St. John’s Messenger Volume 95, Issue 3 March 18, 2015 Dear Beloved in the Lord, Grace and Peace to you in the Name of the One who brings joy through the death of death itself! What is joy, and specifically Easter joy? You might hear those words in the days ahead, and I pray that you don’t hear them like a stranger or a distant member of the family that rarely visits. Distant or close, I pray that you would truly get to know joy and understand more deeply how the Resurrection of Our Lord brings “her” to town. While you can know Easter with or without proper spring weather, you cannot truly know Easter without joy. It is right to begin by thinking about joy almost like a person, because relationships are a critical to experiencing and understanding the rich and full joy of the Resurrection. The joy of God is being in a full and deep relationship with God. In all of the Easter stories in all four Gospels, the Resurrection means restoring of joy by restoring of relationships. The deepest, truest and most lasting joy in the world is knowing and feeling the breadth of brokenness and suffering of Jesus’ Passion lifted up on the cross. There the Tree of Life was momentarily overtaken to become the tree of death. There God participates in God’s own rules of life and death. The Father Creator steps into the child’s game, playing along and participating fully in the score and the tally of points. God does not participate, however, for the points or the win. In fact, God loses. Not like a typical father, faking several moves or rolls to ensure the build-up of the child. No God uses his star lead striker, center forward in the pocket. The demons know who he is. The universe is award of his reputation and potential. Yet, God is not playing to impress. Not even the child is fully enamored with the skill or presence exhibited on the field. God was expected to be there to spend quality time with the child and to fend off the bullies.

St. John’s Messenger

Volume 95, Issue 3 March 18, 2015

Dear Beloved in the Lord,

Grace and Peace to you in the Name of the One who brings joy through the death of death itself!

We know both sides of this metaphor. Parents aren’t always what we expect. Yet, somehow and often late in time they do prove their love for us. When relationships fail it is most often a matter of expectations or trust. Communication either helps or hinders these currencies of building intimacy. When one or both are amiss, and communication isn’t clarifying the disparity—bitterness, frustration, anger, and even hatred are provoked. All of these emotions surround the Passion and cross.

After the tomb was found to be empty, all of the disciples began to understand what it means to know, see, trust and share in the reality that death was swallowed up by a love stronger than death. Jesus would appear to the disciples, not just for the purpose of showing scars and healed wounds, but for the purpose of healing relationships, binding up hope, and reconnecting shattered dreams. Jesus extended forgiveness so that the relationships could not move on far beyond where they were to a new path and road leading to the life God intends for us. On this new path and road, even while Jesus may not visible, Joy is evidently walking beside us. Life in the Spirit of the Resurrection is a life full of Joy. Beyond happiness which is temporary, joy becomes a faithful spiritual companion.

Yes, this spiritual emotion of joy is also a great witness and sign for others that we know the truth. It is a way that others can know and experience the truth that Jesus was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father so that we too might live in newness of life!

Have a joyful and joyous Easter!

Yours in the Love and Joy of Christ Jesus,Pastor Andrew Fitch

NEWS FROM THE PEWS

Recently our sanctuary received a “facelift” made possible by a bequest from Bud Diehl. With Council’s approval, June Diehl oversaw the Painting Committee, who secured bids, made the recommendation for Orvis Long to do the work, and chose the colors.

We thank June for her commitment to St. John’s and helping to make Bud’s wishes possible.

The work has been completed and on Sunday, March 22, at the 10:15 service Rev. BJ Collins will offer a dedication blessing for the sanctuary.

In The Story of the Easter Robin (Zonderkidz), Dandi Daley Mackall retells an old Pennsylvania Dutch tale of the robin’s compassion as he witnessed Jesus’ death.

On Good Friday, a plain brown robin flying over Jerusalem was curious about the “nest” atop Jesus’ head. When the bird realized it was a crown of thorns, he tried to dislodge it. As the robin pulled out a long thorn from Jesus’ forehead, a drop of blood landed on the bird’s breast, staining it red. Now the robin’s red breast is a symbol of Jesus’ loving sacrifice, and the robin’s early-spring song is a reminder of Jesus’ joyful resurrection

In his single act,Jesus, the one man,

saved all humankind.

Four Lessons of Good Friday

The Rev. James Martin, S.J., author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage (HarperOne), writes that Jesus’ suffering and death almost 2,000 years ago are very relevant to our 21st-century lives. He says Good Friday teaches us that:

1. physical and emotional suffering are part of life;

2. suffering isn’t always the result of sin; 3. Jesus was fully human — and thus

understands our humanity; and 4. suffering isn’t the last word.

“The message of Good Friday is incomplete without Easter,” Martin writes. “The story of the Passion is not simply of a man being brutally tortured, nailed to a cross and executed by the Romans. It’s the story of a man who turns himself fully over to the Father’s will, trusts that something new will come out of this offering and receives the astonishing gift of new life.”

SAND DOLLAR

The markings on this shell symbolize components of Christ's birth and death. Thefive-point outline on the front of the sand dollar represents the star of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1,2). The five holes in the sand dollar represent the pierced hands, feet, and side of Christ (Psalm 22:16; John 20:26,27). When the sand dollar is opened, it reveals five tiny objects that look similar to flying doves. Doves symbolize the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:21,22).

Letter from a child

Dear God, Is the minister a friend of yours, or do you

just know him through business? Love,Morgan

HEAVEN

Sunday school teacher: “How many of you children want to go to heaven?” Everyone raised a hand except one little boy.

Teacher to the boy: “Johnny, don’t you want to go to heaven?” Johnny: “I can’t. Mother told me to come home right after Sunday school.”
