Front – Our base front is a 40 front. If no front is called we will automatically align in a 40 front. If I want a 50, 30, Heads, Under or Stack I will signal it.

Slant/Twist – 2nd we will signal in any line slant or stunt if wanted.

Blitz – 3rd we will signal in any Blitz if wanted.

Coverage – Finally we will signal in our coverage.

How We Call a Defense

We are a no huddle defense. Everyone will look to the sideline to get the hand signals. The Liz linebacker will call out the defensive strength (Right/Left). The signals will come in as followed…

Page 10: St. John Fisher College

10

Strength Call

We will not signal in the strength call. We will automatically align to…

Field Call – If the ball is on the hash mark we will always make field calls. A field call is always to the wide side of the field.

Strong Call – If the ball is in the middle of the field we will make strong calls. A strong call will always be to the strength of the formation.

Identifying personnel is an important aspect in preparing to defend an opposing offense. Teams will have definite tendencies based on the personnel they have in the huddle.

We identify the personnel by using a number system. 1st Number = RB2nd Number = Tight Ends

Sting (Cover 0 Blitz)

Sting – (Liz) (Mike) (Rover) (Will Safety)

Cover 0 Engage – This is a man coverage with no deep safety help. Since we are not accounting for the RB in the coverage we will use an engage technique. If the RB goes through your gap or swings to the outside the LB or Defensive Linemen blitzing that gap or off the edge will come off of the blitz and engage the RB man to man.
