St. Joseph Parish The Vigil June 2nd, 2019

ROONEY TUNES MEDICAL MISSIONARIES OF MARY: This weekend we have the joy of welcoming a missionary sister to talk to us about the work of her religious community. Sister Kathie is here as part of our participation in the Church’s missionary co-operative. Once a year, we welcome a missionary to the parish to remind us of our own call to be part of the missionary work of the Church. On the day of Our Lord’s Ascension He gave His disciples a mandate to preach the gospel to all the na-tions. Needless to say, most of us will never be able to fulfill that command. However, most of us are able to assist those who leave family and home to go to distant places. I would ask you to please let Sr. Kathie know that she is welcomed! Did anyone happen to Google Matt Talbot and his association with Mother Mary Martin founder of the Medical Missionaries of Mary? Matt is patron of those struggling with alcoholism and drug addic-tion. His is an incredible story of faith and recovery. NEWMAN CONNECTION: Is a High School Outreach program that acts as a bridge be-tween graduating high school students and campus ministry. For many students college can be both a daunting and exciting time. Catholic campus ministry wants to be there for you! The aim of the Newman centers is to keep students connected to the Catholic Church, or to re-connect them. If you have any questions about the campus ministry at the college you will be attending, please call Cassie Campton at 866.815.2034 or [email protected] The feast of Pentecost, Sunday 9th June, the par-ish will celebrate 10:00 Mass for all recent

graduates. Have your graduate join us in their cap and gown.

SERVICE OF ANOINTING: Next Saturday, 8th June at 11:00 am the parish will celebrate a service of anoint of the sick. Immediately after the service lunch will be served in the dining room. If you plan to attend, please RSVP at the parish office, so we won’t have to water down the soup! 734.676.9082. Maybe you have a relative or neighbour would ap-preciate a ride to the service.

“I declared my ways, and you answered me, teach me your statutes. The St Joseph St Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) thanks you so much for your ongoing support. Our St Joes SVdP confer-ence is a life line for Trenton neighbors that have nowhere else to turn. We are truly blessed and humbled by the confi-dence you have in us to be the stewards of your generosity. All of your monetary donations are used to make rent and utility payments, purchase food and purchase gas cards for our Trenton Neighbors in Need. Your furniture donations and the 120 Thanksgiving Outreach baskets received last November have made a difference in the life of every neigh-bor who received these gifts from you. God has truly blessed our parish!

Since the IRS is requiring that SVdP donations be processed separately from the church bank account you may no long-er use Faith Direct to contribute on line. Therefore, if you would like to contribute to SVdP we kindly ask that you make your donation check out to SVdP-St Joseph, put the check in an envelope marked SVdP and place the donation either in the collection basket during mass, or, in one of the two wooden St. Vincent de Paul boxes found mounted on the wall in the church near either the front door or the side door off of Elm St. Cash donations are also accepted and may be placed in the wooden box or in an envelope marked SVdP in the collection basket.

We hope that this change will not impact your ability to help us. Thank you again for giving us the ability to serve as the hands and voice of Jesus to our Neighbors in Need. Barbara Radecki-Kelley, President St Joseph SVdP

St Joseph School

It is hard to believe that my Three Year Old Preschool students have finished their first year as St. Joseph School Cardinals! What an amazing year it has been, filled with social, emotional, academic and spiritual growth. I’m so proud of them! I wanted to share with all of you my favorite memory from the year. It was when my students came back from Easter Break and celebrated THE GOOD NEWS of our RISEN LORD with a Resurrection Party in our classroom! The day began with The Easter Story on our felt board. The children listened as I placed each picture in its place beginning with the angry soldiers and the crown of thorns that would be placed on the head of Jesus. One child said, “The crown looks very pokey!” The children were emotional as they heard that Jesus was forced to carry his own cross up the mountain. Another child came forward and asked, “Why are the sol-diers being so mean to Jesus?” The room was silent as I explained that Jesus was placed on the cross with the other criminals. Children began getting up from their spots on the carpet as if they needed to be closer to the pictures. One student put her hand on the picture of Jesus on the cross. Next, I explained that our Lord was in the tomb for three days and during this time, Joseph prayed with Mary. The children remem-bered that Mary and Joseph are the parents of Jesus. The next picture was of the stone moved from the en-trance of the tomb and the children began looking around at one another. Finally, the last picture showed Jesus in a fresh white robe outside of the tomb with Mary nearby. The children were excited when I said, Alleluia, our Lord is risen, this is the Good News! Next, the children participated in an egg hunt, had a relay race with paper carrots, and made a sticker page showing the events of Easter morning. Finally, everyone enjoyed a lovely snack of cheese and crackers, Rice Krispies Treats and juice! What fun! What an emotional experience it was for me to share the events of Holy Week and the Good News of the Easter Story with my students! I was amazed to see their level of understanding and comprehension of what our Lord endured for us and how emotional they were to celebrate His Resurrection! Once again, my won-derful students helped me deepen “my” faith by experiencing ‘their” faith! God’s blessings, Joell Vassar, Preschool Teacher

June 2nd SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Narratives of unity We tell stories that unite us—and oth-ers that divide us. Around the table of

our Eucharist, we share a story that once brought Jews and Greeks, men and women, slaves and free people

together in a common hope. Our mod-ern media climate often obscures truth

and polarizes society. On this World Communication Day, we pray for guid-ance for those who tell the story of our

times through words and images, whether in news stations or in Holly-

wood, on social media, in politics, and in preaching. We all share the respon-

sibility to affirm the narrative that makes us one in dignity.

