St John’s School Weekly Newsletter Issue 138
I felt so proud last night during the
excellent St John's Arts Evening. The
combination of outstanding music,
memorable poetry recitals and the
hugely engaging pantomime 'Robinson
Crusoe' provided the audience with first
class entertainment. In addition the
detailed Art and Design and Technology
displays showed off both the boys'
aptitude and interest. I would like to say
a huge thank to the St John’s team, both
staff and boys, for committing
themselves to such worthwhile projects.
I hope you enjoy the pictures from the
evening.
I had a visit from the Robins this week.
I enjoyed discussing their "letters to
Santa" before they posted them in the
fireplace. Matthew and Shivank
delivered impressive assemblies on the
Invictus Games and we congratulated
the Year 5 and 6 scientists who won the
Merchant Taylors' Quiz Club heats.
They will now progress to the semi-
finals of the competition to be held at
UCS next week. It has been a busy week
of fixtures with all of the teams having
some even matches. I was particularly
impressed with the U12 and U13 hockey
teams who won the Merchant Taylors'
floodlit hockey league.
I would like to thank the St John's
Association for supplying and fitting the
fabulous Christmas decorations in
readiness for the Pre-Prep shows and
the Christmas Bazaar. I look forward to
welcoming you to these events.
From the Headmaster
Celebration of the Arts
"Behind you!" "Oh no it's not!" "Oh yes it is!" Where would be without our St
John's Christmas pantomime? A traditional part if the festive season, this play is the
second half of our annual Arts Evening, marking one of the first artistic events that
the school stages at this time of the year. The panto this year was based on the story
of Robinson Crusoe and all the hard work and rehearsing paid off with a super
production.
This finished a wonderful event showcasing many of our ensembles of instrumental
music and poetry from our Hunter Jones Poetry Competition winners in the first
half and a display of Fine Art and D&T during the interval. Well done to all he boys
for putting on a memorable evening that showed off their musical skills from our
beginners to our very advanced players. Strings, woodwind, percussion, brass,
recorders and Indian drums; the music ranged from 16th Century to the modern
day, and included standards such as 'Greensleeves' from the String Trio, 'Somewhere
Over the Rainbow' from the Chamberlain Ensemble and 'Watkin's Ale' from the
Bass Boys, our cello and double bass group. Festive favourites from the Guitar
Group and our Brass Band kept the forthcoming season in mind, and all our many
groups performed very well.

Quiz Club success Thursday 30th November
Eight of our budding Year 5 and 6 scientists were selected to take part in this inter-school competition held at Merchant
Taylors’ Prep yesterday. They battled against ten other teams in a very tough competition over two rounds. St John’s team 2 kept
in touch with the leading schools throughout round one, ending with a narrow 60 point advantage which they pressed home in
round 2 resulting in a final score of 2000 and 1st place. Team 1 also performed extremely well taking 4th place overall. Many
congratulations to all the boys and good luck to the four boys progressing through to the next stage.

Felix takes to the stage at Disneyland, Paris
Last weekend Felix (4M) travelled to Paris with his theatre company called Razzmataz to perform at Disneyland. The show
was ‘Alice in Razzland’ and Felix played the part of Tweedle Dee in front of 850 people in the Dome theatre. The following day
he took part in a parade outside in icy temperatures before returning home in time for school on Monday morning. Very well
done Felix and what an experience!
Mysterious fox spotted at St John’s The Colts A and B teams have been
witnessing some peculiar sightings of sly,
greedy foxes coming to training. They
apparently have a passion for our stinky rugby
boots and school shoes. Recently, Arjun’s
rugby boot was “the victim” of a fox attack.
We have even sent boys during rugby training
on fox patrol, trying to stop the foxes from
seeking their prey, namely our shoes. Luckily,
the fox didn't eat the boot... We do not know
what might have got into him, or why he flung
it like a discus into the misty trees! When we
found it, it was covered in fox saliva and was
slightly the worse for wear. Warning: please do
not leave your rugby boots or shoes lying
around or they might be the next “victim” of a
fox attack. They may not seem dangerous at
first, but get too close and your boots are gone!

