The Passion reading from the Gospel of Mark deepens our understanding of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. Why did the high priests and the Pharisees plot to get rid of Jesus? Mark makes it clear that these men were motivated by hatred, jealousy and insecurity. They were trying to pose as devout religious men but Jesus exposed them as hypocrites. What they do is not for God’s glory but their own selfishness. We need to see Him not as a powerful and domineering king, who will show forth power and strength, but He is a gentle and humble king, who is willing to suffer for others. During the Holy week, we recall the events of Christ passing from this world. It is a solemn passage through loneliness, betrayal, injustice and brutal suffering. It is a movement from life to death which then opens to new life. Through this week we are invited to accompany Christ on his final journey, bearing our own crosses, embracing our own loneliness, depression and struggle in faith with complete trust in the healing presence of God. Catechism of the Catholic Church 613 Christ’s death is both the Pascal sacrifice that accomplishes the definitive redemption of men, through ‘the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world’, and the sacrifice of the new Covenant, which restores man to communion with God by reconciling him to God through the ‘blood of the covenant, which was poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins’. Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't.

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Year B)

24th and 25th March, 2018

Palm Sunday begins our Holy week, the celebration of the Paschal mystery of Christ, the climax of the history of salvation and the greatest of the Christian feasts. Pope John Paul II wrote: “What God accomplished in Creation and wrought for His people in the Exodus has found its fullest expression in Christ’s life, Death and Resurrection, though its definitive fulfilment will not come until the Parousia, when Christ returns in glory” (Dies Domini, n18). At the same time the people were disappointed and later became angry because Jesus did not do what they expected i.e. to free them (by using force) from the domination of the Roman empire.

With Palm Sunday, we celebrate the beginning of our liberation from sin and death by uniting our lives to Christ crucified. We need to see Him not as a powerful and domineering king, who will show forth power and strength, but He is a gentle and humble king, who is willing to suffer for others. Marks tells us plainly that though Jesus showed himself as Son of God by the wonder of his works, it was through obedience to the Father, dying the death of a criminal that he proved himself as the Son (15:39). ALTAR SOCIETY ROSTER

SIXTH SUNDAY OF LENT When Psyche Mae featured in Project Compassion 2008, she was living in a squatter settlement, on the edge of a giant rubbish dump outside Manila in the Philippines. Her family was forced to pick through the rubbish to sell what they could to

survive. Thanks to the support of individuals and Caritas Australia, in 2018, Psyche Mae is now a young social worker, achieving her dream of helping others struggling to leave poverty behind them, with plans to study a Master’s degree. Please donate to Project Compassion 2018 and help improve the health and wellbeing of communities in the Philippines so they can work towards eradicating poverty, providing a just future for all. A just future starts with your support! You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

RAISE YOUR VOICES!

Entrance Antiphon: Six days before the Passover, when the Lord came into the city of Jerusalem, the children ran to

meet him; in their hands they carried palm branches and with a loud voice cried out:

Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, who have come in your abundant mercy!

O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors. Let him enter, the king of glory! Who is this king of glory? He,

the Lord of hosts, he is the king of glory.

Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, who have come in your abundant mercy!

Communion Antiphon: Father, if this chalice cannot pass without my drinking it, your will be done.

Next Sunday:

Sunday of the Resurrection (Year B)

First Reading: Acts 10:34, 37-43

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-4

Gospel: John 20:1-9

Reflection QuestionsN.. ♦ I deny Jesus whenN.. I betray Jesus whenN.. I run

away from Jesus whenN.. ♦ I help Jesus carry the cross whenN.. ♦ I stand by Jesus whenN..

First reading Isaiah 50:4-7 31:31-34 A reading from the prophet Isaiah

The Lord has given me a disciple’s tongue. So that I may know how to reply to the wearied he provides me with speech. Each morning he wakes me to hear, to listen like a disciple. The Lord has opened my ear.

For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard; I did not cover my face against insult and spittle.

The Lord comes to my help, so that I am untouched by the insults. So, too, I set my face like flint; I know I shall not be shamed.

The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm 21:8-9, 17-20, 23-24 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

All who see me deride me. They curl their lips, they toss their heads. ‘He trusted in the Lord, let him save him; let him release him if this is his friend.’

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

Many dogs have surrounded me, a band of the wicked beset me. They tear holes in my hands and my feet I can count every one of my bones.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

They divide my clothing among them. They cast lots for my robe. O Lord, do not leave me alone, my strength, make haste to help me!

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

I will tell of your name to my brethren and praise you where they are assembled. ‘You who fear the Lord give him praise; all sons of Jacob, give him glory.

Revere him, Israel’s sons.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Second reading Philippians 2:6-11 A reading from a letter of St Paul to the Philippians

His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as men are; and being as all men are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high and gave him the name which is above all other names so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Word of the Lord Gospel Acclamation Philippians 2:8-9

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Christ became obedient for us even to death, dying on the cross. Therefore God raised him on high and gave him a name above all other names. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Gospel Mark 14:1-15:47 A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark
