From the Pastor WISHING YOU A BLESSED NEW YEAR! Holiday Mass Schedule Tuesday, December 31, 2019
4 p.m. Vigil Mass Wednesday, January 1, 2020
Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
New Year’s Day
8:30 and 10 a.m. Masses New Year’s Day falls on a Wednesday.
Because of this, we will not have our normally
scheduled all-day Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament on January 1st. Neither will we
have our 5:30 p.m. daily Mass, Confessions
and Benediction. We will resume our normal
Wednesday liturgical schedule January 8th Fr. Blum and the Staff of St. John Vianney Catholic Church & School
Discontinuation of the Seasonal
5:30 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass and
the Seasonal 7 a.m. Daily Mass
After much prayerful discernment,
I have decided not to bring back the seasonal
5:30 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass and the seasonal
7 a.m. Daily Mass. I no longer see a pastoral need
to offer these Mass times. Please note: The 7 a.m.
Sunday Mass will still remain on the schedule. Based on weekend Mass attendance counts over
the past few years, we have a large enough wor-
ship space and a sufficient number of weekend
Masses (5) to accommodate our Mass crowds
without having to add an additional seasonal
weekend Mass. While the Saturday 4 p.m. Vigil
Mass and Sunday 10 a.m. Mass are our most
well-attended Masses, there is ample space avail-
able at our 7, 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. Sunday Masses. Our current weekday Mass schedule is sufficient
to meet the needs of our parishioners who desire
to attend Mass during the week. The addition,
a few months ago, of the Wednesday evening
weekday Mass will help compensate for the
discontinuation of the seasonal daily Masses and
give parishioners another option for attending
weekday Mass. Perhaps this goes without saying, but this is a
good opportunity to be reminded that our
obligation in fulfilling the 3rd Commandment is to
attend Mass on Sundays (or Saturday evening).
Attending a weekday Mass does not fulfill our
Sunday obligation. However, choosing to attend
weekday Mass in addition to one’s Sunday obli-
gation is highly encouraged and brings many
spiritual benefits. Having one year-round Mass schedule instead
of two seasonal Mass schedules will provide less
confusion and make it easier to communicate
our Mass times both internally and externally.
Please see the front cover of the bulletin for our
current schedule of Masses.

Gift of Faith
Christ Renews His Parish Our Catholic faith is a precious gift,
and as with any gift, it needs to be used wisely.
Whatever vocation you choose in life, your desire
is to be the best you can be in that profession.
That’s the way it should be with your Catholic
faith, you should desire to be the best Catholic
you can be. St. Francis once said; Preach the gospel at all times,
when necessary, use words. You are called to be a
light to the world’s darkness, so your actions and
encounters with others should be filled with the
light of Christ, with peace and joy...in your homes,
work places, grocery stores or walking down
the street. If you ask God to give you the grace you need each
day to be His beacon of light, He will answer your
prayer. Jesus said: Ask and you will receive...Seek and
you will find...Knock and the door will be opened to you.

Humanae Vitae 50 Years Later: History of
Dissent and Defense (CD) Janet Smith, Ph.D. a seminary professor and
internationally-known author and speaker,
provides important context for why
Humanae Vitae is considered the
most controversial, and one of
the most important, encyclicals
promulgated by the church in
modern times. She discusses how this document
written by Blessed Pope Paul VI served to
prophetically warn the world of the dire
consequences associated with artificial
contraception and faithfully witness to the
beauty of God’s plan for sex within marriage. Various CD’s, booklets and/or books are
available in the main entrance of the church.
We kindly ask for a $2 donation for each booklet,
$3 donation for each CD and $5 for each book to
