. He is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!”

New Priest Father Jim Knight has been appointed as our short term new parish priest as we wait for a permanent long term appointment. Latest News on Father Mark from his Provincial Leader ‘Father Mark McGuiness is now in a hospice at Darlinghurst…Mark really appreciates your prayers and concerns. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers at this time.’

College Facility Upgrades We acknowledge both current and past Parents and Friends groups along with the NT Government for their support in providing important upgrades and improvements to our College facilities. The College is making some very positive advances with these re-furbishments. These upgrades include: a very stylish facelift to our parent meet-ing room, rollout of the colourful and very popular primary seating, plans for revamped primary garden beds to house the new seats, steps to the College entrance painted by Mark Derken leading up to Anzac Day along with line painting of the games area in secondary. The secondary upgrade is nearing completion with concreting and new seating to follow on from the installation of shade sails . Approval and quotes for new signage to the front of the College will be enhancing our Catholic Identity. And finally our own Bore Water St Josephs Catholic College is thrilled to have the final stage of our sprinkler system installed over the Easter break as a result of a grant from Father Mark’s order, The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. To celebrate the instal-lation of our final sprinkler we sent some of our Year 5/6 students out of class for a celebratory leap! This has been a long-time dream which is now fulfilled. Our students have lush green lawns and gardens sourced from our very own bore supply and marks the end of our very expensive reliance on an external water supplier. This project could not have occurred without the wonder-ful and very generous support of the MSCs. Thanks also to locals Bob Cavanagh and Johnny Duggan who under-took the installation. ANZAC Ceremony Thanks to Jade Derksen our DSTA for organising our involvement in the wonderful series of Anzac Day events, especially our own ceremony. Thanks to all students and staff who participated in such large numbers again this year. The Melbourne Experience This week we welcome home our senior students from their hectic Melbourne schedule of university/TAFE visits, the careers expo at Caulfield Racecourse and the oppor-tunity to experience the cultural delights of Melbourne.

Students had a wonderful time and gain significantly from this experi-ence. A big thank you to Tracy Lefevre for her organisation and leader-ship of the program. Sarah Assmus Congratulations to the Sarah Assmus in Year 9 on being selected in the Under 15 Australian Football squad to compete at the National Champi-onships in Perth during July. Enjoy reading our first edition for Term 2.

P&F Fundraiser Our Parent and Friends Committee have organised the first fundraiser for this year. Primary students have the opportunity to decorate a mug for their Mum/Grandmother for Mother’s Day. This has been a well-supported venture. If you would like to purchase a mug, please contact the office.

St Joseph’s Feast Day Mass

On Tuesday of this week the College celebrated the Feast of

St Joseph, the Worker.

St Joseph is the patron of workers, the unemployed and un-

deremployed. The feast reminds us that Joseph was a loving

father, husband and a tradesman who toiled hard to keep his

family out of poverty and harm.

As we approach Mothers Day it’s a timely reminder of the im-

portance of family in the lives of young people. The Gospel

from the mass was one that highlights the role of parents in

looking out for their children.

Joseph and Mary travelled to Jerusalem for Passover and

when they returned home they lost contact with Jesus and had

to return to Jerusalem to find him. I think this story shows Je-

sus parents giving him the space to make his way in the world

without hovering over him all the time.

Parenting is a challenging occupation because there is no

‘blue print’ that outlines how we should parent. It’s a fine bal-

ance between giving them space to make decisions and mak-

ing mistakes and being helicopter parents.

They need to develop decision making skills and resilience

and that’s the grey area for parents. How much rope do you

give your kids? That’s the million dollar question. If we hover

over them all the time they will never develop these skills.

Part 2: ‘f I had a Parenting Do Over’

In the last edition of the newsletter I outlined a few ideas from Jonathon’s

Book. I would like to share a few more and encourage you to purchase

the book – you will not regret it.

“When my kids were in middle school, I heard something repeatedly from

my kids,

“Dad, none of my friends’ parents are this strict.”

Name the topic:

Their phones: I had more rules.

Their music: I was more involved in what they listened to.

Their screen time: We monitored it much more than most of their friends’

parents.

And I don’t regret any of it.

Yes, I realise this book is about parenting practices I would do differently if I had a do-over. And truly, I

would not change the guardrails I placed for my kids in middle school. I think rules were on par.

The Good News

The part I’d change is the segue.

No, I’m not talking about one of those cool little two-wheeled motor carts that mall cops ride. I’m talking

about an actual segue – decreasing one thing while increasing another.