Sporty assemblies
Our assembly theme this week has been sport. On Monday Mr Robinson explained about the history of the bicycle and how
it has evolved since its inception in 1817. Then Mr Newman brought in his state of the art carbon fibre bike which travels up to
500 miles a week mainly in the Chilterns. One of the most impressive features is it’s weight-only 7 kilos. Matthew and Shivank
(7L), assisted by Mr Pawson, gave a presentation about the Invictus Games later in the week. We learnt about it’s founder, Prince
Harry, about the different disciplines which are tested and the venues where it has been held. Next year it will be in Sydney if you
fancy a trip! The assembly ended with volunteers simulating the challenges faced by those participating in wheelchair basket ball
and rugby. Some of them were actually quite good!

Celebrations in Reception
Last week Reception’s topic was Birthdays Round the World. We talked about our own birthday traditions and we had a
lovely homemade chocolate birthday cake made by one of our mums. We also had great fun with piñatas and eventually we were
rewarded with a shower of sweets which we ate during Golden Time. What a fabulous Friday!

Posting letters to Santa!
This week, the Badgers, Eagles, Otters, Owls, Robins and Squirrels have all made sure that Santa is organised this
Christmas! We have used our writing skills to list all the possible goodies that we would like Santa to deliver to us if we behave
ourselves well enough! We thought he would like to know all the information in good time, so the Otters, Owls, Badgers and
Eagles set out for the nearest post box, holding our letters addressed to Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland. Reception decided to try
posting theirs up the chimney in Mr Robinson’s office! Let’s hope the elves can help Santa with our wishes when he receives the
mail…we will try to remember to leave out some treats for him and his reindeer on Christmas Eve to say ‘Thank You’!

Buddy time in the Juniors
This is a time when a Year 4 boy is paired with a Year 3 boy for different activities. Today they shared their personal
reader, telling one another the story and then reading a few pages to each other with the Year 4 boys giving help to their younger
buddy when necessary. They also had time to discuss their favourite authors. David Walliams and Frank Lampard seem to be firm
favourites at the moment! A great way to start the day with our Junior boys sharing both time and knowledge happily together.
Colts Rugby vs UCS Friday 24th November
16 December 1 2017
Colts A vs UCS
Scorers: Nathan 4
Outstanding performances: Charlie and Nathan
Mr Russo was really impressed with the performance and effort of all
the boys. Unfortunately we were missing three regular A team players
which provided an opportunity for other boys to come into the team.
We had a really close match against UCS. They had some strong and
powerful runners but we kept tackling and really tried very hard. Krish
D made an excellent intercept and ran the length of the pitch but
unfortunately ran over the dead ball line. Nathan scored a number of
fantastic individual tries. I was very pleased with the number of times
we moved the ball around the pitch and created space for Nathan.
Charlie also had a strong game, making lots of tackles and carrying the
ball into contact very strongly. Zac and Max also defended really well
and made some good tackles. Particularly impressive was Krish M who
played in different positions and always did a good job. Well done to all
the boys, it was a very hard fought match.
Colts B v UCS B
Scorers: Bradley 4, Jadon 2, Aaron 1, Darius 1, Qayl 1
Outstanding performance: Qayl
The whole team played exceptionally well and as a team we needed a
good performance. Qayl got ‘man of the match’ for quickly taking to
the fly-half position. With his safe and quick hands he ensured that as a
team we got the ball away from contact quickly and more to our
backline players which opened a lot of space and created opportunities.
Furthermore for also being experimental with some clever kicks behind
the UCS defence. This was always going to be a physical match. We
started brilliantly and scored two early tries but the momentum shifted
to UCS for the latter part of the first half and with some pacy runners
they managed to pull back 3 tries before half time. It was an important
half-time chat as we were simply missing too many tackles or tackling
too high and our running was not fearless enough. The team
responded brilliantly in the second half and did not concede any further
tries. Good distribution from Aaron and Qayl plus strong forward runs
from the backline made it difficult for UCS to contain our attacks.
Aaron and Darius gave good support to teammates to finish with their
tries. Qayl and Jadon especially with hard running using the width
resulted in some beautiful tries. Bradley was a good captain on the day
and lead by example with strong and clever evasive runs resulting in
him scoring 4 tries.
Well done.