Today's readings: Acts 7:55-60; Revelation 22:12-14, 16-

17, 20; John 17:20-26 (61). “So that they may all be one, as you,

Father, are in me and I in you.” June 3rd

MEMORIAL OF CHARLES LWANGA AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS

Embolden the young and the restless Young people often get a bad rap.

They’re apathetic, entitled, superficial, and underachieving, older folks some-times say. But cut them some slack—it isn’t easy being young, and each new generation faces challenges and pres-

sures the previous ones didn’t. And the young, by virtue of their youth, have

admirable qualities—idealism, energy, and fearlessness, to name a few—that everyone could emulate. Saint Charles Lwanga, martyred in Uganda in 1886,

is a patron of youth because he helped them resist an abusive ruler. Embolden the young to do the right thing by en-

couraging the strengths that come with their age.

Today's readings: Acts 19:1-8; John 16:29-33 (297).

“In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered

the world.” June 4th

EASTER WEEKDAY All together now

With Pentecost drawing near, the dis-ciples of Jesus went to a room to pray and wait for the coming of the Spirit that Christ had promised before he

ascended to the right hand of God. In one sense they were hiding in fear, but

in another the small community was gathering the energy that would burst

forth in tongues of fire and the tongues of all nations to fill the world with the gospel of Jesus. Gathered to-gether, they were beginning to under-

stand what it would mean to follow one who would now be present to

them in a different way than they had known, and to learn how to be at one with Christ and one another—a call to

communion and action we still hear today.

Today's readings: Acts 20:17-27; John 17:1-11a (298).

“I pray for . . . the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and eve-

rything of mine is yours.” June 5th

MEMORIAL OF BONIFACE, BISHOP, MARTYR

Meet hostility with kindness Boniface (675-754) was an English

monk who spent most of his life as a missionary in present-day Germany. Although nominally Christian, many

Germanic people had returned to pre-Christian beliefs and practices. Com-

missioned as a bishop by Pope Gregory II, Boniface was sent to counter the work of lax missionaries who had

offered poor instruction. Boniface’s missionary success inspired many oth-ers to join him as he opened monas-teries throughout the country. Facing

resistance later in life, he was mar-tyred in 754. Boniface’s correspond-ence gives testament to a loving man

devoted to the gospel. Inspired by Boniface’s kindness and work to

change people’s hearts, listen thoughtfully today to someone who

thinks differently than you do. Today's readings:

Acts 20:28-28; John 17:11b-19 (299). ”I know that after my departure sav-age wolves will come among you.”

June 6th MEMORIAL OF NORBERT, BISHOP

Encounters of the third kind Did you know there are members of Catholic religious orders who are lay-

people? Some of them belong to what are called third, or tertiary, orders, and

most major religious orders include them. Members are men and women who do not necessarily live in commu-nity (though some do) but nonetheless

participate in the good works of the larger order to which they belong. Saint Norbert was one of the first

church figures to initiate a third order. He prepared a set of religious practices

that those in secular life could follow. If you feel yourself drawn to a religious lifestyle despite being firmly anchored in a secular life, explore the possibili-

ties third orders offer. Today's readings:

Acts 22:30; 23:6-11; John 17:20-26 (300).

"I wish that where I am they also may be with me."

June 7th EASTER WEEKDAY Breakfast is served

The gospel contains a lovely story we can take with us from this Easter sea-son, which ends this Sunday with the celebration of Pentecost. Peter and

the other disciples were at a loss as to what to do with themselves after Je-sus’ death, so they did the only thing they knew how to do: They went fish-ing. After a fruitless night on the sea,

they returned to shore to find the risen Christ cooking breakfast for them over a charcoal fire. Jesus serves the hungry

fishermen and they share a meal. Wouldn’t you love to have been there? The fact is, we have a standing invita-tion. The kitchen is open, the cook is available. Have a seat at the table.

Today's readings: Acts 25:13b-21; John 21:15-19 (301). “Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’ ”

June 8th EASTER WEEKDAY

The beloved is . . . you! The identity of the anonymous

“Beloved Disciple” is one of the great mysteries of the New Testament. He is mentioned only in the Gospel of John, which states this disciple is also its au-thor, leading many to assume the au-thor was John the Apostle. Scholars have debated who else it might be:

Lazarus, Mary Magdalene, Jesus’ brother James, among others. But pon-

der this: Maybe it’s you. Anglican au-thor Martin L. Smith suggests,

“Perhaps the disciple is never named . . . so that we can more easily accept that he bears witness to an intimacy

that is meant for each one of us.” Today's readings:

Acts 28:16-20, 30-31; John 21:20-25 (302).

“What concern is it of yours? You fol-low me.”