Remember … DJ’s are the masters of the segue, a good DJ knows how to segue from one song to an-

other seamlessly. Parents need to learn the same skill – gradually increasing the boundaries they set

for their kids while gradually increasing their freedom to make decisions.

I wish I would have implemented this strategy form the beginning.

Here’s what I mean.

When I first had kids, I didn’t really have a game plan. The ball was hiked and we just began running. I

hadn’t thought through the amount of guidance my kids would need at different ages, and I never really

thought through the need for different degrees of help from Dad and Mum. I was just strict because I

thought that would help my kids learn the difference between right and wrong. But soon they grew to

the age where they needed to learn how to make moral decisions when Mum and Dad weren’t there.

How can kids learn to make these decisions if Mum and Dad keep making decisions for them?

Or let me ask another question: When is the magic age?

We’ve all wondered how long to keep on the training wheels. When can my daughter spend the night

at her friend’s house? When should I let my son have his first phone?

First consider the big picture. No one would argue with the fact that toddlers need a lot of guidance. If

you take your kids camping and your two year old starts running toward the campfire, I don’t know

many parents who would just sit there and say, “Let him learn a lesson the hard way!” Parents recog-

nise toddlers require plenty of guidance!

On the opposite extreme, when our kids get to age 18, they can pack their bags, move out, and join the

Army. We don’t set their bedtime anymore. We don’t have control over what apps they download…

The debate is always the time in between the ages of two and eighteen…”

Merit Awards System

Students receive merit awards from their classroom or specialist teachers. Students need to keep these merit

awards safe as students who have received three merit awards in a 12 month period receive a Principal award.

If students receive 9 merit awards and have collected their three Principal awards, they will receive a $5 voucher

for the school canteen.

In Week Two, students in Year 5/6 were read the book ‘The Best Part of Me’. Students then wrote a reflection on the body part they believed was the best part of themselves. Some students wrote about their legs or their hands being the best part of themselves as they allowed them to bake, create craft, catch a footy, swim, change gears on a motorbike and peddle a bike.

Friendly Faces in our Community visits the Transition Class

Transition were lucky enough to have a visit from the Katherine Police last Friday. They were visited by Constable Trent Dole, Senior Constable Matt Ridolfi and Constable Barb Ramlah. The Transition’s learnt about how the Police are always here to help us if we ever get in to trouble and how we should definitely not be afraid to say hello to police when we see them around town.

Families

St Joseph’s Catholic College would like to participate in the National Read More in May scheme. With the

College’s focus on Literacy and Numeracy we would like to encourage our students to spend more time with a

book. Students can collect a calendar from the library to fill out as they complete at least 10 minutes of read-

ing a day with a family member, Parent signature is required as proof of reading.

Students can come and see Miss Colleen in the library to be registered online to go in the draw to win

vouchers to spend on books from Scholastic.

At the end of May the SJCC library will be hosting a

Read with your Family evening.

Parents and siblings will be encouraged to come to the library to spend time reading together and borrowing.

This is a great opportunity for families to connect with their children through books. More information will be

sent home closer to the date.

Volunteering at St. Joseph’s Canteen

Year 11 student, Kahl Buckley recently commenced volunteer

work in the College canteen. Kahl’s goal is to gain more

employability skills through voluntary work in the canteen. He

has been enjoying making pizzas and biscuits and assisting

with food preparation. Kahl is passionate about cooking and

baking and wants to eventually find a traineeship as a Baker.

Kahl will commence a VET Bakery course in Term 2 to gain

more skills. I would like to thank Lyn Davey, Canteen Manager,

and the Inclusion Support Team whose dedication and support

are helping Kahl to achieve his dream.

On Monday April 24th our College remembered our fallen Anzacs by hosting

our St Joseph’s Catholic College ANZAC Service.

Our guests were Corporal Tan from 17 Squadron and Father Knight from St

Joseph’s Church in Katherine. It was a pleasure to see parents attending the

ceremony along with Little Joey’s.

For the first time the service had Mr Welsford playing the bagpipes. This was

very moving as he played Amazing Grace and Coming Home. The Air Force

cadets from 803 Squadron were in attendance to assist with the flag party.

These students also attend St Joseph’s Catholic College.

In honour of the 41 Australian Soldiers fallen in combat since the Vietnam War, all casualties in Afghanistan, students laid rosemary and lit a candle for

each soldier fallen. Guests and parents gathered after the ceremony for light refreshments catered for by our wonderful staff in our canteen.

Mrs Derksen visited classrooms, dropped off ANZAC Day biscuits cooked by Mr Pett’s home economics class and read a story called ‘Anzac Biscuits’.