Colts Rugby vs UCS Friday 24th November
17 December 1 2017
Colts C vs UCS
Scorers: Zachary 1, Vishal 1
Outstanding performance: Kamsi
We found it hard in the first half when the UCS players
ran with purpose and speed. UCS had a number of
very quick and strong players who were able to beat a
number of St John’s defenders. They also moved the
ball and we needed to close down the opposition space
much more quickly. In the second half, we saw a very
different St John’s team who came out and played so
much better. We tackled very well and moved the ball
through the hands much more which created the
attacking spaces out wide. We scored a glorious try in
the right hand corner when the whole team passed and
kept the ball alive. Eventually Vishal sprinted 20 yards
to score the try. A much better second half. Well done!
Colts D vs UCS
Scorers: Zac 4
Outstanding performance: The whole team
The boys played with good passion and determination.
There were some outstanding performances by Kian
and Zac. Once they saw Zac running through UCS so
easily they all wanted a bit of the action, creating tries
from our own try line which gave us more confidence.
At times we were struggling to tackle UCS as they had
strong, powerful players but overall we all played well.
Well done boys.
Under 10 Rugby vs Claire’s Court 24th Nov
18 December 1 2017
U10A v Claire’s Court
Outstanding performance: Whole team - good spirit
Toughest game yet for this year’s A team but it was refereed
very well which gave boys the encouragement to keep going
and stay with it. They produced better defence, tackling and
commitment than previously. This did not prevent steady
scoring from the opposition but did mean that they created
good chances in the second half and made Claire’s Court work
hard for their tries. Stand out performances from Harman,
Ethan and Freddie, both in defence and attack. Yusuf again
very physical at the breakdown and Asikoo had excellent line
breaks and a very fast defensive line speed which helped all the
team get forward more effectively.
U10B v Claire's Court
Scorers: Jesse 1, David 1, Reece 1
Outstanding performance: David for his ‘never-say-
die’ attitude.
The team did their best to carry where they left off last week,
but it proved to be much more difficult against a very strong
Claire's Court outfit. A couple of handling errors led to two
early tries for the home team, but St John's never stopped
trying to attack at every opportunity. Their persistence paid off
with Jesse, David and Reece all scoring fine tries. However,
Claire's Court were able to keep moving the ball to their speedy
attackers in the wide positions who were able to outpace our
covering defence even though David, on two occasions, chased
them the whole length of the pitch and very nearly caught
them. A fantastic effort from all concerned and valuable lessons
learnt regarding how to use space and not to waste scoring
opportunities.
U10C v Claire’s Court
Scorers: Darius
Outstanding performance: Edward
This proved to be a tough challenge. On a wet heavy pitch the
opposition relied in the first half on driving their big heavy boys
down the middle. To our credit our tackling and mauling
proved solid and they only scored two tries whilst Darius used
his pace to run the length of the pitch to gain us a deserved try
which kept us well in the game. We actually enjoyed more
possession and territory in another closely fought second half.
However, we could never quite get over the line and Claire’s
Court three times benefited from handling errors to score
breakaway tries from deep in their own half. Iago, Aydin,
Varun, Vishwadrik, Darius, James and Neal all excelled in
defence but Edward deservedly gained the man of the match
both for his tenacious tackling and for several determined runs
in which he broke through tackles and came close to scoring.
We still need to work on our handling.
U10D vs Claire’s Court
Scorers: Nikhil 3, Aaryan 2, Alexander 1, Panagiotis 1
Outstanding performance: Nikhil for his strong
running
The boys put in a good showing against a well-organised
Claire’s Court team. Nikhil ran well throughout the match and
Panagiotis also made a lot of ground with some impressive
side-stepping. Zreh made some strong and direct attacks which
sucked opposition players in, creating space on the flanks for
the other boys to run into. There was an excellent passage of
team play in the second half, which was finished off by Aaryan.
The boys were a credit to themselves and St John’s.
Gayhurst Under 8 Rugby Tournament 25 Nov
19 December 1 2017
We played well against Caldicott and the team passed the ball through the hands which created attacking opportunities for the
side. We scored some great tries through Sayten and Nishant but it was a real team effort that enabled the side to compete well.
Our second match was against MTP who had one very talented player but great defence and closing down the space really helped
the side. We passed the ball very well and exploited the gaps in the defence which allowed us to score some great tries.
Chesham were a strong side and in the first half we found it hard to go forward with the opposition closing us down quickly. In
the second half, we moved the ball much more quickly to other supporting players and this really helped our attack. Kush scored
a great try in the right corner.
