Employment training workshops are offered at the Michigan Works! Service Center. Workshops are open to the public at no charge and focus on skills related to obtaining employment. Questions or reservations, call or email us @ CareerServices@michiganworks14.org

Computer Basics To better meet the needs of our customers, staff will be available by appointment to provide one-on-one basic computer train-ing, including: keyboarding, file and folder creation, internet basics, creat-ing email accounts, attaching files and more. At registration you will choose what you want to learn during your one hour appointment. Interviewing Tips Learn how to interview and have the confidence to talk positively about yourself and your skills, including some do’s and don'ts before, during, and after the interview. Michigan Works Orientation This overview of Michigan Works! pro-grams will allow users to identify what they need for their individual cir-cumstances; such as internet services, MiTalent usage, and job search. All are welcome although this is mandatory for some per the Unemploy-ment Insurance Agency (UIA). Effective Resumes This workshop will provide the early stages of a resume and cover the major points. If you want to understand the im-portance of having a “perfect” resume, this workshop is for you! Job Corps This pre-CPP workshop provides information and application to Job Corps training program opportunities, available to low-income indi-viduals between the ages of 16-24. The Mature Job Seeker Age discrimination is a convenient excuse when mature job seekers can’t find work. While not denying that it doesn’t happen, this workshop will discuss methods of minimizing the emphasis on age in the job search. Topics will include evaluating your options, resume writing and more. Cover & Follow-Up Letters Understanding and preparing effective letters that can be helpful when applying for a job or following up after an interview. GOCC Job Fair On Thursday April 21st, Glen Oaks Community College will host the annual 2016 Job Fair in conjunction with Michigan Works! Southwest and the St. Joseph County Department of Human Services. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the Glen Oaks Gymnasium, and will feature employers hiring for open positions. For a list of participating employers go to the GOCC website or stop in our office.

WorkKeys Writing Test Fee based (cost $13.25, money-order only) . The Writing Test is a paper test available to everyone, but is required by some school districts. WorkKeys Assessments/National Career Readiness Certification (NCRC) Fee based (cost $28.75 money-order only) testing offered twice per month. The NCRC demonstrates to employers that you have core workplace skills in Reading, Math and Locating Information. Earn your Michigan National Career Readiness Certificate by successfully completing all three WorkKeys tests. Prepare for WorkKeys with KeyTrain, a free self-directed, online training system. KeyTrain This is a comprehensive, yet easy to use system for improving and practic-ing the basic skills measured by the National Career Readiness Certification. Using KeyTrain, you can assess your potential WorkKeys score, review topics in each Work-Keys skill area, and practice problems similar to those on an actual WorkKeys assess-ment. The KeyTrain system includes targeted, self-paced instructions, pre and post assessments, a complete learning management system and an occupational job pro-files database.
