My dear sisters and brothers in Christ

In our first reading this weekend we learn of a mother and her seven sons, for this family, the refusal to consume pork has nothing to do with vegetarian sympathies or keeping inches off their waistline.

For them, it has every-thing to do with faith.

In the faith of Judah dietary laws were sacred laws. To observe them was to honour God, while to break them was

to deny the bonds of covenant.

So, for this one anony-mous family in the Book of Maccabees this de-mand to eat pork is no simple case of forced feeding.

Instead, this is a de-mand to deny their identity as the Chosen People, and to choose a different God and dif-ferent faith or face the prospect of death. Talk about Heroes!

Although we cannot measure faith the way we can measure baking flour, we can see signs of its presence among

us. In our commitments of our time, talents and treasure as we take God’s generosity to us and pass it along to oth-ers.

But of all of faith’s manifestations perhaps the crowning jewel is our steadfast endurance in the face of grave ad-versity.

To trust God. To obey God To be loyal to God. These are the hallmarks that go beyond the boundaries of belief and into the realm of faith.

Although we can be pretty quick to say God is first in our lives, the

reality might be quite different when we look at what actually captures our attention & money and what motivates our energies.

If we look at it this way, our religious iden-tity might easily take a back seat to the many other identities we take on in the course of our lives.

If we look at it this way, we might find our money concerns, our national identity, or our political identity or sporting sympathies en-gage us more often and more deeply than our

Christian identity.We might find our-

selves engaged in every-day struggles to conform the world to our needs as opposed to conform-ing ourselves to God’s needs.

If this be the case, a mother and her seven sons can teach us a lot about what it means to put God first, or to offer ourselves for the sake of another, or to hope in a world beyond the one we know.

NIEDZIELNA REFLEKSJA NAD SŁOWEM BOŻYM ...

Dzisiejsza data przy-pomina o wskrzeszeniu naszej niepodległości. To dobrze, bo Bóg nie jest Bogiem umarłych, lecz żywych. Śmierć nie jest absolutnym unicestwieniem, ale zniszczeniem tego, co w człowieku jest skażone grzechem. Saduceusze w odróżnieniu od fa-ryzeuszy odrzucali możliwość zmartwych-wstania. Jezus broni prawdy o zmartwych-wstaniu, podkreśla jednak, że nie jest to powrót do życia w ta-kich jakościach, w ja-kich się je zakończyło, lecz w nieskończenie u w z n i o ś l o n y m kształcie, a to za sprawą Jego zmartwychwstan-ia. Ludzie będą jak aniołowie w niebie, ale nie oznacza to noszenia skrzydeł, chodzi raczej o skupienie na kontem-placji Boga i udoskon-alenie natury ludzkiej, wysubtelnienie jej. Małżeństwo nie tyle będzie niedozwolone, co po prostu nikt go nie będzie potrzebował. Sposób istnienia na-bierze nowych cech, trudnych do zrozum-ienia na tym poziomie istnienia, który w tej chwili jest czymś w rodzaju kokonu i daleko mu jeszcze do doskonałości obrazu

Bożego! Bóg jest Bo-giem żywych, a nie umarłych, a to znaczy, że zmartwychwstan-iemy. Abraham, Izaak, Jakub i wszyscy z przeszłości szukający Boga całym sercem są żywi. Bóg nie jest Bo-giem cmentarzy albo albumów z fotografi-ami wszystkich tych, których stworzył. W chwili Przemienienia obok żywego Jezusa ujawnili się Mojżesz i Eliasz, nie jako hologramy, lecz jako żywi ludzie, choć, co prawda, inaczej żywi! Jezus Chrys-tus przyszedł na ten świat przekazać naukę o wiecznym życiu, przyszedł zaświadczyć o tym życiu, które jest dostępne przez Niego i dzięki Niemu. Jest to Najlepsza Nowina, dlatego nazywamy ją Ewangelią. Je-zus mówi o sobie, że jest drogą do życia wiecznego, prawdą o tym życiu i właśnie tym życiem wiecz-nym w Bogu Ojcu. „Jeszua nie przyszedł po to, aby przynieść nam to, co dziś nazy-wamy moralnością, ale przyszedł, by przynieść wiedzę życia dla ludzkości jeszc-ze niedokończonej” (Claude Tresmontant).

Naucza więc, abyśmy byli pouczeni nie ty-lko o życiu wiecznym po zmartwychwstaniu, ale też o tym, w jaki sposób wejść w to życie wieczne, które jest w Nim. Potrze-buje naszej wiary, zgody i współudziału, a nawet dość dużych wyrzeczeń. Myśląc o zmartwychwstaniu, zwykle odsyłamy to gdzieś w jakąś datę w odległej przyszłości. Marta i Maria, stojąc przed grobem Łazarza, wyznają wiarę w zmartwychwstanie, i w końcu Marta mówi, że wie, iż stanie się tak na końcu czasów. Jezus zaś mówi: Ja jestem zmartwych-wstaniem i za chwilę wywołuje cuchnące zwłoki Łazarza z grobu, które w jednej chwili nabierają życia. Podobnie umierający łotr, wisząc na krzyżu, zwraca się do Jezusa, prosząc o pamięć o nim. Jezus odpowiada mu: DZIŚ ZE MNĄ będziesz w raju! Nie mówi mu, że będzie to na końcu czasów, ale że dziś! Tam, gdzie jest Jezus, jest życie wiec-zne. Życie wieczne nie jest przypisane jakiejś konkretnej dacie albo uzależnione od jakiegoś wydarzenia kosmicz-nego, ale od tego, jak blisko jesteśmy samego Jezusa Chrystusa.

Friday 22nd November- an outing to Pitlochry Festival Theatre for the production of A Christ-mas Carol. A bus will leave St John’s at 3pm - stopping for High Tea at Bankfoot.

Tuesday 10th Decem-ber - dinner dance to be held in McDiarmid Park - £30. 6.30pm for 7pm.

Italian Classes for learners of all stages at 4.15pm in the Small Hall on Saturdays.

Watchnight Service

This year’s BBC Watchnight Service, to be broadcast on Christmas Eve, is called ‘Christmas Celebration’.

The recording will take place on Saturday 23rd November from 7pm - 10pm in St John’s Kirk, St John’s Place, Perth. As in previous years this is a free of charge - ticketed event.

Rooted in Sacred Scrip-ture, Tradition, and the perennial teaching of the Church, the offering of Holy Mass has been con-sidered the most efficacious manner of praying for and assisting the souls of our departed loved ones as they journey through the purifi-cation of Purgatory.

Each Mass is, as we know, the re-presentation of the saving sacrifice of Calvary, and, when we specifically ask for Mass to be offered for a deceased loved one, we ask that the merits of that saving sacrifice be applied to the soul of the one we mourn. It has been the pious practice

of Catholics to list their de-ceased during the month of November, that Masses be offered for them throughout this particular period—a sign of our ongoing love and con-cern for those who have gone ahead of us on this pilgrim-age of life. The offering of a stipend, a monetary gift to the priest for the celebration of these Masses is not only an additional sacrifice on the part of the donor for their be-loved dead but helps support the priest in his livelihood and supplements his modest income. We never “pay” for a Mass—indeed we cannot pay for the Sacraments—but our financial support of our

pastor is part of our generous contribution to the mission of the Church and the care of those who serve us in their priestly ministry. November lists are available at the back of the church for you to take and return as soon as pos-

sible. Please write on them the names of your beloved dead whom you wish to be remembered in the Masses during November and put them, along with any Mass offering you may be able to give.