The final match against UCS we needed to close down the space of the attacking players as a line together. But our passing and
support play really gelled and the pick of the tries were from Nishant and Emeka with great team work. A great effort by all the
players who played in the U8’s tournament at Gayhurst.
Match 1 vs Caldicott
Scorers: Alistair 1, Emeka 1, Satyen 1, Nishant 2, Archie 1,
Rafi 1, Kush 1
Match 2 vs MTP
Scorers: Emerson 1, Rafi 2, Satyen 2, Kush 1
Match 3 Vs Chesham Prep
Scorers: Kush 3, Satyen 1, Emerson 1
Match 4 Vs UCS
Scorers: Rafi 1, Nishant 3, Satyen 1, Emerson 1, Emeka 1
Under 13 A Rugby vs St. Martin’s 27th Nov
20 December 1 2017
U13 A v St. Martins
St John’s won 45-20
Scorers: Daniel 7, Adam, Ben H
Outstanding performance: Daniel
This was a match of 20 minutes each way squeezed into late afternoon. St John’s started strongly moving the ball wide
early to both sides and outflanking the opposition. St. Martin’s gradually began to fill the pitch requiring the St John’s
boys to punch more through the middle and here Dare, Dominic M and Adam produced good ball carries while
Daniel was free to exploit the spaces they created to very good effect. St Martin’s though had some spirit and a few
boys with pace, size and power and they started to put pressure on St John’s so that they scored through the midfield.
Early in the second half they scored twice more, one again through the middle and one wide out. St John’s collected
their efforts and again scored through Daniel twice before St. Martin’s got one last try to leave the score at 9 tries to 4.
Overall a strong team performance where every player contributed throughout.
Under 9 Rugby vs Caldicott & Gayhurst 28th Nov
21 December 1 2017
U9 Ireland vs Gayhurst and Caldicott
Scorers: Match 1, Yash 4, Lucas 1,
Benyamin 7, Kian 1
Scorers: Match 2, Yash 2, Rohan 4,
Benyamin 4, Vivaan 1
Outstanding Performances: Benyamin
The boys needed no time to start scoring tries.
Quick bursts of pace from Benyamin and Yash
gave St John's an early lead which they managed to
hold on to through some good tackling from
Vivaan. Kian led the boys through great
communication. He organised the team well and
screamed for the ball to be spread out wide to
open space.
The second game against Caldicott was very
similar. However the opposition showed more
aggressive attack and the boys were struggling to
slow down their runs and make the tackles. But
quick passing and fast running became their saving
grace again as Benyamin and Rohan found the try
line time after time.
U9 South Africa Vs Caldicott and
Gayhurst
Scorers: Vihaan 6, Ansh 3, Aryan 4,
Rakshan 3
Outstanding Performances: The whole
team
It was always going to be a tough game against
Caldicott and Gayhurst but the boys rose to the
challenge. When we had the ball, we were hard to
stop with Ishaan, Vihaan and Aryan running hard
straight at them making them think twice about
tackling them. We were very weak in defence
practically watching them score tries in the first
half of both games, but after a stern word at half
time we started to make our tackles putting the
opposition under a lot of pressure. Overall on a
freezing day the boys played well and stayed
motivated and I couldn't ask anymore from them.
Under 9 Rugby vs Caldicott & Gayhurst 28th Nov
22 December 1 2017
U9 England v Caldicott and Gayhurst
Scorers: Match 1 Ansh, Thomas, Daniel S
4
Scorers: Match 2 Zac, Ansh, Thomas 2,
Albert, Daniel S. 5
Outstanding Performances: Daniel S
St John’s first match was against Gayhurst who
were a strong team with good ball carriers. The St
John’s boys started a little slowly but gradually
improved upon their line speed, tackling though
in attack tended to bunch a little too tight.
By the second half they were finding their way
and Daniel started to get more ball resulting in
four tries to him plus one each for Ansh and
Thomas who both finished their scores very well.
They continued this form against Caldicott and
backed with strong defensive work by Zac and
Albert, Aaron emerged as a very good link man
close to the tackle and the team managed to pro-
duce 10 tries. Most pleasing was their improve-
ment as a team with Ansh contributing strongly
with his all round game and Hamza working in all
important passes.
