St. John’s Church is…..
Rooted in the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation. We believe we are saved by grace through faith in
Jesus, that the Bible is the rule for Christian life and faith, and that the Good News of Jesus should be
proclaimed in word and deed. Sacrament Celebrating. We believe God ministers to the community of believers in unique and special ways
through Baptism and Holy Communion. Liturgically Oriented. We believe remembering the whole life of Christ is important for spiritual maturity. We
follow the church calendar, celebrating seasons like Advent and Lent. Ecumenically Minded. In the context of our heritage, we believe all those who call upon Jesus as Lord will
share in his eternal blessings and so we welcome all believers who join us to participate fully in worship.
Thanks for visiting with us today! Feel free to call one of the pastors, Rev. John, Rev. Steve. Or Ben, @ 734-

St. John’s Church Top Ten Hymn Countdown No. 6 “Because He lives
“Because He Lives” was written by Bill and Gloria Gaither. Bill Gaither records
these words as to the writing of this Hymn: “ We wrote this hymn after a period of
time when we had had a kind of dry spell and hadn’t written songs for a
while…Also at the end of the 1960’s, when our country was going through some
great turmoil with the height of the drug culture and the whole “God is dead” theory
which was running wild in our country and also at the peak of the Vietnam War, our
little son was born – Benjy. We thought at the time, “this is really a poor time to
bring a child into the world.” At times we were even quite discouraged by the whole
thing. But the words came to us, “How sweet to hold our new born baby and feel
the pride and joy he gives, but better still the calm assurance that this child can face
uncertain days because Christ Lives.” And it gave us the courage to say “Because
Christ Lives we can face tomorrow” and keep our heads high, and hopefully that
could be of meaning to other people.” Sing joyfully today as we experience the
power of Christ’s love and life. Taken from 101 More Hymn Stories.

CHUCKLE OF THE WEEK
There is a story about a monastery in Europe perched high on a cliff several hundred feet in the air.
The only way to reach the monastery was to be suspended in a basket which was pulled to the top by
several monks who pulled and tugged with all their strength. Obviously the ride up the steep cliff in
that basket was terrifying. One tourist got exceedingly nervous about half-way up as he noticed that
the rope by which he was suspended was old and frayed. With a trembling voice he asked the monk
who was riding with him in the basket how often they changed the rope. The monk thought for a
moment and answered brusquely, "Whenever it breaks!!"

YOUTH!! Youth! Youth! Youth! YOUTH!! UP-COMING EVENTS
November 16—. Bridge Street Bash- Nov. 16, 4:30-9:30. Last year our students had a blast eating,
shopping and just being teenagers together at Bridge Street Mall in Huntsville. We’ll join together again for
a great night out! Make sure your teenager is part of the fun and fellowship taking place this weekend (and
every week)! This is a change in schedule from what was planned at the beginning of the school year, so
make sure to adjust your calendar. Sign up with Ben.
December 27-29, Connect Conference (Student Celebration)- Sevierville, TN.
Not only do our students enjoy this great time away in the mountains with amazing bands such as Rend
Collective, 10th Avenue North, Hawk Nelson, and Brett Younker Band, but God also uses the worship and
speakers to bring about life change in our students. This years speakers include Brett Gambrell, and Jon
Acuff who are great Christian speakers (Google those names), along with Sandy and John Luke Robertson
from A&E’s hit show Duck Dynasty who will also be there to share their faith stories. Sign-up forms are
due Nov. 20. Cost is $125 and we are committed to making sure any student who wants to attend can.
See Ben to sign up and for more information.
Advent Services- This year, our regular Advent services in the sanctuary will be changing in time to 6PM.
In the past, we have held a brief student time before the service, but this new time will change how our
student ministry operates during Advent for this year. In order to continue with a strong student ministry
through the Christmas season, and to make sure our students experience the strong and meaningful
tradition of our church, our students will continue meeting in the youth center from 6-7 during Advent.
During this special time, we will celebrate the birth of Christ, and finish each week with communion. We
hope you will join with the congregation in the sanctuary during this time for prayer and spiritual renewal.

MINISTER OF MUSIC SEARCH COMMITTEE
Please remember to keep in your prayers the new search committee for Minister of Music. Members are:
Nikki West, Patti Stidham, Brandon Minor, Tricia Fuller, Mark Aderhold, Vicki Jackson, and Dewayne Hill,
Chairman.
HOW DOES ST. JOHN’S EXTEND A CALL FOR A NEW SENIOR PASTOR? For only the third time in over forty years we will be calling a new Sr. Pastor to lead St. John’s.
After a Senior Pastor announces his retirement/resignation, the Church Council serves as, or appoints, a Search
Committee. After establishing a vision for pastoral leadership (gifts, qualities, attributes, expectations, etc.) in
accord with Article VIII of the Constitution, the position is announced through a variety of places (web sites,
seminaries, etc.). Interested individual’s present resumes to be reviewed by the search committee.
When the Search Committee has selected the person they feel God has called to be the new Sr. Pastor, they (the
Search Committee) present the candidate to the Church Council for approval and formal nomination to the
Congregation.
Following the nomination, several opportunities will be made available for the congregation to get to know the
candidate and his family. This process concludes with a sermon delivered during Sunday morning worship.
This process is done in accordance with our Church Constitution: ARTICLE VIII, SECTION 7. The Council shall nominate one candidate for Pastor to be voted upon by the
Congregation. The Congregation shall consider only one candidate at a time and shall vote by ballot for his
election or rejection. A Pastor is considered to have been elected if he is acclaimed by a two-thirds majority of
those communicant members attending the Congregational meeting, provided a quorum is present. A quorum is
said to be ten percent of the communicant members.
A congregational meeting will be called to order before the first service on the day the prospective pastor
preaches and adjourned after the last service of that day. A congregational vote, by ballot, will take place at the
conclusion of each service on that day. Votes will be tallied and results announced following the last service.