U9 New Zealand v Gayhurst and Caldicott
Scorers: Oliver 3, Felix 2, Amos 2, Blake 2,
Sahib 1
Outstanding Performances: The whole team
The U9 New Zealand team followed on from
their stronger and improved performance from
the week before. This was the second fixture
against Gayhurst this term so the perfect oppor-
tunity to measure our improvement. This was a
great match with both teams showing good run-
ning rugby, scoring lots of tries and showing
some good strong tackles too. As a team we are
certainly growing in confidence match by match
with improved tackling and attacking runs. The
level of enjoyment and willingness to learn is
high, what more can I ask for! Well done boys.
Merchant Taylors’ Tuesday Hockey League
23 December 1 2017
U13A vs Merchant Taylors’ Prep in the THL hockey
final 28th November Won 10-2
Scorers: Alex 4, Daniel 5, Kabir
Outstanding performances: Alex, Daniel and Dominic
The THL hockey league started back in September with a number
of training sessions before the teams moved into regular fixtures.
After playing seven matches and winning all of them with 59
goals in total and only conceding 7, St John’s finished first out of
Merchant Taylors’ Prep, Merchant Taylors’ School and St
Martin’s. The final was against Merchant Taylors’ Prep who were
a well organised side and battled for everything on the pitch. St
John’s scored a very quick goal at the start of the game and never
looked back. In the first half, we kept and passed the ball
superbly around the pitch where Alex, Dominic and Daniel
controlled the game with their excellent hockey skills. We started
scoring goals and on the flanks we were just too good for the
opposition. In the second half, we tended to keep the ball too
much but our individual skills demonstrated our dominance by
winning 10 - 2. However, this was a real team effort and at the
back, Marcos, Ben K, Ben H and Adam defended very well with
Aaron again making some great saves in goal. Up front Prashant
and Kabir played very well in the striker position. Many
congratulations to the whole team for bringing home the trophy.
U12 A vs Merchant Taylors’ Prep in the THL hockey
final 28th November Drew 4-4
Scorers: Alex, Rohan 2, Josh
Outstanding performance: Mason, Rohan
The under 12 squad were also involved in the final against our
local rivals and in an exciting match the spoils were shared. It had
been a long way to the final and the boys did extremely well as
this was the third time we had played Merchant Taylors’ Prep.
We had suffered two losses, 1-6 and 2-3 previously, so we were
looking to go one better and finally get a win. At full time though,
nothing could separate the teams and it ended 3-3. Two periods
of extra time saw both teams score a goal and again we were
deadlocked. In the name of good sportsmanship it was decided
that both teams deserved their share of the trophy and the players
shook hands.
Well done to all the 17 boys who have played at the THL this
season, you have all contributed to this success in some way.
Senior Hockey vs Haileybury 29th November
24 December 1 2017
U13A Hockey vs Haileybury
Won 5 - 2
Scorers: Daniel 1 Dominic 3 Kabir 1
Outstanding performances: Dominic
Our first hockey match against Haileybury and this year it was a
much tougher match. The opposition were very organised and
moved the ball confidently round the pitch. However, we
scored an early goal which certainly helped the side to settle
into the game. On occasions, we tended to hold onto the ball a
little too long which made it harder for us to develop our
attacking game. In the second half, we played with much more
pace and moved the ball quickly around the pitch. This enabled
us to find gaps and score the necessary goals to win the match.
A good win against strong opposition. Well done!
Under 12 A vs Haileybury
Won 5-0
Scorers: Rohan 2, Ashok 1, Alex 1, Josh 1
Outstanding performances: Rohan, Matt.
On a freezing cold day the U12 A team had an excellent win
away at Haileybury. Passing the ball well we created many
chances with Rohan being especially dangerous around the D.
Solid at the back, Matt managed to keep a clean sheet and at
half time we were comfortably 4-0 up. The second half saw
Haileybury come back into the game and we were restricted to
only one goal. Overall a very good performance with some fine
hockey all-round.
U12B Hockey vs Haileybury
Scorers: Netanel 3, Joe 3, Prashant 3 Outstanding performances: Whole team
It was a freezing cold day at Haileybury but the boys only had
one thing on their minds and that was to WIN! Right from the
start we put them under pressure scoring several goals early on,
our defence was exceptional not letting them score in the whole
game. We continued in this manner in the second half making
our win even more convincing. Well done boys a good 9-0 win.
U12C Hockey vs Haileybury
Won 15 - 0
Scorers: Cyrus 2, Aryan 3, Shane 3, Shivank 6, Shivam
1
Outstanding performances: The whole team
The boys’ first match of the school year could not have been
played better. The boys showed brilliant spatial awareness
passing the ball slickly out wide using Zain as a pivot point to
get the ball to dangerous positions. The first goal came quickly
after the first touch and the floodgates didn't close until the
final whistle. All boys showed great ball control as well as
confidence and composure which will put them in great stead
for the rest of the fixtures to come.

two goals. Bottom left: Jake in action in a convincing win. Daniel’s karate success
At the TISKA annual awards dinner, Daniel (8R) received his
certificate and Black belt from Chief Instructor Sensei Sahota in
recognition of his grading to 1st Dan last month. Many
congratulations to him on this considerable achievement.
Under 8 Rugby vs UCS 30th November
26 December 1 2017
U8 England Vs UCS
Scorers: Jimi 1, Mithil 1, Oliver 3
Outstanding performances: Whole team
The boys played well as a team against a well drilled UCS team.
We struggled to make our passes which let UCS score easy tries
but we didn't let that get us down. We scored some great tries
from our own half sidestepping UCS and passing into space
which made it allot easier for us to score. Once we scored we
started to play better as a team and pass the ball into space
instead of just running straight into their defensive line. Well
played in tough conditions.
U8 New Zealand vs UCS
Scorers: Satyen 1, Shane 2, Nishant 2, Emerson 1, Kush
1, Rafi 2
Outstanding performances: Whole team
The boys played very well and in the first half they moved the
ball through the hands with skill and flair. On occasions, some of
the runners tried to run round the opposition team. But they
soon realised that if you run straight and use evasive footwork
they will beat the defender much more easily. We scored some
very good team tries and the support was fantastic to see. In the
second half, we tried to be too individual in attack and needed to
move up as a line to close down the opposition players more in
defence. However, the team has moved forwards massively in all
areas and they should be very proud of what they have achieved
this term.
U8 South Africa V UCS
Scorers: Kian P, Remika, George L ,Krish, Oliver
Outstanding performances: Kian P, Krish
The boys managed to to improve on their alignment in attack
and defence and stayed better on side after the tackle. What was
very pleasing was the number of passes that went to other boys
on the move rather than always taking it standing still. This was
especially well done by Kian P and Krish near the try lines which
led to good scores. Remika, Rehaan and Oliver ran strongly
again, and George, James and Kian D kept busy in defence.
Under 8 Rugby vs UCS 30th November
27 December 1 2017
U8 Australia Vs UCS
Scorers: Yash 2, Abdullah 3, Kian A 1, Luca 6, Roshan 1 Outstanding performance: Luca On a bitterly cold Thursday afternoon St John’s Australia played
against UCS. The team started really well, running forwards and
scoring two early tries. The running ability and evasive skills of
this side is really strong and good. What I really appreciated on
the afternoon was them passing the ball more. Our target here is
to try and pass on the move and not standing still. Luca showed
some clever footwork and sidestepping to dance his way through
to his tries. Really good rushing up in defence from the whole
team. Another entertaining match with lots of tries. Well done!
U8 Ireland Vs UCS
Outstanding performance: The whole team
The boys showed great determination against a strong UCS
team. St John's displayed some good shape and utilised the
whole pitch, however a lot of dropped balls allowed UCS to
have a lot more possession. Ted showed great spatial awareness
screaming for the ball to be passed down the line while George
showed great bursts of pace down the lines. It was a really good
effort from all the boys who didn’t let their head drop and had
great grit throughout the game.

between 5.00-5.15pm on Wednesday 6th December is from
Erskine Hall and not from St John’s. Please try to car share if
possible as the area around the care home can get very
congested.
The famous St John’s Christmas Quiz is on sale now from
Mr Taylor, priced £1.50. It will also be on sale at the Christmas
Bazaar. It is fiendishly difficult and totally unique but you are
allowed to use any resources you like including the internet,
books, friends and family. The competition closes at the end of
January and there are prizes for the best scores. It is for a
charitable cause so don’t be shy about having a go!
